"I've seen some great and terrible things. Auroras—on six different worlds—and a Covenant glassing. A planet of endless forests and a planet covered in Flood infestation. It doesn't matter how much of the universe is terrible. Every little bit of greatness is worth fighting for."
― Kodiak-G114

Once, Kodiak-G114 had all the makings of a great team leader—brave, compassionate, and equipped with the refined training of Gamma Company, he'd overcome his fears of whether he was meant to be a Spartan and taken his place in command of Team Machete. But with the destruction of his team, his friends either dead, labeled traitors, or run away, his confidence was utterly shattered and doubts crippled his ability to lead. Rather than remain in Spartan Branch, ONI used the incident to transfer Kodiak under their control and place him in a team with other failed leaders from Gamma, where his strong build allowed him to fill the role of heavy weapons specialist. Though tormented by the loss of his friends and failure to protect them, Kodiak recognized his new comrades were also hurting and set aside his own pain for the good of the team, offering consolation and support as best he could.

Becoming a Spartan[]

Early Life and Conscription[]

Alec Jacques: "Dear, don't you think it's about time we told Kody the truth?"
Lili Jacques: "Of course not, five years old is far too young for that. Besides, his focus needs to be on schooling right now, and imagine the shock it would put him through."
Alec Jacques: "I know. I just worry he'll end up angry someday that we didn't tell him sooner."
— Kody overhears a conversation between his foster parents.

Kody Jacques was born Kody Allard, the child of New Harmonian colonists made refugees by the Human-Covenant War. Mistrustful of UEG colonial rule, Kaleb and Francesca Allard had lived off-grid on New Harmony until the Covenant's arrival forced them to barter their way onto an evacuation transport to Miridem. With no verifiable civilian identification, the Allards found getting work or other help which would let them escape the life of Miridem's overfull refugee camps worse than impossible. With Francesca more than seven months pregnant when they'd fled New Harmony, Kaleb accepted an offer from a Syndicate-affiliated gang out of desperation to aid in a burglary.

While the gang's official members stood back, Kaleb and a handful of other recruited refugees broke into the home of a Redbridge Police Department analyst to extort data on his department's anti-Syndicate operations. Unfortunately, the burglary spiraled out of control quickly after the analyst and his wife, Alec and Lili Jacques, were taken hostage. Unable to go through with the killings his conspirators threatened, Kaleb wounded the other burglars and helped to call police. Alec lied about Kaleb's part in the crime to protect him, and after some discussion invited Kaleb and his family to live in the Jacques' hastily-furnished garage as thanks despite his previous anti-refugee sentiments.

Though this vastly improved the Allards' situation, their time in poverty near starvation and the pregnancy took a hefty toll on Francesca. After giving birth to their son Kody, she passed away a scant few months later. Devastated, Alec one day left the household and disappeared, leaving their infant child behind. While they could have turned Kody over to colonial child services, the Jacques elected to adopt the boy and kept the painful story of his true parentage a secret until he was old enough to process it. While his first few years were fraught with illness, Kody displayed boundless energy and a healthy appetite to match.

Though his academic performance slowly caught up to that of his peers, Kody made few friends in school, preferring to spend time with his doting parents. Being so close with them, however, worsened the shock when, at five years old, he overheard Alec and Lili discussing whether to tell Kody the truth of his adoption. The revelation of so much he'd taken for granted being false shook the young Kody to his core, making him question who he was at a very young age. He became withdrawn, and though his parents noticed almost immediately, they wouldn't have the time to figure out what was troubling him.

In early 2544, the Covenant discovered human habitation on Miridem and tasked the Third Fleet of Glorious Consequence with cleansing the planet. While the real fight would take place between Navies above the planet, a Sangheili-led vanguard of ground troops was dispatched to the surface to take part in the first clash, as their honor-based traditions dictated. These forces landed, among other places, in Kody's home city of Redbridge before evacuation plans could even be set in motion. In school at the time, Kody was shepherded with the rest of his class to be taken away by bus, but slipped away from his overwhelmed teachers in an attempt to run home.

Deciding in that moment of crisis that the Jacques were his real parents, he feared for their lives and ran to try and find them. The blindly-made choice might have got him killed, had the Office of Naval Intelligence not tasked Staff Sergeant Pete Stacker with observing him. Through data gathered secretly by means of a free vaccination initiative, Kody's genetic profile had identified him as a candidate for the SPARTAN-III Program, and Stacker was tasked with assessing him. As soon as Kody ran away, Stacker gave chase, heading straight into the fighting between desperate police and militia groups and the first wave of Covenant.

"Don't... quit."
― Kody watches a Spartan fighting a Covenant Elite.

Blundering into a checkpoint under attack, Kody was thrown to the ground by an explosion and narrowly rescued by Stacker, if only for a moment. With the militia around them dead, Stacker attempted to fight off the Covenant troops closing in alone, when a SPARTAN-II in full armor came to their aid: Sheila-065. The Spartan routed the aliens almost singlehanded, inspiring awe in the terrified young Kody. With the pair momentarily safe, Sheila told Stacker to hurry ahead of her for the nearest evacuation site on his own, as she had already deviated from her priority of escorting Dr. Catherine Halsey to her own transport.

Stacker readily did so, but unfortunately their firefight had drawn the attention of Sangheili Major Thel 'Lodamee. As Stacker fled with the child hauled over his shoulder, Kody watched the ensuing fight and witnessed Sheila's death at the Major's hands. Aggrieved to see the woman who'd saved him cut down, Kody wept until much later, when Stacker had gotten him aboard an evacuation shuttle. Only then did Stacker reveal he'd been on Miridem to recruit orphans for the SPARTAN-III Program, and—as Kody was now such—encouraged him to volunteer, becoming a replacement for the Spartan they'd lost that day. Inspired by Sheila's heroism, Kody agreed.

Dyne-G217: "They won't just let her go after this, Kodiak, they'll lock her up and probably throw her to some spook's pet doctor as a rare specimen to poke at with new augment cocktails! No way she'll come back playing nice just to end up like that!"
Kodiak-G114: "I know! Isn't that still better than letting them kill her? We can visit her, maybe convince them to let her out in time. There's just... nothing we can do."
Dyne-G217: "Doesn't that just make it worse?"
— Kodiak and Dyne discuss Kody's new assignment.

Personality and Traits[]

Beginning with the revelation that the family he'd grown up with was not his own, Kodiak was defined by a need to figure out who he was and where he belonged in the universe. Witnessing Sheila-065's tenacity and sacrifice set a high bar for his expectations of what it meant to be a Spartan, and though the memory would motivate him to volunteer for the SPARTAN-III Program, it would also lead him to doubt whether he was worthy of replacing the person who'd died saving his life. Though he found a new family among the friends he made in Gamma Company, he was uncertain of himself as a leader, not helped by learning Stacker hadn't been able to complete his candidacy assessment before conscripting him because of the battle. Yet, this constant insecurity would give him a great deal of empathy and instill in him an unusual compassion for an indoctrinated Spartan, eventually allowing him to grow into the role of leading the close friends that made up his team.

This closeness, however, would leave him completely unprepared for his team to break apart, and all the confidence he'd worked up after so long was torn away. Left alone out of Machete's five members, he fell back on the ideals he associated with being a Spartan, but would be thrown into situations which forced him to question whether morality and his duty to the UNSC always aligned. Without the pressures of leadership, at least, he could grapple with these questions much more freely, and used the wisdom gained through reflection to act as a sort of counselor for the other Spartans with whom he served.

Weapons and Armor[]

Kodiak first dons his Mark V MJOLNIR armor.
  • Semi-Powered Infiltration Armor, Mark II
Undergoing a number of design upgrades after Alpha Company's destruction, the Mark II endured long enough to be issued to both Beta and Gamma Companies. Kodiak and the rest of Gamma spent the later years of their training learning to best make use of the SPI's stealth properties granted by its null-signature profile and surface layer of photoreactive texture paneling. While a third iteration was being developed, it never materialized, and Kodiak's team was deployed wearing the Mark II through the first days of the Battle of Earth.
  • MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armor, Mark V.1
The first sets of Mark V armor were introduced in November, 2551, but were swiftly replaced by a second version with perfected energy shielding and AI integration systems in August, 2552, and recalled to storage under Ryu Base in Tokyo to be scrapped for valuable materials. Here, they were discovered by Lieutenant Coney during the Battle of Japan and authorized for Ion Team's use. Assembling components to fit him from a dozen mismatched suits, Kodiak's armor incorporated a TACPAD and R-variant plates, but lacked a matching helmet, instead taking an Up-Armored CQC helmet. When he was eventually able to give the suit a consistent repaint, he chose to keep the white-and-blue color scheme it had originally worn as a way to honor the SPARTANs who'd fallen wearing it before him.
  • MA-series Assault Rifle
Misriah's premier line of automatic rifles was Kodiak's first choice of weapon, excelling in close quarters while versatile enough for him to adapt to unexpected situations. Especially favoring the high-capacity B Model, he kept a modification kit including underslung shotguns, M301 grenade launchers, and several different caliber barrels for shredder, armor-piercing, and other types of special ammunition.
Kodiak's gauntlet knife.
  • Knives
Kodiak was famous for his collection of military and civilian knives, which he used as utility tools, bayonets, and simply in close combat. Aside from a variety of UNSC standard-issue multipurpose knives, in his possession were a kukri recovered from Reach, a Jiralhanae kris, and a gifted Sangheili curveblade. A number of throwing knives were stashed in compartments in his armor, which could be spring-loaded for easy access. These included a gauntlet knife that retracted under the knuckle plate, a unique customization designed by Kodiak and Vinh.
