The Skandien language, sometimes anglicised as Skandian, was a human North Germanic language originating from the Inner Colony of Luyten, and also came to be spoken on the worlds of Sedra, Sansar, Ludvika, Ryazan, and Valhalla. It evolved from a colonial creole of various languages on Luyten, chiefly Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, German, and English, as well as featuring some prominent Finnish loanwords. The language would spread as later inhabitants of Luyten migrated to establish other colonies.
Though having roots in several tongues, the Scandinavian languages provided the largest influence, with an estimated 60 to 65% of Skandien vocabulary having North Germanic roots. Much of the rest of the language was sourced from English, German, and partially Dutch, although some individual words, particularly profanities, had Finnish origins.
It remained one of the most wildly spoken languages on Luyten, and continued to thrive on colony worlds such as Sedra and Valhalla. As of 2558, there were 90 million native speakers of Skandien, the vast majority of which were located on Luyten and Sedra.
Etymology[]
The term "Skandien" is fairly easily traced back to "Scandinavian", referring to the geographic location on Earth from which many of Luyten's early colonists came from. As the language developed on Luyten, many took to referring to the blended tongue as "Scandinavian", which would eventually be shortened to "Skandien".

Development[]
Skandien developed from the various languages of the first colonists of Luyten, predominantly of the Germanic branch of the Indo-European family. The growth of the colony increased the influences on the population, and as Luyten developed from scattered settlements to a more inter-connected society, languages interacted more frequently. English was a predominant early influence to it being one of the most widely understood languages on Earth, but would eventually be overshadowed by German and Scandinavian settlers, who could lay claim to some of the first writers and filmmakers on the colony. The second major film made on Luyten was a Swedish-language war film titled Olympos Väg (English: Olympus Road), released in 2389 and set during the Mars Campaign.
The influence of Finnish settlers would also be felt on the language, as they also had a large presence in the artistic industries of Luyten. The first novel written on Luyten was in Finnish, and prior to Olympos Väg, the first major film produced on the colony was a Finnish-language comedy, Kiitos Kreivi!. The latter in particular would have a fairly significant cultural impact, popularising the use of Finnish curse words through several famous quotes from the film, which were known to be occasionally referenced even into the 26th century.
By the turn of the 25th century, several regional dialects had developed across Luyten, many sharing similar Germanic roots. The influence of social medias and travel across the planet allowed these dialects to blend together, and by the 2430s many people on Luyten were beginning to recognise what they called "Skandien".
Spread and Recognition[]
In the 2450s, many Luyten natives would form the bulk of the initial wave of colonists on Sedra, as well as a significant portion of subsequent waves. As such, the growing influence of early Skandien on Luyten would be reflected on Sedra as well. However, it would not be until the 2480s that it would be officially recognised as a language, rather than a dialect, by the UEG after large numbers of Skandien speakers played a role in the colonisation of Ludvika, Ryazan, and Sansar.
During the Insurrection, Skandien speakers played only a small role in the conflict. They were more common among the ranks of the UNSC, but Insurrectionist elements were well-known to be active on Sedra, although no successful rebellion occurred there. Anti-UEG pamphlets written in Skandien were commonly printed and distributed on Sedra, both physically and digitally. Smaller rebel cells were also known to be active on Ryazan and Ludvika.
Effects of the Human-Covenant War[]
The Covenant's genocidal war had a noticeable impact on Skandien, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 8 million native speakers. The entire populations of Ludvika, Ryazan, and Sansar were nearly wiped out, with only a few million managing to escape and establish a new colony away from the eyes of both Earth and the Covenant.
Sedra and Luyten were both spared the worst of the Covenant's warpath, but many were still killed in the line of duty as a result.
Culture[]
Skandien language films and literature were fairly popular in human space, especially in the Covenant War's aftermath. Films like Sönris Over Reach, Over Killerne uch Lang Veg, Murd in Willemstad, and Olympus Veg (a 2556 remake of the classic Olympos Väg) would exist somewhat prominently in the human cultural zeitgeist after the Human-Covenant War.
While not an exclusive or ubiquitous trait among Skandien speakers, the Ånvodska faith developed and is most widely practiced by them, especially on Sedra and Valhalla.
