"She is living proof that Class II was worth it." - ONI BWD operative

Rose-788 is a Spartan-II supersoldier of Class II who participated in the waning years of the Human-Covenant War and later the Forefather War. Born on Society six years prior to it's fall, she was abducted at a young age for the second class of the Spartan-II Program. She was recognised for her talent in stealth-based combat simulations and as a result became an asset of the Office of Naval Intelligence, often serving their interests more so than the interests of the wider UNSC. As an operative of ONI, she on many occasions worked under the clandestine Biological Warfare Division and was considered as a prime candidate for Operation: ULTIMA, the field test of the virus RESHEF produced as part of the BWD's Project SUNZI, but was ultimately deemed unfit.

Fighting in several major conflicts across the Inner Colonies such as the ones on Reach and Earth, she became a highly experienced and highly skilled combatant and was often regarded as a Spartan-of-choice when considering operations that required the utmost secrecy. Due to their somewhat close friendship due to the numerous battles they had fought together in, Rose commonly was paired together with Theo-783, another Spartan-II of the Class II program, and the duo were considered an exceptionally lethal and effective fighting force by ONI analysts. As the Human-Covenant War came to a close, she saw her role as a clandestine operative take centerfield, and she took part in numerous engagements against both Insurrectionist forces and the many splinter factions of the Covenant remnants. As the Forefather War began with the S'southi invasion of the galaxy, Rose became more involved in frontline combat as the S'southi's tactics made it very difficult for the types of operations Rose was specialised for to be carried out. She, alongside the 'Master Chief' John-117 and her friend Theo-783 saved the Galactic Alliance's war effort and ended the war in one fell swoop with Operation: RESOLUTE HOPE and the Second Battle of Installation 01.

Biography[]

Civilian[]

Born on the planet of Society, she was considered a perfect candidate for the Class-II program during her childhood and was abducted to become a Spartan.

Class-II[]

"She's proving to be quite the little overachiever. Still, that doesn't make her anything special."
Catherine Halsey

While being trained to be a Spartan, Rose quickly developed into one of the class's most skilled members. She was recognised for her prowess in combat simulations and proved to be a highly efficient stealth-killer.

Human-Covenant War[]

Black Operations[]

Immediately after entering active duty, Rose-788 was immediately put under direct Office of Naval Intelligence supervision and took part in multiple clandestine operations deep within Covenant-held space. The first major operation she took part in was Operation: BLACK CARD, an attempt by the Office of Naval Intelligence to prevent the Covenant from accessing the Society Catacombs beneath the glassed world of Society. It was her first time working alongside James Coleman, a highly skilled naval officer who she would work alongside many more times in the future, and also her first time working with Kayode Adetola, who she would ironically be tasked with assassinating many times.

Project TALARIA[]

Rose was chosen by the Biological Warfare Division to administer TALARIA to a large number of Covenant personnel by infecting the sanitation of a Covenant vessel with the serum. She was successful and the usage of TALARI turned the tide of the Battle of Natal.

Algolis[]

In October of 2551, Algolis came under attack from a sizable Covenant force. Following several successful operations against UNSC personnel on the planet, the Covenant had established several major resupply depots which fueled their ground war effort and allowed them to hold almost uncontested control over most of the planet's airspace. Rose-788 was chosen by the Office of Naval Intelligence for a clandestine operation to Gustav Ridge, which housed the largest and more important Covenant depot on the planet. Due to their ongoing offensives, it was minimally defended and ONI believed that one Spartan-II and a company of marines was more than sufficient for a torch-and-run operation. However, upon arriving in Gustav Ridge after dispatching several Covenant patrols, the CCS-class battlecruiser Indulgence of Faith arrived at the depot to resupply it, throwing a wrench in their finely-made plans. Acting against advice from the mission's ONI overseer, Rose-788 and the GX Company of marines advanced on the depot, managing to eradicate the defenders without alerting the vessel positioned above them. As they were unable to be evacuated due to the battlecruiser's presence, the team opted to board the ship to secure their own transport. While they were initially very successful due to the ship only having a skeleton crew because of ongoing operations, GX Company eventually began to become overwhelmed in the cruiser's hangar as Rose primed several antimatter charges to detonate. The group reunited and then fled shortly before Gustav Ridge was annihilated by the antimatter explosion.

Later, a failed attack on a heavily defended depot lead to Rose-788 being trapped alone as the rest of the UNSC team sent to assault the depot were evacuated, forcing her to commandeer a Covenant dropship and escape. She was able to plant and activate a nuclear device in the depot, resulting in it's destruction.

Reach[]

Rose was on Reach when the Winter Contingency was declared, and the planet invaded, and was therefore employed by ONI to safeguard it's interests on the planet and act in a covert capacity.

Infinite Penance[]
Aboard the infinite penance

Rose-788 in the Infinite Penance's hangar

By the night of August 11th, the Covenant had established a presence on Reach under the cover of a communications dark zone, making it almost impossible for the UNSC to know what was happening inside of the zone from the outside. As a result, elements of Noble Team were deployed to Szurdok Ridge to investigate the dark zone and what the Covenant were doing within. The effort discovered that the Covenant had landed an invasion force and as a result a counteroffensive was prepared. Rose-788 was deployed early on the morning of August 12th, before the beginning of the offensive, and was tasked with sabotaging the Covenant force as much as possible. After a series of skirmishes with Covenant forces along Szurdok Ridge, dawn broke and the attack by the UNSC began, with Rose already being in the field. Instead of joining the engagement, ONI delivered her a new set of orders - to board the SDV-class heavy corvette, the Infinite Penance. As the bulk of the Covenant army was engaged across the region, she found little difficulty in clearing out various Covenant patrols and garrisons and commandeering a Banshee, which she used to board the corvette. Once aboard, the crew engaged her and she managed to fight them off for long enough to reduce the coolant levels for the engines and reactors, causing the ship to begin to deteriorate. She escaped in a Spirit dropship she had taken from the vessel's hangar, only to be met with the scene outside; the supercarrier Long Night of Solace had appeared.

Mohács[]

Covenant forces had begun to deploy in the region surrounding the city of Mohács. The city was badly underdefended as the majority of the UNSC forces in the region were engaged elsewhere, leaving the city open to an attack. On August 14th, Rose arrived in the city to assist in the evacuation of ONI personnel and the destruction of sensitive information, but these efforts were interrupted when the Covenant besieged the city. A moderately sized force, lead primarily by Jiralhanae, began to rampage across the city while the UNSC scrambled to deploy reinforcements to the city. Thanks to the efforts of Rose and a number of garrisoned marines, the Mohács starport was held long enough for reinforcements to arrive and drive the Jiralhanae from the city. While the siege of Mohács would continue for many more days, Rose and the ONI team in the city had completed their assigned tasks and withdrew.

Quezon[]

The team lead by Rose-788 arrived in Quezon on August 19th. The city had been under attack for the past day, having been besieged around the same time as New Alexandria was. The city's defenses were significantly weakened already, and the Covenant had clearly gained the upper hand by the afternoon of the 19th. Evacuations were efficient and rapid, and by the 20th the majority of the civilian population was already off-world. The ONI team and Rose successfully demolished the ONI Building in downtown Quezon, eradicating all important and sensitive information and destroying one of the Covenant's landing zones. The situation in Quezon by early morning on the 21st was considered untenable and UNSC military forces were evacuated, the majority being sent to assist in the defense of New Alexandria.

Return to Szurdok Ridge[]

Early on the 23rd the situation across Reach had reached a point where the Covenant were clearly beginning to win. Manassas had fallen, as had Quezon and Mohács, with the cities of New Alexandria and Esztergom being some of the last major population centers that had not been captured by the Covenant, and even then, both cities were under increasingly intense pressure. Rose was deployed to Szurdok Ridge to investigate the region which had once again become a major point for the insertion of Covenant ground forces. Armed with a nuclear device, she remained undetected while she performed reconnaissance cloaked under the darkness of the night. The area had been overrun by Covenant forces, and a large number of vessels were assembling and preparing to be deployed to multiple points across the planet - including New Alexandria. In an effort to stall the Covenant, ONI ordered Rose to deploy the nuclear device - which she did, planting it within a panel on a Covenant watchtower near the point where Covenant ground forces were assembling. With the timer set for six hours, she evacuated from the ridge, which subsequently was severely damaged by the detonation of the device. Her mission to the ridge managed to destroy a large number of forces that were destined for Esztergom, allowing the city to hold out for several more days.

Esztergom, the Last City[]
"Major, with all due respect, Reach has already fallen."
―Rose-788 to MAJ. M. Wells

As August 25th dawned, Rose arrived in Esztergom. The city had been under attack for about a week up to that point, however the defenders had fought with tenacity and maintained a solid defensive line around the city. Covenant insertions into the city itself endured heavy casualties and the UNSC retained some aerial superiority, though the tide was slowly turning with the arrival of a number of hostile cruisers. Assisting in combat across the city, Rose was instrumental in delaying the Covenant takeover of the city. The efforts to defend the city slowly crumbled nevertheless as the Covenant had successfully overtaken every other major population center on the planet - allowing them to focus all of their efforts on Esztergom. By the 28th, the area surrounding the city had been glassed by the Covenant and the UNSC began to evacuate from the still-intact spaceport. Rose assisted in the defense of the spaceport until the end of the evacuations, and refused to board an evacuation craft, rather opting to remain on the planet in the event ONI required her services again.

Escape from Alföld[]

The Alföld region was quickly becoming overrun. All major off-world extraction points in the region had fallen with the capture and glassing of Esztergom. With the Covenant achieving complete aerial superiority over the region and UNSC forces now scattered and dissolving, time was running out. A vast majority of Alföld was subject to glassing, however the Covenant had established several garrisons in the region, and as long as Rose remained close to them she was not at risk of being exterminated by the overhanging fleet.

On the 29th of August, Rose received a comm transmission from a Codename: LUTENIST containing a set of coordinates for an underground Office of Naval Intelligence facility far to the north-west of Lábatlan. Lábatlan itself was one of the few remaining off-planet extraction points left on Reach and was under attack. With no way to acquire transport from the UNSC, she was forced to storm a Covenant outpost by herself and commandeer a dropship, which she did successfully. She then made her way out of the Alföld region and began heading towards the facility.

Lábatlan Region[]

Rose arrived in Lábatlan to resupply on August 30th. By this time, the battle there had concluded and the area was held by the Covenant. The UNSC forces that were stationed in the area had evacuated only about an hour prior. She raided the munitions depot and retrieved vital weapons and ammunition before continuing onwards. After heading directly to the facility, she destroyed the phantom to cover her tracks and entered, discovering that the Razor-class prowler Thousand and One Nights had been waiting for her, fully repaired and rearmed. Just as she was about to escape Reach aboard the prowler on the following day, the 31st, she detected a distress beacon deployed by Adeline Jaccoud who was travelling alongside a number of UNSC forces who had participated in Operation: WHITE GLOVE and failed to arrive in Lábatlan in time for the evacuations. She redirected them to her position, where they arrived but failed to locate a suitable area to land their aircraft and were shot down by Covenant pursuers. Rose managed to save those who survived the crashes and retreated into the facility with them. The group then boarded the prowler and fled Reach as the Covenant descended on their location.

Earth[]

Arrival from Reach[]

Directly after escaping from Reach, the prowler fled to multiple systems before returning to Earth to ensure that it was not followed. On Earth, Rose was debriefed by several ONI officials and was rotated back into service as a Black Ops operative.

Battle for Earth[]

As Earth came under attack, Rose, now suited in Mjolnir Mark VI, saw combat in the initial battles of Brisbane and Sydney, before being deployed to assist in the ongoing campaign in the Sahara. She saw her first combat in the Sahara at the Battle of Faya-Largeau, where she, alongside the ODST team Fireteam India and several marines, boarded the corvette Solitary Contemplation and destroyed it using the same technique she had used aboard the Infinite Penance; overloading the ship's reactors and engines by removing the coolant. It was a major success and the operation allowed the UNSC to mop up the remaining Covenant ground forces who were now left without air support. She was sent to Ghat with Fireteam India to assist in the defense and took part in the offensive that captured the Covenant deployment point at the Archaeological Park and drove the Covenant from the city. The Covenant then began a series of large-scale offensives across the Sahara rather than isolated attacks against specific cities, and a state of total war set in. Rose was deployed to Nouakchott where she was to erase the ONI building's records. Unbeknownst to both ONI and Rose, thousands of Yanme'e had taken up residence in the supercomputer below Nouakchott and in the citry's sewer system, and Rose was hopelessly outnumbered which lead to her capture at the hands of the Jiralhanae commanders of the battle.

Captivity[]

Baphilas[]

While being transported into Covenant space, where the Great Schism was actively being fought by various parties, the vessel she was imprisoned upon was attacked and captured by the Lights of Purity. Whilst they were a faction primarily lead by Sangheili, they were not sympathetic nor friendly to the human cause and treated her much the same as the Jiralhanae did; taking her to the planet Baphilas for interrogation. On Baphilas, she endured extensive torture as the leaders of the Lights of Purity believed the Office of Naval Intelligence was behind an attempted assassination on it's leader, Vetan 'Hanam, and therefore they attempted to get her to confess after it became apparent she was an ONI operative. Her extreme mental fortitude and physical endurance allowed her to overcome the torture, being brought to the brink of death several times only recover rapidly because of advanced Covenant healing techniques. When it became apparent that she knew nothing of the assassination attempt, and was unwilling to divulge any information regarding anything else, she was left to rot in a prison cell aboard the Seeker of Salvation. A highly energetic component she had smuggled aboard became useful when she used it to temporarily disable the prison cell's barrier, and with her raw strength and combat prowess she was able to overpower the guards, retrieve their weapons and escape aboard a slipspace-capable lifeboat. Unbeknownst to her, the lifeboat's drive was non-functional and she was rapidly recaptured by teams deployed from the various vessels nearby. Impressed with her strength and determination, Vetan 'Hanam ordered her transferred to a far more remote facility while they devised a plan of what to do with her talents.

Pavodorum[]

She soon found herself aboard a prison facility situated within an asteroid on the outer reaches of the Baphilas system. It was in the depths of this facility that she was reunited with her armour; before being transported yet again to the Seeker of Salvation. Now aboard, she was briefed by Khisze Hagramai, the right-hand of Vetan 'Hanam. They were going to use her to gain entrance to a Forerunner facility they had uncovered on the remote planet of Pavodorum whether she agreed to it or not. Seeing this as a perfect opportunity to attempt to escape captivity a second time, she acted cooperative and soon the Seeker of Salvation arrived at their destination. Upon their arrival on the surface of the planet, Rose was escorted to the objective; the facility, where she granted the Sangheili warparty access to the interior.

Rose on Pavodorum

Rose-788 in the facility on Pavodorum

The facility was extensive with several large halls filled from the ground to the roof with rows of extravagant lights and terminals which projected glyphs and housed information, with the information's accesspoint being a large terminal on a hexagonal platform in the center of the room. Likely having detected their presence and deeming it an unwelcome intrusion, the facility's contingent of sentinels began to attack the Sangheili allowing Rose to escape her binds and fight her way out of the facility, locking the warparty inside with the sentinels and escaping aboard their dropship. Once airborne, she returned to the Seeker of Salvation as the craft she commandeered was not slipspace capable - therefore her only way to return to Human-controlled space was to board the cruiser. Upon arrival in one of the ship's hangar bays, Rose disembarked and fought through a sizable number of Lights of Purity forces before ultimately arriving in the ship's prison block where she released the prisoners housed within who were primarily made up of Jiralhanae. While hostile to humans, they recognised the fact that Rose had saved them and tolerated her existence for the time being, allowing her to push towards her goal; a singular Ren-class utility shuttle. With the majority of the response effort mounted by the crew being focused towards the large group of Jiralhanae rampaging towards the hangar bays looking for a way off the ship, Rose dealt with comparably fewer hostiles than before and was easily able to reach the shuttle, escape the vessel and enter slipspace.

Return to Earth[]

By the time Rose-788 returned to Earth in May of 2553, the battle had concluded long ago and the Human-Covenant War had come to a close. She was debriefed by the Office of Naval Intelligence about her time in captivity and the discovery that the Lights of Purity had held her captive significantly worsened the already bad relations between the UNSC and the LoP. Her armour was in terrible condition and required extensive maintenance, and instead of going through the lengthy process of refurbishing the old suit she was issued a suit of the first generation of Mjolnir Mark VII, with the intention that she would return to service relatively soon and therefore act as a field test for the further deployment of the armour.

Elysia[]

When the Third Battle of Elysia commenced, Rose-788 was offworld as part of Spartan Team Ultraviolet and Operation: ASTRA. Upon the latter's conclusion, Ultraviolet arrived on Elysia to participate in the battle, playing a pivotal role by delivering the recovered Offensive Bias to the Galactic Alliance, turning the tide of the battle in orbit.

Installation 01[]
"His shuttle. Cassandra says his shuttle is nearby."
―Rose to John-117 and Theo-783

In August of 2566, Rose-788 was chosen alongside Theo-783 and John-117 to take part in a mission to Installation 01, dubbed 'Operation: RESOLUTE HOPE'. Their part in RESOLUTE HOPE was instrumental in the survival of the Galactic Alliance, which was very much on the losing side of the conflict at that point in time. They were, alongside a sizable force of UNSC marines, armour and aerial vehicles, deployed to the ring by Fleet Admiral James Coleman on the 25th of August. They encountered stiff resistance from the S'southi on the ring, but were able to best them in each encounter. In the control room, Rose personally executed Kalam, one of the S'southi's top military minds and a constant thorn in the side of the Galactic Alliance, making him one of her most high-profile target in her career. After engaging hostile forces across the underground facility known as The Abyss, her and her team were transported to the Confluence facility within the skies of the ring. She fought alongside her comrades in a desperate bid to reach Binding Enlightenment before he could remotely halt the ring's firing sequence, and were successful; plowing through his elite guards and S'southi reinforcements from the battle raging above. After Victoria Theodorides sacrificed herself, the three Spartans managed to kill the ancient ancilla and retreat from the ring aboard it's shuttle just before it fired, wiping out the entire S'southi Armada.

Personality[]

"She prefers to work alone; in silence. Her personality is reflective of her methods."
―Office of Naval Intelligence report regarding Rose-788

Rose-788 is by all regards a lone wolf. She prefers to operate alone or with a small group under her command and to fight her battles silently under the cover of darkness, and this is reflective of her personality. She is somebody who is used to being alone, finding comfort in silence, but is not unused to the noisy and hectic environment of the battlefield. On the surface, she comes across as withdrawn and quiet, often avoiding conversations that she considers unnecessary and therefore is a woman of few friends. As a Spartan-II, she lives for the fight and is loyal to the Office of Naval Intelligence first and Humanity second - however she is not afraid to disregard orders if she deemed them idiotic, this trait of independence being rather rare among most other Spartan-IIs but common among those in her field. As an effect of her augmentations and intense training as a Spartan-II, her mental fortitude is almost unbreakable and even the most advanced and ruthless torture techniques employed by her foes such as the Lights of Purity have failed to break her in the past, despite the mental and physical scars they left her.

While confident and hopeful like most Spartans, the scars of past events have left her with notable amounts of trauma, though the severity is not enough to interfere with her work. Despite her withdrawn personality, she enjoys the company of those she considers her friends.
