Eli Brown had only been home for a few weeks. He could hardly believe that the war was over, and he believed even less that humanity had won. When the clouds gathered in the sky on this chilly Sunday morning he felt more secure than he had under yesterday's sun. He had spent so much time away from Earth, fighting on arctic planets or trying to survive in the frigid tropics of a world whose sun was obscured by smoke and soot.
Rising from the chair at the kitchen table, Eli sipped his coffee and looked at his nephew. The four year old was wholly unaware of the horrors his uncle experienced or the alien empire whose interstellar genocide was only barely halted. Instead he watched an educational holo-video about the lives of ocean creatures. Eli instinctively searched his surroundings for any threats before walking over to the counter to refill his mug.
As he poured, Eli peered out of the large kitchen window into the front yard.
