Richard "Rick"-077 (born Richard Sanders; June 3, 2511) is one of the last surviving SPARTAN-II super soldiers. He, Sam-015, and Naomi-010 are the only Spartans of Beta-Red who survived the Fall of Reach, although the frigate they escaped to prevented them from participating in the rest of the Human-Covenant War. After sufficient repairs, the frigate was able to make its way back into UNSC space after the war, allowing Sam-015, Rick-077, and Naomi-010 to return to service. Biography[]Early Childhood[]Richard "Rick" Sanders was born on June 3rd, 2511 at New Albany, Draco III. When Rick was five or six years old, he was identified as one of the one hundred fifty candidates for the SPARTAN-II Program, being physically and mentally superior to almost all children his age. He was abducted and conscripted into the program by Dr. Halsey, with his official name changed to Richard-077. Like the rest of the Class-I SPARTAN-IIs, Rick was taken to Reach and trained by Chief Petty Officer Franklin Mendez and AI Déjà. Dom-094 was placed into Green Team, where he met Kurt-051, Dom-094, and Sam-015. Rick was able to form close friendships with Dom-094 and Sam-015, but his slight ego prevented him from getting along with many of the other SPARTAN-II trainees. As with all of the SPARTAN-II children, Rick-077 underwent the excruciatingly painful augmentation procedures. Rick was among those who recovered from the enhancements and was grateful that Dom-094 and Sam-015 had also survived with no defects, as several of the SPARTAN-II trainees died horrifically, with their bodies unable to take the rapid changes. Human-Covenant War[]Battle of Liber[]
In the month of March, 2526, the Covenant targeted the colony of Liber. While many of the Spartans were preparing for Operation: SILENT STORM, a few were needed at the populated colony. These few were Dom-094, Rick-077, Sam-015, and also Annie-003 from Red Team, and were designated the Platinum Team. Upon the Spartans' arrival at the colony, Vice Admiral Darryl Coatney informed them of the situation of the attack. Although the UNSC forces had a slight upper hand on the surface, the space battle did not seem winnable; there was nothing in Liber's orbital defenses that could take out the opposing assault carrier, the Divine Eradication. Having reviewed what had occurred in the Battle of Chi Ceti, Coatney urged the Spartans to board the Divine Eradication just as Blue Team had boarded the Unrelenting. Instead of bringing mere Anvil-II ASMs, however, the Spartans would bring a HAVOK nuke, as the assault carrier was at a safe distance from the UNSC vessels. The members of Platinum Team were aware of how Sam-034 perished at the Battle of Chi Ceti and vowed to not lose each other. The Spartans agreed that opposing elites would be their greatest threat, and decided to take full advantage Sam-015's unparalleled skill with anti-armor weapons; Sam-015 was to swiftly eliminate durable targets with an M41 SPNKR, while each of her teammates would go into this mission with two additional magazines for the rocket launcher.
Similar to the events of Chi Ceti, Platinum Team traveled to the Divine Eradication by piloting a G95M Gull with the UNSC Future Untold and several other UNSC vessels drawing the Covenant's attention. The UNSC vessels then fired their MACs at the assault carrier, enough to create an opening in the Covenant carrier's narrow section for the Spartans to board. Platinum Team subsequently left their Gull and used their thruster packs to propel themselves into the Divine Eradication.
The members of Platinum Team initially faced grunts and jackals and were able to take them out with little difficulty. When the Spartans began facing elites, Sam-015 to made liberal use of her M41 SPNKR against the durable enemies as planned, with her allies resupplying her whenever necessary. Once the Spartans had fought their way deep enough into the Divine Eradication, they armed the nuke, putting it on a timer. However, they prepared for remote detonation should the timer malfunction. With the bomb in place, the Spartans proceeded to fight their way out of the Covenant ship. Commander Bella Caseiro contacted the Spartans, informing them that she was waiting for them outside aboard the UNSC Muted Whisper. Minutes after the Muted Whisper had safely recovered the Spartans, the HAVOK detonated, severing the Divine Eradication at its "neck" and also destroying a nearby Covenant battlecruiser.
With the greatest naval threat gone, the Liber fleet proceeded to turn the tide of the naval battle. The Spartans were then deployed on the surface to help the UNSC ground forces finish off the Covenant infantry and also search for survivors. In orbit, the surviving UNSC ships were able to force the last two battlecruisers into retreat, ending the battle in favor of the humans. The synergy between the Spartans played a major role in their success at Liber, prompting the establishment of Platinum Team as a permanent Spartan unit under the leadership of Annie-003. Battle of Miridem[]
Platinum Team was sent to Miridem in order to help evacuate its civilians. Among the multiple escort rounds, Dom-094 discovered three children who were orphaned by and hiding from Covenant forces. Dom-094 took the children to the rest of the Platinum Team, and the SPARTANs escorted them to the nearest transport, successfully keeping the children from enemy fire. A Covenant power module was taken by a prowler to a top-secret installation on the planet Boralis. The prowler was pursued by a single Covenant stealth corvette. As only elites were being deployed to the installation to claim the power module, a company of ODSTs and Arjun-B414 did not seem to be not enough to hold off the enemies. Rick-077 and Dom-094 were the closest SPARTANs to Boralis and were sent by Paris-class frigate to assist in defending the core.
This would be the SPARTANs' first battle in the new MJOLNIR Mark V armor. Before the SPARTANs joined the battle, the Covenant forces deployed an anti-aircraft gun to prevent the UNSC from bringing in reinforcements by dropship. Rick-077 and Dom-094, were instead, deployed in drop pods. Being overconfident now that he had energy shields, Rick-077 charged into a group of five elites, sustaining damage from multiple needles before being knocked unconscious by the forestock of a needler. When the five elites were killed, Dom-094 brought Rick-077 to the UNSC base and the latter received temporary medical treatment, returning to battle several minutes later. Rick-077 was able to destroy the anti-aircraft gun, but traded blows with an elite on his way out of the cannon's base structure, being once again pummeled to near-death. The UNSC frigate eventually destroyed the corvette in space, putting a halt on Covenant ground reinforcements. Dom-094 was able to finish off the last two Sangheili, allowing the core's contents to be purged. Rick-077 was fortunate enough to not suffer any permanent damage that would physically hinder him in future engagements. Battle of Flora[]
Rick-077 and Dom-094 were called to the colony of Flora to defend it from the Covenant. The two SPARTANs were placed on an orbital defense platform to fight off boarding Covenant infantry. Eventually, Dom-094 and Rick-077 left the station, with the latter flying an OF92 Booster Frame and the former piloting an S-2 Seax. After battling through many Covenant interceptors, the two SPARTANs were ordered to land on Flora, and soon met up with Sam-015, who was already on the surface.
During the battle, ONI had intercepted a Covenant transmission regarding an artifact called the Contumacy. A map on the location of the artifact was hidden within an underground Forerunner structure on Flora. Rick-077, Dom-094, and Sam-015 were sent to the structure and fought through special operations elites. Although the SPARTANs could not reach the map before the Covenant forces did, ONI managed to track the map to the Covenant battlecruiser Unwavering Conviction, which by chance, was hovering a few hundred meters over Covenant-occupied land to refit. A D77-TC Pelican deployed the SPARTANs and a squad ODSTs just outside the Covenant territory.
The SPARTANs boarded the battlecruiser by using its gravity lift, and immediately faced an attack on all sides. Through teamwork, they cleared the room and moved on, although the majority of the ODSTs were killed in the attack. Just as the Unwavering Conviction left Flora's atmosphere, it was ambushed by the UNSC Alexandra and a few other cruisers. This enabled Annie-003 and Ryan-A022, who were on the other side of Flora earlier, to board the battlecruiser with a GA-TL1 Longsword. The SPARTANs of both sides joined forces aboard the ship, and then killed the shipmaster and took the map. On their way out of the Unwavering Conviction, however, the SPARTANs discovered that their Longsword was destroyed by the Covenant. Fortunately, a Pelican was able to pick up the SPARTANs at the nearest hangar bay, allowing them to make their escape. Operation: SQUALL[]
The Contumacy was hidden within a complex cavern on Ogygia. The Covenant ground forces were led personally by Fleet Master Dar 'Akamee. 'Akamee and his team of zealots got to the artifact first, but the Platinum Team immediately caught up right after. After brutal combat, all of the zealots lay dead, thanks to the SPARTANs' better teamwork. Dom-094 carried the forerunner device as the SPARTANs were pursued by more covenant forces. In the middle of the chaos, Dom-094 was separated from the team by a plasma grenade explosion. Due to the overwhelming number of Covenant forces in orbit, the rest of the Platinum Team was forced to leave their comrade behind. Rick-077 was furious and disheartened when the Platinum Team was forced to leave his best friend to die. Battle of Sigma Octanus IV[]Fall of Reach[]
On August 30th, 2552, most of the remaining SPARTAN-IIs were deployed to the surface of Reach by the Pelican, Bravo 001, from the UNSC Pillar of Autumn. When Bravo 001 was crippled, the SPARTANs were forced to make high-altitude jumps. Four of the SPARTANs did not survive the landing. Upon regrouping, Fred-104 divided the SPARTANs into four splinter groups: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta; Annie-003, Rick-077, and Sam-015 were in the Beta splinter team.
Team Beta was assigned to defend Orbital Defense Generator Facility A-331. Annie-003 ordered the SPARTANs to engage the oncoming thirty-two wraiths and 260 infantry in close quarters. Athough the SPARTANs broke the assault wave, another two Covenant armored divisions along with three cruisers reinforced the first wave. In the attack, Rick-077 found himself cornered by four elite ultras. Although he was able to kill three of the elites, he was only able to lower the shields of the fourth, who took him down with his plasma repeater. As Rick-077 fell to the ground, he tossed a grenade just behind the shield-broken elite and successfully killed his attacker just before he fell unconscious from his wounds. The UNSC Majestic was ordered by Central Command to bombard the area, but the Pelican Iron Fist arrived in time to extract any survivors; Rick-077's body was nearby at the time of the Iron Fist's arrival, allowing Sam-015 and Naomi-010 to help him onto the pelican, moments before the Majestic fired its MAC rounds onto the battlefield. The Iron Fist then took the SPARTANs to a Paris-class frigate in orbit, and Sam-015 froze Rick-077 in a cryo-chamber. With little choice, the frigate made an emergency slipspace jump in order to escape the Covenant. The resulting jump damaged the frigate, leaving it and its occupants stranded. Fortunately, no Covenant pursued, allowing the UNSC vessel's crew to make repairs unhindered. The ship was ready to return to UNSC space months after the Fall of Reach, allowing the three on-board SPARTAN-IIs to return to service, with Rick-077 receiving the proper medical attention for his "revival." Personality and traits[]Rick-077 notorious for being loud with his opinions, holding them in higher regard to others'. Although sometimes unpleasant to talk to, Rick-077 will always support his allies on the battlefield to the best of his ability. While Rick-077 is capable of effectively using a wide variety of weaponry, he fights better in close quarters. As a close-ranged fighter, Rick often takes advantage of armor lock to break the shields of stronger infantry such as elites at close range. Rick's greatest disadvantage is his impulsiveness, a trait he shares with fellow SPARTAN-II Solomon-069, with the tendency to act first and think later. Rick's most notable flaw exists partially as a result of a subconscious belief that his instincts and physical capabilities alone are enough to win him battles and that exerting mental energy when confronting enemies is therefore unnecessary. Surviving former staff members responsible for the SPARTAN-II program consider it to be a miracle that Rick-077 is among the SPARTAN-IIs to still be active after the Human-Covenant War. Overall, Rick-077 is among the less-skilled SPARTAN-IIs and as trainee, he ranked below the 50th percentile among his peers; by virtue of being a SPARTAN-II, however, he is more than capable of dominating nearly every enemy he faces on the battlefield. Because of Rick's perceived arrogance, most do not bother trying to get along with him. Although this was not as much of a problem during his first two years of training, many of the other SPARTAN-IIs could not stand him in throughout subsequent years. They would often try hard to hold back laughter whenever CPO Mendez yelled at or hit Rick with a stun rod whenever the latter did something "stupid." Rick does, however, bond well with his fellow members of the Platinum Team, Dom-094, Annie-003, Sam-015, and even Ryan-A022. Dom, in particular, is very close to Rick, and the two see each other as twin brothers. Besides his teammates, Rick also befriended Mike Parks and Kevin Lutz during the Battle of Miridem, working closely with the fellow soldiers in evacuating civilians from the colony. Equipment[]Armor[]Throughout his military career, Rick-077 has worn various configurations of MJOLNIR armor, each being an improvement from the last. MJOLNIR Mk IV[]
Rick-077's first known exoskeleton was a heavily customized suit of MJOLNIR MK IV armor, consisting of a MJOLNIR version of the ODST helmet and pauldrons and the (B) chassis. By 2544, Rick upgraded his helmet to have a CBRN HUL attachment, wore a UA/Bracer on his left forearm, attached Assault/Commando accessories to his body armor, and attached a soft case to his thigh. He also had parts of his armor painted silver to indicate his membership of the Platinum Team. MJOLNIR Mk V[]
When provided with MJOLNIR Mk V armor late in the year 2551, Rick-077 once again chose to wear an ODST helmet with a CBRN HUL attachment as well as Assault/Commando torso accessories. Rick's MJOLNIR Mk V armor also possessed UA/Multithreat pauldrons, a Tactical/TACPAD unit, a Tactical/Trauma Kit, and FJ/PARA knee pads. MJOLNIR GEN2[]
When he was recovered from Reach's orbit and received proper medical attention for his wounds, Rick-077 was given the choice to wear the second generation of MJOLNIR armor (MJOLNIR GEN2). Rick's first set of MJOLNIR GEN2 armor consisted of Enforcer helmet, Stalker torso armor with Crush patterning, Scout pauldrons, Recruit forearm guards, and LG-50 Bulk leg armor. MJOLNIR GEN2/Hellcat[]
By far his most advanced suit due to being largely reverse-engineered from salvaged technology that once belonged to ancient humanity, Rick-077 currently wears the Hellcat variant of MJOLNIR GEN2 armor and a Jumpmaster helmet. Weapons[]Unlike some of his teammates, Rick-077 is not particularly picky when choosing a weapon. However, when possible, he will bring an M392/M395 or a BR55/BR85N as his individual weapon as it can be used to engage enemies at nearly any distance. Rick-077’s preferred sidearm is a Disaster Contingency Autorevolver chambered in the immense .571 DC Magnum cartridge. After the Human-Covenant War, Rick-077 began using an M247 loaded with 12.7×43mmRB SLAP rounds in addition to his marksman rifle, using the former for close to medium distances and the latter for further ranges. Starting from the later stage of the Human-Covenant War, when armor plug-in technology was developed, Rick-077 began to alternate between a jetpack, armor lock, and a drop shield generator; Rick-077 equips the former two for offensive missions and the last for defensive engagements.
