- "Sure, they're great for clearing obstacles, but you ever tried using one as a hand grenade? Now THAT is fun!"
- ―Staff Sergeant Obadiah 'Obbie' Forbes
The M394 Clearance Charge is a UNSC demolition charge designed for removing 'soft' obstacles, such as barbed wire, or similar objects.
The Charge is used to clear away enemy obstacles, such as barbed wire, concertina wire, razor wire and other similar defences. It can also be used to cause serious damage to enemy positions.
The Clearance Charge is made up of a number of prefabricated explosive charges, each one a plastic octagon stuffed with explosives and featuring corners made from high strength steel. The charges are half a foot long and be connected with more to create long charges. This allows the charge to be designed for the obstacle. When the explosive core is detonated, the metal corners form a explosively formed blade, cutting through the obstacle while the following explosion clears the obstacle. It can also be used as an improvised anti-personnel grenade, the blades slicing apart infantry with horrifying ease.
