―Owain-B176, ordering the last marine squad to evacuate from New Alexandria

Owain-B176, is a Beta company Spartan-III super soldier of the UNSC. He was conscripted to the Spartan-III program at eight years of age and eventually became a Spartan-III super soldier during the Human-Covenant War. He continued to serve for the UNSC after the war against insurrectionists and Covenant remnant up until his desertion.

Biography

Childhood

Owain Ramirez was born on May 31st, 2529, to a father of Welsh descent and a mother of Spanish origin on the planet of Leonis Mironis IV. Due to his mother having many sisters, he spent his early years with many cousins from the extended family. This ended up shaping him into a very protective and responsible young child while looking out for his younger cousins. He’d continue to look out for them until 2537 when the Covenant arrived and attacked his colony. His parents told him to wait for them at the spaceport as they left to look for the rest of his family but minutes after they left, the Spaceport’s main entrance was sealed as Covenant began landing Phantoms in the city. Owain, despite initial protest, was dragged into the final transports off-world and reached Leonis Mironis VII. He saw from the view glass of his transport how the Covenant glassed two of the three colonies established in the Leonis Mironis system, Leonis Mironis II and IV, while Leonis Mironis VII was spared.

Upon arriving at Leonis Mironis VII, he was found by ONI operatives that were able to easily bring him with them to become a Spartan-III for the new Beta company.

Training

Mendez: "Owain’s overprotectiveness of his peers is going to get him killed."
Kurt-051: "His vigilance to protecting his comrades, Chief Mendez, will make sure we don’t lose as many Spartans as we did with Alpha company."
―Chief Mendez and Kurt-051, discussing the behavior Owain-B176 displayed in the training matches

Owain was awoken at Camp Currahee on Onyx where he would be trained with many other potential spartans. Their main test to become spartans was to jump out of a large dropship. Owain initially hesitated and looking around and understanding how others were similarly hesitent, but soon saw several others jump out of the dropship with zero hesitation, and soon followed suit. In the first meal and first night in the barracks, he exchanged names and stories with the other children and soon understood most, if not all of the candidates had very similary tragedies and very similar desires. As one of the oldest conscripted children, he saw them the same as his smaller cousins and felt that he had to look after them.

During training, Owain was one of the largest trainees among Beta company but was by no means the best in close quarters, Owain would adapt a mix of boxing and wrestling, using his size to his advantage but would still be unable to beat faster opponents. However, he was much more adept in sparring matches with quarterstaffs, using his large size and strength to push and bash his opponents. During one of his training matches, Owain was given a machine gun loaded with training rounds to act as the Juggernaut against two other full teams. Owain would win this match and would introduce Owain to his preferred weapon.

Over the years, Owain would be one of the main voices of reason among the young trainees. Intervening in conflicts between other trainees and would help in resolving disagreements. This resulted in Owain being considered to lead his Spartan team for actual missions. He developed good relationships with the vast majority of Beta-IIIs, so much so that they all held positive opinions about Owain and would hold no hostility against him during the entire training period.

On April 2540, Owain was given his own squad to lead as Echo leader. Comprised of Hammond-B049, Diego-B189 and Berta-B201 and himself, Owain would train closely with his fellow squadmates and form a very close bond with each other. Regardless, Owain's habit of avoiding losing his squadmates resulted in several training matches resulting in losses.

On May 2540, Echo team lost another match against Lima. Hammond-B049 would grow increasingly frustrated with the losses his team were experiencing. He questioned Owain if he was taking his training seriously to which Owain answered yes. In their next training exercise, Echo was to fight against India team in a match of Assault with a single life rule. Owain directed his team to slowly and methodically approach the objective as quietly as possible. By the time they reached the objective, time was starting to run out. Hammond was frustrated by Owain's methods, as they had yet to eliminate the enemy team. But after having set the objective, Owain ordered his team to prepare to defend the objective as the enemy team would panic and rush to deactivate the bomb. Owain successfully predicted what the enemy team did, and Echo beat India without taking losses of their own. When approached by Hammond to question his strategy, he explained that by making India think they were hiding, they successfully drew them out. He further explained that misdirection is a very versatile tool in any situation, stating that by pointing the enemy to one direction, he could avoid casualties in his team. Hammond finally understood Owain's methods and the members of Echo team grew a deep trust for Owain as their leader and Owain was conscious of the responsibility given with that trust.

On October 2442, Owain was injured in an accident while sparring against Victor-B011. Initially the members of Echo team were infurated as they grew a deep trust with their leader and were considering getting back at Victor. They were stopped by Owain, who ordered them to stand down. Owain stated that it was simply a training accident and nothing would come of getting revenge against a fellow candidate.

On March 2545, he alongside three hundred other candidates graduated from their training and received their SPI armor for their next missions. Owain and the members of Echo would end up assigned to sabotage and infiltration missions.

Operation: TORPEDO and degradation

On July 3rd, 2545, Owain and his fellow Beta company Spartans were sent to Pegasi Delta to destroy a Covenant Fuel refinery. Assigned as Team Echo Leader for the mission, Owain was one of the nine Spartans to drop out of communications upon landing after being diverted and crashing into a small Covenant Outpost, which left his team to assume he perished and continued with their objective. After surviving the engagement, it became apparent that due to the drop and firefight he had endured, his long-range comms system and geo-location beacon were some of the systems that were damaged. After commandeering a Covenant Ghost, he began heading towards the direction he believed the objective to be at but realized after a long while of driving that his integrated compass was also damaged and pointed towards the wrong direction. Seconds later after realizing this, he heard a loud explosion followed by a bright blue glow towards his right. Understanding that the mission was a success, he continued to travel until he could find a Covenant base. There, he snuck to the base’s plasma battery depo, where he placed remote-activation satchel charges. He then fought to the landing area used by Phantoms and Banshees. He killed a small patrol near a piloted phantom, used the gravity lift to board it, and killed the driver. As he flew the phantom out of the base, he detonated the satchel charges which destroyed the base and any pursuers. He was one of the last to arrive at the rendezvous point.

Upon landing his phantom near the rendezvous point, he had been informed that most of the Beta Spartan-IIIs, including the entirety of Team Echo and his bunkmate Min, perished in the operation. This sent Owain into a fit of rage as he'd bash his fists into the phantom's controls, and ripping out the components inside, completely deforming the control panel in his frustration. He felt that he had failed the many Spartans that he looked after since they began their training. His very outward and open behavior became more anti-social, where he’d speak only to marines and commanders when necessary for his objectives and would rarely interact with the surviving Beta SIIIs.

During a regular psychiatric evaluation, it was reported that this change stemmed from his innate feeling that he had failed as the protector and commander of his team and the other Beta-IIIs, and was unable to prevent their deaths, just as he had failed to protect the deaths of his family at the hands of the Covenant. Psychiatric evaluators were encouraged to utilize this trauma, and re-direct it as a potential source of motivation for his continued improvement as a Spartan operative. He decided to operate independently after TORPEDO, believing that he was unfit to look after anyone else and secretly feared to fail them again. Owain would be deployed in engagements that required a massive amount of firepower with his new MJOLNIR power armor.

Boarding Action

During a fleet engagement above New Luxemburg, the UNSC taskforce managed to disable a CCS-class cruiser. Owain was prepared for a boarding action inside the UNSC Tecumseh, a Stalwart-class frigate, along with three full squads of Orbital Drop Shock Troopers. When the Tecumseh flew above the covenant cruiser, it deployed its contingent of SOEIV pods, having the pods pierce and deploy the troopers inside. Owain's pod is the only one that did not attempt to deccelerate when approching the impact, managing to blow through multiple decks. While the ODSTs regrouped in the aft engine block to disable the cruiser's propulsion systems, Owain made his way to elimintate the bridge crew and prevent any sort of self-detonation sequence. Owain was succesful, besting the shipmaster assigned to the cruiser and its crew with his Assault rifle and M45 Shotgun.

The UNSC later secured the ship and transported all technologies recovered to the Office of Naval Intelligence.

Arcadia Sabotage

In October 11th 2551, Owain was deployed on a Lone-Wolf operation to a Covenant Hydro-processing center established in the ruins of Arcadia's ONI Xenoarchaeology base. Upon arriving, he encountered Team VENOM who informed him they'll be working together in this operation. Owain refused to cooperate and made his way to the refinery alone.

Owain managed to scout out the area and sent his information back to Command. Team VENOM used the information he recovered to link up with Owain while completing their own objectives of denying Covenant reinforcements from arriving.

Owain managed to reach the base adjacent to the processing plant. He discovered it was full of Plasma cores, fuel and methane and concluded that by detonating those stores, he could destroy both the base and the facility. Team VENOM, having just completed their objective, were made aware of his plan by Command and were told to withdraw from the area. Due to loosing their prior squad-leader to having to leave them behind, VENOM disagreed with his plan and made their way to rendezvous with Owain.

Team VENOM arrived just as Owain was planting the final satchel charge to a large methane refinery tower. Owain was angered at the fact that they'd ignore Command which alerted the local Covenant garrison. Owain moved to secure the Covenant Air field as VENOM followed behind as back up. They managed to secure a Covenant Lich and made their way out of the area. Owain detonated the Satchel charges, destroying the base and refinery.

When Command inquired on VENOM's defiance, Owain lied and stated he called them for back-up. But when VENOM approached him afterwards, he brushed them off, stating this was a one-time thing and that they should have left him there.

Invasion of Reach and Battle of Szurdok Ridge

Owain participated in the Fall of Reach on July 25th, 2552, and was officially deployed as part of VENOM Team. Where they were deployed into smaller engagements until August 12th, 2552 when deployed for the Battle of Szurdok Ridge

Elio-A182: "What is he doing?! He's insane!"
Hilda-A217: "Maybe, Eli. But we're spartans. Insane is what we do."
―Elio-A182 and Hilda-A217, discussing Owain's actions against a covenant Scarab

During the massive engagement, they were ordered to assist in taking down a scarab currently bearing down on a small UNSC mechanized force in Szurdok Ridge. However, the pelican carrying them was shot down by said Scarab and crashed in a cliff overlooking it. While the rest of VENOM slowly got their bearings, Owain quickly ran out of the wreakage and jumped off the ledge, using his right hand to grip the cliffwall and slow his descent. He managed to land onto the Scarab's left rear leg and climbed to the main chassis of the vehicle. He proceeded into the scarab and gunned down the crew before they could fight back.

"This is VENOM, we’ve captured a Scarab. I repeat, VENOM has captured the scarab and are moving against Covenant Heavy Armor."
―James-A341 communicating with the rest of the army about their change in plans

The rest of VENOM caught up when the scarab stopped attacking and would fight off Covenant attempting to recover the vehicle. They would then use the scarab to assist in the battle and to cut down one Covenant spires. Despite their best efforts, the UNSC ordered a full retreat after the UNSC Grafton was destroyed by the Covenant’s CSO-class supercarrier, Long Night of Solace. There were later reassigned to civilian evac ops across Reach.

Evacuation of New Alexandria

During the Siege of New Alexandria on August 19th,2552, he and his team would split up to better respond to the evacuation efforts. Despite it being what Owain had suggested and was a rational idea, Owain mainly suggested spliting as to operate independently from another team and avoid failing them again.

Owain-B176

After New Alexandria was evacuated, VENOM team was ordered to withdraw. The rest of the team boarded a Pelican which was shot down by Covenant shade turrets. Despite his initial reluctance to coordinate with his team, Owain commandeered a Covenant Wraith tank and after destroying the shades that shot them down, provided cover for them until the next pelican arrived, Owain continued to provide cover as their second Pelican departed and he stayed behind. He received a distress call from several UNSC marines, led by a Sergeant Graham, that were pinned down by the spaceport and were being sieged by Covenant armor. Using the stolen wraith, he fooled the Covenant into believing he was an allied Wraith sent to help, which he used to his advantage. He destroyed the enemy Wraiths and began targeting the Covenant infantry closing in the marines. He abandoned the heavily damaged wraith and defended the marines from more Covenant until the final pelican arrived to evacuate them all. Due to Owain having incurred many minor injuries during the evacuation, he collapsed inside the pelican. The surviving marines attempted to treat his injuries as best they could until they reached the airbase where medical personnel then took him away for a more thorough treatment of his multiple plasma burns and spiker grazes.

"Why the fuck did you stay behind?! We’re a team! We’ll fight together and, if need be, die together!"
―Elio-A182 to Owain, after returning from New Alexandria.

Owain was met by the rest of VENOM team at the UNSC airbase along with the medical crew. All three Spartans expressed their worry of having to have left Owain behind alone in the city. After he received a reminder from Elio and the other members, Owain slowly began opening to them.

Loosing everything again

They were later deployed on August 27th, 2552 at Anchor 9 Orbital Station, which was being boarded by Covenant forces. While the rest of VENOM focused on securing the reactor and command center, Owain assisted ODST forces engaging several Elite lances in the main hanger. Venom team later arrived to assist Owain in securing the hanger as more Phantoms arrived. Amid the chaos, Elio-A182 was crushed under a Hunter pair that dropped from a Phantom. While the other two members of VENOM fought one hunter, Owain would slowly approach the hunter responsible for Elio’s death and would lay a stream of continuous machine-gun fire as he approached it. When he got close enough, the hunter attempted to crush him with its shield, but Owain used his Machine gun to push it out of the way, and fired onto the hunter’s “head”, killing it off. This was the start of a small rampage as Owain would aggressively attack the remaining invaders, including an elite major that was shredded by Owain’s continuous and excessive fire of his machine gun, and an elite minor, that was killed when Owain threw the dead hunter’s shield to the elite, impaling him into the station’s bulkhead. Eventually, after the Covenant was driven off Anchor station, Spartan Owain had to be physically restrained by thirteen UNSC personnel and sedated to treat his many injuries.

Soon after sedating Owain, a CCS-class cruiser arrived and began bombarding the station, changing the mission from securing the station to evacuating the station. Venom team was successful in evacuating everyone in the last pelicans off the station and landed at the UNSC Morricone, a Marathon-class Heavy cruiser. The rest of team VENOM was to be redeployed to Aszod to assist in the departure of the UNSC Pillar of Autumn from dry-dock while Owain was to be brought to Earth for a different assignment. Despite feeling an obligation to remain, the surviving Spartans in VENOM team told him to evacuate, as he is still needed elsewhere. Owain could only assume that the remaining members of VENOM Team were left at Aszod, where the vast majority of Spartan-IIIs still alive on Reach by that time perished.

While on-route back to Earth, Owain went into another fit of rage in Morricone’s gym. Causing damage to several bulkheads, two blast doors, and injuring nine marines that attempted to restrain him until he was finally restrained by Cyclops mechs and sedated. Owain slowly reverted to his isolating self after the loss of his previous team. Due to the limited number of Spartans left now, Owain was claimed by the UNSC and would be deployed in solo missions against Insurrectionist activity rather than the Covenant.

Massacre at Leonis Mironis IV

Kurt-051: "Mendez and I always believed that you’d make a fine leader, Owain."
Owain-B176: "Sorry to have disappointed you, Sir."
―Kurt-051 and Owain-B176, after Kurt gave him his new mission on Leonis Mironis IV

On October 21st, 2552, Owain-B176 was deployed alone to the colony of Leonis Mironis VII. Initially sent to assist local UNSC forces that had been hard-pressed against Covenant raids, he’d be later deployed to neutralize insurrectionist activity at the destroyed colony of Leonis Mironis IV. He’d be deployed to the destroyed planet by a SOEIV and would begin a long walk to the location of insurrectionist activity.

Once he arrived at the objective, he found out that the insurrectionists had established themselves inside a UNSC Bunker and were equipped with Covenant technology, meaning that these insurrectionists made deals with Kig-yar pirates that held no permanent loyalty to the Covenant. Owain waited for night and then approached the bunker. He placed numerous remote detonation explosive charges on the weapon stockpiles they had to keep outside and entered the bunker. Once he entered the bunker, the doors sealed shut and he locked down the blast door controls with a UNSC override code to prevent them from re-opening the blast doors and escaping. The stockpiles were detonated once the blast doors were sealed. It was not until the next morning when Owain re-emerged from the bunker and after reaching a minimum safe distance, also destroyed the bunker from the inside by using the insurrectionist’s covenant explosives.

Owain Reach firing

Owain engaging Insurrectionists in city ruins outside the bunker

After the mission, psychological evaluations could only guess what happened inside the bunker, as Owain only stated he “completed his objective”, they guessed that Owain completed his task quickly and took the rest of the time to mourn since he had recently lost his latest squad and was back to his mostly glassed home planet, while another guess is that he took his time killing the insurrectionists inside the bunker, using the combat to relieve stress and anger. The only conclusive fact was that Owain did not actively mourn his last squad any longer, becoming much more apathetic. Owain would be recalled for the Battle for Earth after completing his mission but would arrive just after the planetary engagements concluded.

Hospital Admittance

After a hallucination on his way back to Earth resulted in seven injured navy personnel, two damaged bulkheads and a disabled blastdoor, Owain was declared to be a massive risk in his current state and admitted to Fajardo Post-Operations Treatment Center on Earth. Where he would begin treatment for his Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Psychosis.

Return to Reach

On April 9th 2554, Owain was discharged prematurely from Fajardo. Despite not being at peak condition, ONI decided to proceed with the discharge for an asset recovery op with a unique situation.

The New Alexandria Superindentent had come back online four days ago, the malfunctioning dumb AI was stuck in a datestamp set just before VENOM completed their evacuation efforts back in 2552 and it had taken control of city vehicles, using them to hunker down its data center under Olympic Tower

Equipped with his old Mjolnir armor, he was deployed past Vizegrad, where one of the planet's recolonization efforts were focused at.

After securing transportation in the form of a civilian spade, he travelled to the remains of the city, the main roads were heavily covered in rubble, limiting the locations he could travel with his vehicle. Upon reaching the city, he was contacted by the Superintendent, who recognized Owain as a friendly present during the Siege of New Alexandria, would continue to relay old combat updates from during the evacuation efforts.

Owain ignored the updates, much to the AI's distress. After he kept approching the data center's access point, the AI grew desperate and would begin sealing blastdoors in the city center's checkpoints. Ill-equipped to blast or hack the blastdoors open, he had to depend on the crumbling buildings with to make his way across the checkpoint, going through scattered jackal patrols on the way. After finally breaching the remains of the Olympic Tower on April 17th, the AI accused Owain of insubordination by ignoring his objectives for the evacuation efforts, authorized Lethal Force and reactivated M8 Wolf Spider turret emplacements. Owain engaged and eliminated the turrets then proceeded deep into the data center.

The AI continued to impede the spartan's progress, either by sealing blastdoors or deploying more Wolf Spiders but all attempts ended in failure. Owain began to notice that these Wolf Spiders had been repaired but not by the Superintendent, as it is incapable of precise individual repairs.

Owain reached the Data Center but the main door was already forced open, despite the AI stating that Owain would never get through the thick blastdoor. Much more wary than before, Owain readied his weapon and went inside. Clearing the data center slowly and methodically until reaching the main hub. There he would find Hilda-A217 and James-A341 still alive. Initially unsure if it was another delusion, Owain was hesitant to help his squadmates. James had lost his left leg and was using the superintendent's systems to find food and resources while Hilda would recover them.

Reunion

They explained how they survived the fight at Rally Point Omega after a radiation flare caused havok in the battlefield, they used the chance to regroup in a safer location with other spartans but by the time they reached their new location, only Hilda and James remained. They decided to lie low and avoid covenant patrols. When the Covenant finally departed the system, Hilda and James made their way to New Alexandria after hints that the underground bunkers were still intact.

When they arrived, they discovered the bunkers did not completely withstand the bombardment and subsequent radiation flares, but also discovered that the ration stores were still mostly intact and safe to consume. They spent another couple of days shifting from location until discovering the mostly secure, sterile and isolated Data center, which they could use as a permanent camp in which they would stockpile all their discovered rations. By the fifth day they were in the city, there were no more radiation flares prominent in New Alexandria and local regions, allowing them to safely search. Due to how severe the radiation flares were at Rally Point Omega, their communications systems were permanently damaged. It was only recently that they accidentally reactivated the superintendent while fusing together wires to restore the facility's heating system, prompting ONI to deploy recovery teams that either the malfunctioning AI did not recognize and would send away or they would be attacked by the scavenger groups.

Upon being notified of the survival of two spartans, The UNSC deployed the nearest ships they had available: Task Force Hestia. Prior the Task Force's arrival in-system, the Kig-Yar scavangers in the city contacted the rest on the opening of the city's technological center, which they had attempted to open before with little luck. Owain and Hilda had to engage the scavengers and repel them until Task Force Hestia arrived in-system.

Hilda-Owain Reach

Owain-B176 and Hilda-A217 engaging scavangers in the ruined remains of New Alexandria

Once the Task Force arrived on April 19th, the UNSC Puerto Rican Star deployed a single pelican but due to the heavy debris fields over the planet it would arrive to the spartans in fifteen minutes. James deactivated the superintendent, removed its entire data core then made his way up to the surface with a crutch he and Hilda had made while they were hiding. As Owain and Hilda managed to repel a wave of Skirmishers, the Medical Pelican arrived. The pelican landed in the courtyard with three medics and two ODSTs. The Medics helped James and Hilda get into the Pelican as Owain and the ODSTs would draw the enemy fire. They managed to extract all three spartans, along with the Superintendent's data core and returned to the hospital ship. Due to radiation exposure and James’ wounds, both Hilda and James were immediately quarantined in the hospital ship and later transferred to the Fajardo for extensive medical treatment.

Skills and equipment

Before Operation: TORPEDO, Owain was adept in the use of demolitions and specialized in Vehicle Operation, and would gain a knack for hit-and-runs, raids and sabotage while leading the minor secondary front during Operation: Halberd. After the disastrous operation, Owain’s combat style changed with his personality, he became well-versed in being the vanguard, being the bulwark between the enemy and his allies.

His MJOLNIR armor was modified to hold large amounts of ammunition for the M247H machine gun he would usually carry into engagements. He is also skilled in using MA37 Assault Rifles, SPNKR Rocket Launchers, and M45 Shotgun. Owain would also demonstrate an intricate understanding of Covenant's armored vehicles during the many occasions he captured them.

Personality:

“He was full of life back before TORPEDO, it’s as if he also died in that disaster.”

-Undisclosed Beta-III in Regular Psychiatric evaluations when asked about Owain-B176

Originally Owain was overprotective and kind, always looking out for his fellow trainees regardless of if they were sparring against each other seconds prior. His worry for his teammates was viewed by Kurt-051 as an asset rather than a liability. But after Operation: TORPEDO, Owain deteriorated to merely act as a lifeless wall. He would avoid unnecessary conversation and would avoid operating with other Spartans. Despite this appearing as disinterest to his spartan teammates, he was most afraid of forging new bonds only to lose them again. Something which happened before when his family and the cousins he looked after perished when he was young, and again when his new family in Beta company was mostly wiped out.  He devolved to a base instinct of engaging the enemy, with or without assistance. Almost as if he had nothing else to do but fight. Regardless of his deterioration, his feelings to protect others were demonstrated when acting as a vanguard for retreating UNSC forces, opting to risk his own life than to leave others to their fate.

Owain would avoid encounters with other Spartans during the war, even more so with Beta-IIIs that were pulled out of TORPEDO before the operation.  From regular psychiatric evaluation, ONI understood that Owain did not hate his fellow surviving Beta-III but that he feared being deployed with another team of Beta-IIIs. When he was forced into a new team for the Reach invasion, it proved detrimental to his psyche. Since he began to heal with them only to lose them all again missions later. After Reach, suicidal thoughts began to plague Owain. After the war, Owain would still avoid making a new team with Gamma company despite the UNSC’s best efforts to convince him otherwise. Owain would also look at the new Spartan-IVs as just better ODSTs, believing that they were still much more human than any Spartan-II or III ever created.
