"Do you understand how lucky you lot have got it on Harvest? no?. Word is, one of your defense ships was built under the wrong specifications! the Hull has an extra 9cm of protection, its 15 meters taller, 8 meters wider and 9 meters longer! do you know why they call it the 'Blue Moon'? because that kind of engineering error only occurs once in a Blue Moon! "
―Unknown Engineer conversing with another on Reach, 2551

The UNSC Blue Moon (CA-878) was a Marathon-Class Heavy Cruiser built as apart of Battle Group X-Ray, and later re-purposed as apart of the UNSC Home Fleet following its leave from Harvest. The vessel briefly found itself under the banner of the Epsilon Eridani Defense Fleet during the Fall of Reach, however was only present on the planet for a later portion of the Battle. In late 2552 during the Battle of Earth, the ship was met with a heavy infestation of The Flood, resulting in much of its crew killed or becoming infected with the parasite, however many also escaped onto the UNSC Ulysses. The Vessel finally saw destruction at the hands of Sangheili Seperatists working with the UNSC Ulysses to bring down the infected ship.

One of the more notable aspects of the Vessel was the fact that during its construction, it was mistakenly built under the wrong specifications. This engineering error contributed to both the ships name 'Blue Moon'.
