Markko Kallas, known inside the Office of Naval Intelligence by his nickname "Boogeyman", is a former UNSC Marine Corps officer and ONI field commander with over three decades of military service against both Insurrectionists and the alien Covenant. A preceding reputation for ruthless lethality and occupational detachment, Kallas appears to be a reliable ONI field asset that few colleagues wish to work with.
Born in the Martian city of Gdynia to parents of Estonian descent, Kallas grew up in a military household with military values. However, unlike his parents, Kallas did not immediately take to military life and it was several years at the Mattis Academy of Military Science before he came into his own as a cadre squad leader on a UNSC Marine Corps officer track. He graduated with enough grade points to attempt ODST qualifications and passed, becoming a platoon leader in 2524. However, a deadly ambush on his first deployment, Jericho VII, turned his entire life upside down; rebels dropped artillery shells on Kallas’s vehicle convoy killing many of his subordinates. In need of immediate medical treatment, Kallas was removed from active service.
Much of Kallas’s body suffered injuries in the attack, including significant organ failure; however, the most significant damage was to his face, suffering contact with shrapnel. Due to improper muscle repair, Kallas would continue to live with significant nerve pain and partial facial paralysis. While options opened up to replace his damaged skin, Kallas chose to keep it against the better judgment of his doctors and family. Since the incident, Kallas retired from the Marines and joined the Office of Naval Intelligence as a military analyst and interrogation expert. His striking, inhuman visage is often associated with his shady work as a clandestine operations officer and hides his true intentions behind an enigmatic mask; the full extent of Kallas's true motives remain unknown to even his superiors.

From Mars’s Acheron Fossae archipelago, Markko Kallas is a former Marine Corps First Lieutenant and former ODST currently in the Office of Naval Intelligence’s employment. Caught in a rebel ambush on Jericho VII in 2524 before the Deployment Surge, Kallas’s squad took severe casualties and Kallas himself was severely injured leading into an early medical discharge from the Armed Forces. After sufficient recovery, ONI recruited him into their Section III department by 2526 to assist their investigation into the Covenant Empire’s military prowess. Kallas continues to serve ONI in a field commander capacity, leading clandestine operations against the more subtle foreign threats to the UEG’s national security apparatus.

Kallas has consecutively won the annual “Best-Dressed Individual Award” inside his department on two separate streaks: from 2549-2552 and 2556-2558.
A subdermal weave made of nanobots embedded into Kallas’s body reduces his chronic muscle pain caused by injuries from his first deployment to Jericho VII. The nanobots run from his upper body all the way to his face, numbing his nerving endings. In extreme circumstances, the machines are capable of reducing damage caused by severe burns.
An ongoing rumor persists at ONI that Kallas ordered the bombing of an orphanage to kill a family of Insurrectionists, however, there is no evidence of such an event occurring.
Kallas admits to being an avid fan of Baseball and Grifball. Due to his facial complexion, however, he has never been to a live game of either. He enjoys listening to sports commentary by the Grifball enthusiast, Doctor Nokyard.
