Episode II: Of Ambitions and Betrayal
2352 Hours, December 10, 2551 (UNSC Military Calendar), aboard the UNSC Mother of Invention, unknown system |
* Agent_North walks along a ship corridor, looking for South
* Agent_Texas walks out of the tech bay, now fully repaired and powered up with a few tweaks.
<Agent_Texas> Hey, North.
<Agent_North> Hey.
<Agent_North> Seen South anywhere?
<Agent_Texas> No, I haven't.
<Agent_Texas> Aren't you supposed to be sleeping?
<Agent_North> You mean on that drug York told everyone to take?
<Agent_Texas> Yeah. Keeps you under until you've slept for exactly 8 hours. Helps the augmentations take effect properly.
<Agent_Texas> Carolina's under right now. It'll help her heal faster too.
<Agent_North> I dunno...I'm not sure I like the idea of being unable to wake up on my own.
<Agent_Texas> We'll all need the edge once we find the director.
<Agent_Texas> York's got a list of everyone who's already taken it. South's name wasn't on it.
<Agent_Texas> Maybe she didn't know. She spends a lot of time on her own these days.
* Agent_California approaches Tex and North
<Agent_California> Hello.
<Agent_Texas> Hey, Cal.
<Agent_North> Damn. I'd better find South, give her the news
* Agent_North walks off
<Agent_Texas> Cal, where have you been? |
* Adamska_B156 contacts Mordred |
* Agent_North activates his COM |
* Mordred pipes in his own voice, modified to sound like the Director.
<Mordred> (Director's voice) Well, hello Agent Texas.
* Agent_Texas stops.
<Agent_North> Uh-oh
<Agent_Texas> Director.
* Agent_North follows, picking up a discarded assault rifle and keeping an eye out for Maine
<Agent_Texas> Were you behind this?
<Mordred> (Director's voice) I must apologize for this informal method of communication.
<Agent_Texas> You've got more than that to apologize for.
<Mordred> (Director's voice) Circumstances prevented me from attending to this matter directly.
<Agent_Texas> North, where's California?
<Agent_North> I'm reading another heat-sig in the Med Bay
<Agent_North> It's California!
<Agent_Texas> Go find him, North.
* Agent_Wyoming reaches the bridge and gets to work.
<Mordred> (Director's voice) I understand the current circumstances are very complicated.
<Mordred> (Director's voice) You must be very confused, Agent Texas.
<Mordred> (Director's voice) So much is happening.
<Mordred> (Director's voice) So many lives in your hands.
<Mordred> (Director's voice) Can you handle the pressure?
<Agent_Texas> Yeah, you've had that burden before.
<Agent_Texas> Looks like you've failed.
<Mordred> (Director's voice) Perhaps.
<Mordred> (Director's voice) Or maybe I simply succeeded.
<Agent_Texas> Succeeded in what?
<Agent_Texas> Turning your own agents against you?
<Agent_Texas> In becoming an excuse of a human being?
<Mordred> (Director's voice) Maybe this is all part of the plan.
<Mordred> (Director's voice) Did you ever think about that?
<Agent_Texas> Yeah.
<Agent_Texas> If it is, it sure is a stupid plan.
<Mordred> (Director's voice) Just another simulation, Texas.
<Mordred> (Director's voice) Just like all the others.
<Agent_Texas> Is that all we are to you?
<Agent_Texas> Experiments?
<Mordred> (Director's voice) Well, I can't say it's a pleasant experience.
<Mordred> (Director's voice) You're more like me than you think, Agent Texas.
* Agent_Wyoming hits the artificial gravity.
* Agent_Texas lands on her feet.
<Agent_Texas> Oh yeah?
<Agent_Texas> How's that?
<Mordred> (Director's voice) Created, used, and discarded. |
* Agent_California goes to med-bay |
* Agent_Texas hears the gunfire and enters the medical bay.
<Agent_Texas> North.
<Agent_Texas> Where's Penny?
<Agent_North> Can't see anything. I might have hit Cal.
<Theta_AI> North...I don't think that's Cal...
* Agent_Texas walks up to the crate and realizes with horror who it is.
<Agent_Texas> North...
<Agent_Texas> ...you shot Penny.
<Agent_Texas> She's dead.
<Agent_North> Oh...
* Agent_Wyoming catches up.
<Agent_North> oh no...
<Mordred> (Director's voice) Well, that's all I needed to hear.
<Agent_North> nononono
<Agent_North> Where's Cal?!
<Mordred> (Director's voice) Excellent work, agents.
<Mordred> (Director's voice) You always exceed my expectations.
* Agent_Texas cuts off the COM forcefully.
<Agent_North> I'm sure that was him! The armour outline matched up! |
<Zeta_AI> Connection lost, boss.
|
* Agent_Maine jabs Wyoming and slams his palm into Texas' chest. |
* Agent_California throws grenade at North |
* Agent_Wyoming inspects one of the empty weapons lockers. It's lined with NXRA material. |
* Agent_South flies back to the Mother of Invention. |
<Zeta_AI> Disabling the Mother of Invention's sensors now. |
* Agent_Wyoming slows time with Gamma, pulling the grenade free and throwing it free of the battling Freelancers. It explodes just out of range, throwing both to the ground. |
<Agent_Texas> Carolina! |
<Agent_North> You never were a patient one. Please, don't make me shoot. |
* Agent_Texas bursts through the door. |
<Mordred> Zeta, get me a feed to South. |
<Agent_North> I'm not seeing Maine or California helping you, South. |
<Agent_Texas> Come on, let's haul these two to the holding cells.
* Agent_Carolina then turns her attention to Texas.
<Agent_Carolina> I kicked my teammate's ass!
<Agent_Texas> It wasn't him, Carolina.
<Agent_Texas> It was Sigma.
<Agent_Texas> And...Penny's dead.
<Agent_Texas> California though, he's a clear-cut traitor.
* Agent_Carolina looks shocked, then suspicious, then wearily sad.
<Agent_Carolina> Sigma... dammit.
* Agent_Texas puts California and Maine on a gurney and hauls them out of the room.
<Agent_Texas> Come on, let's go see if North's alright.
<Agent_Carolina> Yeah.
<Agent_Wyoming> I'd love to, but . . . I'm afraid I must beg some assistance.
* Agent_Texas helps Wyoming to his feet.
<Agent_Texas> South has some things to answer for too.
<Agent_Carolina> Good idea.
* Agent_Wyoming reveals the bloody tear in his armor's suit.
<Agent_Wyoming> That grenade threw a bit of shrapnel my way.
<Agent_Texas> You need some medical treatment too.
<Agent_Wyoming> It would have been worse, if not for Gamma.
<Agent_Texas> Well, what do you know. The sly bastard did some good.
* Agent_Texas reaches the armoury with Carolina and Wyoming.
* Agent_Carolina walks over to the twins, noting all the blood.
<Agent_Texas> Wyoming, I'll keep Maine in your care.
<Agent_Texas> As soon as you're recovered, I want you to get Sigma out of Maine's head.
<Agent_Wyoming> I'll take care of it.
<Agent_Wyoming> These AI. They're a double-edged knife.
<Agent_Wyoming> Just as dangerous to us as they make us to our enemies.
* Agent_Carolina leans down stiffly and checks North's pulse, and is satisfied.
<Agent_Carolina> North's gonne be okay, if we can stop the bleeding.
* Agent_Carolina completely ignores South, though her injuries are much worse than North's.
<Agent_Texas> Carolina, help Wyoming and the twins there too for medical treatment.
<Agent_Texas> They'll need to get those bullets taken out of them.
<Agent_Texas> I'll bring Cal and Maine to the holding cells and see you at recovery.
* Agent_Texas places South none-too-gently on a trolley.
<Agent_Carolina> North? Can you hear me?
<Agent_Texas> Come on, get him to the bay first.
* Agent_Texas helps move North carefully onto a trolley.
* Agent_Wyoming is wheeled away with the twins.
* Agent_Texas hauls Cal and Maine down the other side hallway.
* Agent_Carolina pushes the trolley with her good arm, grimfaced.
* Agent_Carolina reaches the recovery bay and help the doctors move the Freelancers onto some beds.
* Agent_Wyoming grabs a medic's arm.
<Agent_Wyoming> Save the anesthetic for the real wounded, mate.
<Agent_Wyoming> Just find me a bottle of good rum.
<Agent_Wyoming> And Earl Gray, if you have any.
* Agent_Texas enters the medical bay alone.
<Agent_Texas> Well, it's been almost 8 hours.
<Agent_Texas> The others will be in for a hell of a story when they wake up.
<Agent_Texas> I'll leave you guys here, if you don't mind.
<Agent_Texas> I need to have a word with Carolina.
* Agent_Texas exits with Carolina and the doors slide shut behind them.
<Agent_Carolina> Dammit... next time I'm out like that, Texas, just wake me up and gimme some painkillers.
<Agent_Texas> Sorry. We were in an emergency.
<Agent_Texas> Carolina...I couldn't have done it without you.
* Agent_Carolina leans against the wall, cradling her useless arm with her functional one, seemingly unaffected.
<Agent_Carolina> Maybe, maybe not.
<Agent_Texas> You're still not fully recovered yet.
<Agent_Texas> You need to rest as well.
* Agent_Texas sighs.
<Agent_Texas> We're a few Freelancers short now, and we have some new...enemies to deal with.
<Agent_Texas> This really sets back our plan to find the director.
* Agent_Carolina looks up at Tex, somewhat wild-eyed.
<Agent_Carolina> If this arm's gonna take too long to heal, I want a better one.
<Agent_Texas> Take it easy.
<Agent_Texas> We've got time.
<Agent_Texas> But look...while you were out, the director contacted me.
<Agent_Texas> I'm pretty sure he was behind all this.
<Agent_Texas> If he really wants us to find him like you said...he's really not making it easy.
<Agent_Carolina> Behind what? Making our teammates go crazy? How?
* Agent_Texas grimaces.
<Agent_Texas> He has to answer for that.
<Agent_Texas> As always.
<Agent_Carolina> Before Maine attacked me, he said... he said their names.
<Agent_Texas> Yeah. I figured.
<Agent_Texas> I did some digging last night, and I figured it all out.
<Agent_Texas> During your classes, did Sigma ask about...metastability?
* Agent_Carolina frowns, as if unable to recall.
<Agent_Carolina> Ugh.... they're whispering again...
* Agent_Carolina reaches back and turns Eta and Iota off.
<Agent_Texas> I think they woke you up when they saw you were in danger.
<Agent_Texas> Wyoming's right...these things are a doubled-edged blade.
<Agent_Carolina> That... that word. Meta... something? Sigma may have mentioned it, but these two seem to know what it is, too.
<Agent_Texas> I think Sigma is looking to capture every AI fragment that the director created.
<Agent_Texas> Since each of them is only a part of an individual, Sigma wants to put them all together and become whole.
<Agent_Texas> So he's hunting the Freelancers with AIs.
<Agent_Carolina> Using Maine...
<Agent_Texas> But what I don't understand is, why would he fall in with the director?
<Agent_Texas> If the director ripped all these traits from a single AI, he wouldn't want Sigma to achieve metastability.
* Agent_Carolina turns around and punches the wall with her good arm.
<Agent_Carolina> I GAVE him that AI!
<Agent_Carolina> Dammit!
* Agent_Texas gives a humourless smile, despite the seriousness of the situation.
<Agent_Texas> Well, at least it's not you hunting down the Freelancers.
<Agent_Texas> They'd stand no chance.
* Agent_Texas becomes serious again.
<Agent_Texas> Carolina, something doesn't add up.
<Agent_Carolina> I'd say.
<Agent_Texas> The director wouldn't let Maine turn against the Freelancers even if it gets us out of his way.
* Agent_Carolina is calm again, and appears thoughtful.
<Agent_Texas> I feel like we're being manipulated somehow.
* Agent_Texas freezes.
<Agent_Texas> Wait a minute...
<Agent_Carolina> What?
<Agent_Texas> When I dropped off Cal and South in the holding cells...
<Agent_Texas> ...he wasn't there. The mercenary.
<Agent_Texas> How could I have missed that?
* Agent_Carolina frowns.
<Agent_Carolina> The... mercenary? What mercenary?
<Agent_Texas> There was a mercenary who was stealing information on the Freelancer project.
<Agent_Texas> I detained him, and wanted to have some words with him...my own way.
<Agent_Texas> But the director insisted on talking to him privately.
<Agent_Texas> After that...I saw...
* Agent_Texas trails off.
<Agent_Texas> He was on the dropship. The director let him go.
<Agent_Texas> And...Cal knew about it. He was there. That explains everything!
<Agent_Texas> But...that couldn't be all.
<Agent_Texas> It had to be important.
<Agent_Texas> Not just the mercenary...
<Agent_Texas> What if...
<Agent_Texas> What if the director gave the mercenary an AI fragment?
<Agent_Texas> I wouldn't be surprised if the director saw it coming. Sigma turning against us.
<Agent_Texas> That's it...the director loosed Maine on us knowing that Sigma will never find every single fragment.
<Agent_Carolina> The bastard.
<Agent_Texas> Carolina. We need to find the mercenary. And we need to get that AI back.
<Agent_Carolina> ... why? So Maine can come after us for every one of them?
* Agent_Texas turns to look at Carolina.
<Agent_Texas> Carolina, these AIs are dangerous. In the wrong hands...
<Agent_Texas> I was wondering how the ship was being torn apart by...by an unknown force.
<Agent_Texas> Grenades exploding on their own.
<Agent_Texas> Power shorting out.
<Agent_Texas> Gravity disappearing.
<Agent_Texas> The ship opening itself up.
<Agent_Texas> That AI is more dangerous than Maine.
<Agent_Texas> We were lucky to win that fight.
* Agent_Texas meets Carolina's eyes.
<Agent_Texas> Then again...maybe it was because of you.
<Agent_Texas> Before you woke, I kept trying, and trying, and trying.
<Agent_Texas> And no matter what, I just couldn't keep up.
<Agent_Texas> I can't lead these Freelancers, Carolina.
<Agent_Texas> That's your job.
<Agent_Carolina> Yeah. And in case you haven't noticed, I spend more time wondering what the hell is going on than actually solving anything.
* Agent_Carolina looks away frustratedly.
<Agent_Texas> Well...once we get Sigma out of Maine's head, I'm sure South and Cal have a lot to explain.
<Agent_Texas> Maybe they can answer your questions.
<Agent_Carolina> All the Director had to do was chip away at faults that already existed. Because I didn't keep them in line.
<Agent_Texas> Well, once everyone hears what happened, they'll be listening you.
<Agent_Texas> Let's be honest, every Freelancer in the program wants a piece of the director for one reason or another.
<Agent_Texas> But now it's personal.
* Agent_Carolina seems to buck up a little, maybe out of pride or perhaps genuine courage.
<Agent_Carolina> When I woke up, you were wheeling me down some hallway.
<Agent_Carolina> What was that about?
* Agent_Texas looks away.
<Agent_Texas> I found South standing in front of you. About to kill you.
<Agent_Texas> I stopped her. North showed up, and I decided to get you out of there.
* Agent_Carolina looks surprised for a moment, then sighs.
<Agent_Carolina> Should've guessed.
<Agent_Carolina> Uh... thanks.
* Agent_Texas shakes her head.
<Agent_Texas> It shouldn't have happened. I asked North and Wyoming to leave you to find Cal and Maine.
<Agent_Texas> If you were killed, it would have been my fault.
* Agent_Carolina smirks.
<Agent_Carolina> One thing you didn't fail at.
* Agent_Texas chuckles quietly.
<Agent_Texas> Yeah.
<Agent_Texas> At least it counts for something too.
<Agent_Texas> I didn't think South was like that...
<Agent_Texas> ...I told North to watch her, but I would never have thought...
<Agent_Carolina> Nobody would have.
<Agent_Carolina> We're supposed to be a team.
<Agent_Carolina> We're supposed to look out for each other.
<Agent_Carolina> Not... stab each other in the back.
* Agent_Texas laughs bitterly.
<Agent_Texas> I guess CT was on our side all along.
<Agent_Texas> We just didn't realize it at the time...
<Agent_Texas> ...well, I didn't.
* Agent_Carolina looks very uncomfortable at the mention of CT.
<Agent_Texas> You were the only one who did.
* Agent_Texas pulls out a dog tag from her armour.
<Agent_Texas> This helped me figure out what the director's done.
* Agent_Carolina raises an eyebrow.
<Agent_Texas> CT left it for me.
<Agent_Texas> She...said I was trustworthy.
<Agent_Texas> And she called me a friend.
* Agent_Carolina listens with a grim expression.
* Agent_Texas clenches her fist around the dog tag.
<Agent_Texas> I could have taken her alive. I know that.
<Agent_Texas> She was on the ground.
<Agent_Carolina> ... were you using Omega at the time... by any chance?
* Agent_Texas nods slowly.
* Agent_Carolina sighs wearily, realizing something.
<Agent_Carolina> You're right. These AI have been tearing us apart all along.
<Agent_Texas> No.
<Agent_Texas> Theta saved North today, twice.
<Agent_Texas> Gamma saved Wyoming.
<Agent_Texas> And...your AIs woke you up when we needed you the most.
<Agent_Texas> I think that if we stop using them as the director wants us to...they can be our friends as well.
<Agent_Carolina> They're traits. What the hell is Omega supposed to be?
<Agent_Texas> Rage.
<Agent_Texas> And I never want to use him again.
* Agent_Carolina gives a curt nod of approval.
<Agent_Texas> So.
<Agent_Texas> We wanted a lead on the director.
<Agent_Texas> I'd say this mercenary's a good place to start.
<Agent_Texas> We'll see what South and Cal know about him, and we'll find him.
<Agent_Texas> We'll make him pay for Penny.
<Agent_Texas> And then we'll find the director.
* Agent_Texas stands up.
* Agent_Carolina reaches up and pinches the bridge of her nose, wincing.
<Agent_Carolina> You know what?
<Agent_Carolina> All this time, all those missions...
<Agent_Carolina> I've never looked forward to anything like I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the Director.
<Agent_Texas> That makes two of us.
<Agent_Carolina> Funny how all his hard work is gonna bite him in the ass.
<Agent_Texas> Yeah.
<Agent_Texas> Well, the others are going to be waking up soon. I think a debriefing is due.
<Agent_Texas> I think everyone has the right to know now about these AIs.
* Agent_Carolina pulls a stim from her belt storage and pops it into the crook of her right elbow.
<Agent_Carolina> You can do the honors.
<Agent_Texas> Sure thing. You need your rest.
<Agent_Texas> It's been a long night.
<Agent_Texas> I'll check up to see how Wash is recovering from Epsilon. And then I'll get York and some others to start fixing the holes we punched in the ship.
* Agent_Carolina snorts.
<Agent_Carolina> Rest?
<Agent_Carolina> I don't think any of us are going to get any real rest until this is over with.
<Agent_Texas> Carolina, you're only human.
<Agent_Texas> It might seem like a setback sometimes.
<Agent_Texas> But really, you should be glad of it.
<Agent_Texas> It's more than some of us get...
* Agent_Carolina eyes the still visible wires from Tex's wounds and nods slightly.
<Agent_Carolina> Okay.
<Agent_Carolina> But if anybody tries to off me this time, they won't live to regret it.
* Agent_Texas laughs quietly.
<Agent_Texas> I'll bet.
* Agent_Texas leaves Carolina to the doctors and heads off to see if the others are awake.
<Agent_Texas> What a hell of a night...
