History[]
After the first colonization in 2080, Olympus Mons became a source of wonder to all visiting humans due to its sheer size. As the population grew throughout the next few centuries, more and more people flocked to the 27 km high mountain. In 2196, Olympus Mons and a ten kilometer buffer zone around it were declared a national park. By the mid 2300s the planet had become stable enough that plant life grew rampant, and serious efforts were taken to control the encroaching wildlife.
Olympus Mons remained untouched throughout the duration of the Human-Covenant War.
Graviton Cannon[]
In 2570, the Covenant Loyalists managed to sneak on to Mars and began constructing a Graviton Cannon underneath the center of the crater. Phoenix and Badger Teams were sent in to destroy the cannon, but were forced to divert in order to defend Kennedy Space Port from a Covenant invasion. Hawk Team planted a homing device for a Kilroy Nuclear Bunker Buster and joined them. The cannon was destroyed, but most of Olympus Mons is now uninhabitable due to large amounts of radiation.
