SPARTAN-077, or Thomas, later Thomas Patterson, was a Lieutenant Commander and SPARTAN-II in the United Nations Space Command Navy and one of the few SPARTAN-II's to survive the Human-Covenant War. Kidnapped by Doctor Catherine Halsey and the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) at the age of six for the SPARTAN-II program, SPARTAN-077 would later become the leader of Naval Special Warfare (NavSpecWar) Team Havoc, consisting of himself, three other SPARTAN-II's, and later SPARTAN-III's towards the end of the Human-Covenant War.

Early life

Born on Earth, Thomas was the son of a police officer and a nurse. Raised in what was once known as the state of Indiana in the URNA until he was six years old, Thomas enjoyed a simple and quiet life. He was kidnapped by agents of ONI Section III for the SPARTAN-II program and replaced by a flash clone.

In 2517, Thomas, along with seventy-four other suitable candidates identified by Doctor Catherine Halsey, were kidnapped, replaced by flash clones, and brought to the UNSC military planet of Reach. The SPARTAN-II candidates would be introduced to Chief Petty Officer Franklin Mendez, their head training instructor. Mendez was no-nonsense, and employed training methods that some would likely consider brutal, the SPARTAN candidates would learn how to become efficient killers. Mendez would also instill into them the importance of functioning as a team. Thomas and his fellow SPARTAN candidates would also learn that despite being soldiers, honor and strong morals were also important. Chief Mendez often stressed to the SPARTAN candidates the importance of doing the right thing.
