May-G210, also known as Codename: ASTRAEA, was a SPARTAN-III Commando of Gamma Company. Conscripted after the devastation of her homeworld by the Covenant, she was placed into Team Shashka alongside her best friend Julian-G209 during training and soon became a capable young recruit who embraced her opportunity to become a supersoldier. After Gamma Company graduated in late 2552, she would end up fighting the Covenant for the first time during the Battle of Earth and survived multiple dangerous operations in the war's last few months, though Shashka's successes came at the cost of a teammate's life.
In 2554, their team was dissolved as she and her comrades were transferred to a new SPARTAN-III group: Shrike. The following year would see a multitude of increasingly difficult missions that took a toll on May's physical and mental health that culminated in the disastrous NOVA Incident and Shrike's eventual dissolution. She and Julian were both eventually moved into Fireteam Thor as part of the Spartan branch after showing signs of instability due to their altered augmentations and used as ONI's attack dogs against the toughest targets.
Early Life and Training
Skills and Abilities
Compared to many others within Gamma Company, May was a decidedly average Spartan who was never stood out for anything other than her fighting skills and her lack of a dedicated skillset meant that she was only considered truly effective as part of a larger team. In spite of this, she was considered to be extraordinarily intelligent even among her well-trained and eventually augmented peers and had a surprising knack for learning new languages. Following the Human-Covenant War's end, she was among several Spartans who took the opportunity to learn Covenant dialects, which would come in handy on long-ranging missions or if computer translation was unavailable.
Like most SPARTAN-III's, May had to cope with the psychological issues of coping with both the death of her family after the Covenant attacked Alluvion and a sudden adjustment to her rigorous SPARTAN-III training.
