The Varren-class corvette, also known as the Jaeteran Corvette, is a model of light warship utilized in the Jaeteran Navy. The larger, more capable cousin of the Constable-class fast attack craft, the Varren was developed out of the need for a fast, well-armed patrol boat that could rapidly engage identified threats out of the system. Such a long-range vessel is also expected to act as the Navy's workhorse, ferrying supplies, maintaining the slipspace-detection buoys and investigating anomalous ships and events. Lacking much in the way of armor and energy shields even in it's size range, it instead compensates with excessively heavy firepower and high manoeuvrability. As an extra measure of security, it also features a number of light stealth systems to avoid fights it cannot win.
For its size, the Varren-class is very well-armed, with four naval coilgun turrets and an undersized MAC proving the main source of firepower. Backing this up are five M58 Archer missile pods, which continuously fire salvos throughout the engagement. To reduce its vulnerability to fighters, a number of Streak missile pods and M870 point-defense guns are fitted onto the hull. It also has the ability to lay non-nuclear space mines.
As the Varren-class was JDM's first indigenous warship, it's fair to say that its development was a long and difficult affair. The original contract was issued by the JDF in February 2554, who found that their solitary Charon-class light frigate was woefully insufficient for securing their home system, particularly in light of the Prophet's Will's aggressive probing of the colony. The contract called for a heavily-armed and fast general-purpose warship that could be easily manned by a small crew. They stressed the need for the upcoming warship to be equipped with a fast Shaw-Fujikawa Translight Engine, allowing it to escape from fights it cannot win and rapidly investigate anomalous SOS signals. Finally, they requested that the upcoming ship be disproportionately heavily-armed for its size, and had a tonnage that did not exceed 450,000 tonnes.
As of mid-2556, only two of these warships exist: the lead ship JDSS Varren and the JDSS Further Into Hell. The ships have currently taken part in two battles:
The Second Battle of Jaeter: One of the corvettes, the JDSS Further Into Hell, assisted with the destruction of a fleet of heavy corvettes in orbit. The other corvette, the JDSS Varren, provided fire support for the troops groundside.
The second battle of Havannah: During the battle, the vessels assisted in the destruction of a Covenant remnant fleet, as it was used to fight off enemy approaching corvettes and harass CCS-battlecruisers with its smaller guns.
