- "Make the units better with new technology. Make more of them. And make them cheaper."
- ―Colonel James Ackerson
The SPARTAN-III Project was the third evolution of super soldiers created by the United Nations Space Command Defense Force (UNSCDF) under the control of the UNSC Military Intelligence Division and the UNSC Army Intelligence Activity. They were created as shock troops, used only for objectives that not even the elite Orbital Drop Shock Troopers could complete. Their actual mission, a secret to only the highest echelons of the Military Intelligence Division, was to trade lives for time - that is, they were sent on suicide missions to buy time for the remainder of Humanity. Three companies were created: Alpha Company, Beta Company, and Gamma Company. After the Human-Covenant War, Delta Company was finally created, but with a different mission than its predecessors.
Following the limited success of the ORION Project and the massive accomplishments that were the hallmark of the SPARTAN-II program, Colonel James Ackerson of the UNSC Army cooked up his own low-budget program to compete against Halsey's SPARTAN-II project. After having his proposal signed off on by the highest echelon of ONI command, Ackerson recruited Senior Chief Petty Officer Franklin Mendez, already experienced in the arts of SPARTAN training, and then kidnapped Kurt-051 to further enhance their induction program that's base was located on Onyx, a classified planet in the Zeta Doradus System whose location and existence was known only to a select few ONI and UNSC High Command personnel.
On December 27th, 2531, Alpha Company began its training at Camp Curahee on Onyx. The recruits were all orphans; children who had lost their parents, either on the fallen outer colonies as the Covenant continued their inexorable march of destruction, gradually nearing the inner colonies, or to natural causes. Because of the deaths of their parents and families, the children were all filled with anger and fear. But above all of this rage and hatred towards the Covenant, they had unshakable resolve. Unlike their predecessors, these candidates were all volunteers, none of them were taken from loving parents to train in the harsh regimen that the program enforced. All had leapt at ONI's offer to get vengeance for their deceased parents. And they soon came to realize that if they truly wanted to get that revenge, they would have to push themselves, pass the grueling training course, and not waiver in their implacable resolve.
