Before the M274 Mongoose entered service, the UNSC Army attempted to find a replacement for their own counterpart, the Wolverine light motorcycle. The result was the M226 Civet, a light ATV similar in most respects to the later Mongoose. It was designed for traversing rough terrain, and was certainly more capable of this role than the Mongoose, and had more capacity for supplies and other packages, but it was also slower, bulkier, and lacked the grip for a passenger. When the Mongoose entered service in 2525, the Army was quick to adopt the lighter, cheaper craft to cut costs. Some among the Army leadership have considered this a mistake, but the majority were sold as military surplus, entering civilian use.
