The Impediments of the Path was a title given by Sangheili Shipmasters to a group of high-ranking human individuals during the Human-Covenant War. Numbering no more than seven, these few were those whose courage, skill and honour in battle warranted respect and even fear from their species as a whole during the war.

Named after the legendary "Seven Impediments of the Path" prophesied in their faith, in which during the Final Age of Reclamation before the Covenant would embark on the Great Journey, they would be faced seven major obstacles, seven impediments with which to test their faith and worthiness to go on the Great Journey. As the Great War raged, the Covenant encountered human commanders who stood above and beyond their peers. The more superstitious of their warriors believed them, along with the Demons, to be the Seven Impediments foretold by their dogma.

These individuals, known as the Impediments, as they were collectively called, often known via various epitaphs attributed to them by Sangheili commanders, others were known by name. Reduced to merely a hit-list by warriors who were not Sangheili, the skill with which they led their fleets or armies dealt the Covenant stinging defeats and each one was responsible for the loss of tens of thousands of warriors, which marked them has high-priority targets for destruction or assassination by the Prophets. The latter option was refused several times by Sangheili.

The death of any one of these Impediments was marked as a great occasion by the Covenant and resulted in their slayer, their legions and even their ships receiving incredible recognition and glory from the rest of the Covenant for their accomplishment, which was then followed by a period of mourning observed by fasting and prayer by those who held particular reverence for them.

Discounting Demons who were kept within their own equally-respected group, only seven people are counted as being apart of this elite force. Following the Great War, there are only two Impediments who are confirmed to be alive, both of whom would become part of the Magnificent Five.
