The M247L machine gun is a Misriah Armory-designed light machine gun serving with the UNSC Army through every major conflict since the Insurrection. Operated in limited capacity compared to the more common M739 squad automatic weapon and M73 machine gun, the M247L fills a role of interchangeability derived from the in-service M247 series. The M247L shares parts compatibility with the M247H machine gun and M392 marksman rifle while chambered in the UNSC standard M118-type 7.62×51mm NATO round and features the shortest barrel option in the M247 family.

Like other members of the M247 series, the standard M247L is gas-operated and belt-fed from a detachable ammunition box. The M247L also allows for the use of side-fed magazines used by the MA5 series and other M118-chambered weapons in the UNSC arsenal. From a logistics perspective, the M247L is not a dedicated light machine gun as the M379 fills this role. Instead, the M247L is an administrative response approved by the UNSC Ordnance Commission to increase the modularity and availability for patrol and military police units on the frontline earning the nickname, "Riflemen's LMG."
