Whiskey-04, later known as The Legion, was the codename given to one of the most advanced non-SPARTAN units of the 26th century, starting out as a small team of Orbital Drop Shock Troopers upon it's formation and eventually expanding to a platoon by the 2560's. After accompanying Roger Maxon to Minerva, where his rebellion began, the unit was purged of those deemed too loyal to the UNSC and built up again, forming the basis for a well-trained army that would battle with the UNSC for many years before finally being defeated in 2599. Not long after, Whiskey-04 was reconstituted as an ODST unit once more.

Formation

When war broke out with the Covenant, the SPARTAN-II supersoldiers were deployed against them. Among them was Sigma, a team of nine Spartans that had been secretly recruited by the Office of Naval Intelligence. Due to the importance of SPARTAN missions, during which supplies and critical objects, people or data would have to be moved, there was a need for a second team to act as transporters, reinforcements and scapegoats for the operations carried out by the SPARTAN-II's, who were at that time still a heavily classified project within the Navy.

A go-between for Sigma and ONI, Whiskey was an 8-man team made up of talented ODST's, who would be able to quickly move in and extract critical data or VIP's from the frontines and allow the Spartans to return to combat. The initial team was commanded by Major John Ackton, a veteran of many battles and a former member of the ORION Project. Placed in the team were a group of talented ODST's, including Richard Mack Jr., whose father had trained Sigma alongside Roe. Mack Sr. had actually had his son placed in the team to keep him away from the frontlines.

Whiskey participated in many battles throughout the Human-Covenant War, more often than not fighting alongside the Spartans in open battle. However, Whiskey proved to be a far more formidable fighting unit than first thought, rarely losing a member. They had even saved the lives of the Spartans they were supporting from time to time.

The Human-Covenant War

Whiskey served throughout the Human-Covenant War, fighting in many battles and assisting Sigma on various missions. Whiskey had lost several members, all of whom were replaced with other ODST's. By 2546, only three members of the original team remained: Major John Ackton, First Lieutenant Steven Embry, and Sergeant Major Richand Mack. However, when Whiskey was deployed into combat on a colony world under attack by Covenant forces later that year, Major Ackton was killed in combat with a Brute Chieftain. The rest of Whiskey made it out alive, but disheartened. On that planet, they had lost their great leader.

After Ackton's Death, the newly promoted Captain Embry took over whiskey and led it on many missions over the next few years. Whiskey had come to rely on the Spartans of Sigma Team for backup, and saw them, like many did, as invincible. However, following a large battle in 2550, causing the deaths of two Spartans, Whiskey saw that their Spartan 'protectors' were, like them, all too human.

Whiskey were present at the Fall of Reach in July-August 2552. They fought in several engagements against the Covenant, the last of which being in New Alexandria. However, Captain Embry was killed by a banshee strike during the battle, leaving Sergeant Major Mack as acting commander. He ordered the team out of the City, and using a UH-144 Falcon to escape to Aszod. By the time they arrived, however, the Pillar of Autumn had already left the planet. So, they made their way to the abandoned frigate nearby, the 'Bright New Day'. When they got there, they came under heavy fire, and were pinned down, unable to get aboard. Eventually, a team of Spartans, consisting of Kane-099, Marco-025 Louie-A199 and Martin-A136 arrived, and held off the covenant forces while the team boarded and powered up the ship. The Spartans managed to get aboard and the frigate as it took off. They were later joined by Jax-007 and Alex-A121, who had hijacked banshees, managing to get into the Hangar bay before the ship entered orbit.

The Bright New Day narrowly escaped from Reach, evading Covenant Ships. As per the Cole Protocol, they made several random jumps to ensure that they were not being followed. After several random jumps, the frigate ended up near the human colony world Hope, which was under siege. On the decision of MCPO Kane-099, the team went to assist the defenders. In their initial skirmish, they were able to destroy a Covenant vessel, but sustained heavy damage to their FTL drive, forcing them to land and search for the means to repair it. After fighting on Hope for some time, and later participating in a short battle on the Zenith Complex, Whiskey accompanied the Spartans on their return journey to Earth.
