#I suppose it's my <s>fault</s> credit that all these good battles have been sic'd on the site this year because of that Weekly, but honestly? My take here is the same as the one there - you'd hope so, after I spent a cumulative 3,100 words reviewing the three candidates here. All of them are very strong, even with their vastly different scopes - but IMO, ''Siege of Sirona'' lands at the top of them, with strong competition also coming from the CTSB case. It edges out over Grannus by still keeping sharp and punchy and to-the-point while switching from strategic to tactical scales in the ground battle; and while it's integrated into your other works (particularly the Jabber and Sirona as a world itself) it stands more freely of them than ''Asphodel Meadows'' does. The Sironan ''mythos(?)'' as a whole is steadily growing, but quality and ''variety'' of each aspect (a battle article, a short story, a vehicle and a conlang to top it off!) keeps it nicely fresh and accessible.

Welcome one and all to the Thirteenth Annual Halo Fanon Wikia Awards for 2020. We are honoured by your attendance to this annual community awards ceremony and celebration, the thirteenth and certainly not the last of its kind. This project is coordinated by the Halo Fanon Wiki Administration, and would not be possible without the hard work of our community this year.

We look forward to your participation in this community-wide celebration, and hope that you will all participate! Now, read the regulations, nominate your favourite articles, and vote!


Regulations

  1. Nominations begin at around 12:00 AM midnight UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) on December 1st, 2020 and voting begins at the same time on December 15th. It will conclude promptly around 12:00 AM midnight UTC on December 31st, 2020! Any exceptions to this are listed below. Final winners will be announced and receive their awards on January 1st, 2021!
  2. Voting Qualifications: Users eligible to nominate and vote must have been users for at least four weeks and have sixty or more mainspace edits in order to vote. Because of the style of this ceremony, sockpuppets and sock masters are not invited, and will be promptly banned from the Wiki and barred from future voting. Newer users who spam edits just to gain the required amount to participate will also be barred from voting.
  3. Nominations:
    1. You may only nominate articles for a category so long as it expressly fits the definition of each category. Nominations that are not eligible for a category will be deleted or moved to the appropriate category by the administration. You may request a clarification about the definition of any category from Brodie-001. You may not nominate an article for more than one category, with the exception of Best Canon Expansion and Best Concept. Articles that are not eligible for nomination will be removed without any notice if they are found to have "content issues" ("Unrealistic", "Non-Canon Friendly", etc.)
    2. You may nominate an unlimited number of articles written by any number of other authors for any number of categories. However, you are restricted to nominating only one of your articles for only one category for the whole ceremony. This is to promote professional sportsmanship. For categories pertaining to users ("Best Writer of the Year", "Breakthrough User of the Year"), you may not nominate yourself.
    3. "Recycled" articles will not be accepted into the nomination process. An article that has received minor or no edits for the duration of the year is not eligible for the event. Every article's edit history will be checked when nominated, and will remain valid for nomination only if it has received moderate to major changes/improvements throughout the year.
    4. You must nominate articles according to the proper format (listed below). Fill out all the fields when submitting a nomination, and post the completed nomination form underneath the category that you're nominating the article in question for.
    5. Perceived breaches of good conduct and professional sportsmanship will be prosecuted by the administration to maintain the dignity of this voting system.
    6. The author of an article reserves the right to withdraw his or her own article from a nomination at any time, with or without given reasons. However, if a user has nominated an article that is not their own, they may not withdraw it.
    7. Eligible categories are decided in advance by the administration. If you have a suggestion for the addition or removal of a category, please discuss it with one of the administrators.
    8. Winning articles of the previous annual awards may be nominated only if it's been improved upon drastically after receiving a previous award, for a maximum of three awards in separate years. This applies only to the articles, not the authors of the articles, who may only win the Best Writer or Breakthrough User award once. This does not mean that the article can only win three awards; for example, if an article can be nominated for the Best Canon Expansion category, along with its own category, and wins in the top three awards of the year, and does so for three separate years, the article in question can theoretically win nine awards in total (this is, however, highly unlikely).
  4. You may always contest in a category even if you won an article in that same category before with a different article.
  5. Voting:
    1. Eligible users may vote for a maximum of two articles in a given category. You may vote for only one of your own articles for the entire ceremony, no matter how many articles you have in how many categories. You may not vote for yourself under a user category.
    2. Please sign your vote with a non-bubble text signature (~~~~) to verify your identity.
    3. You do not have to vote for an article you nominated.
    4. The process has two stages: nomination and voting. Users may nominate articles for the Annual Awards from December 1st, 2020 to December 15th, 2020, in order to fill out the categories with prospective AA winners. Then, from the 15th to the 30th, voting will take place across all categories.
    5. Winners of the Heroic, Legendary and Mythic Articles of the year will be decided between December 30th, 2020, and January 1st, 2021.
    6. Any categories with ties by 12:00 AM UTC on December 30th, 2020 (24 hours before the end of the vote) will be remitted from public voting and will enter private administrative ballot to decide ties. The results of the ballot will be announced afterwards. All administrators with a registered email will have twenty-four hours to decide ties.
  6. Winning:
    1. The article for the most votes in a given category will be formally acknowledged as the winner for the category, and the article and its author will be commended by an official award granted by the administration approximately by January 1st, 2021 and the end of the ceremony. Category-winning articles will be eligible for winning the Heroic, Legendary or Mythic Article of the Year awards once voting is over.
    2. In the event of a tie, a tiebreaker will be performed, and the winner will be decided by private administrative ballot. The ballot's content will be disclosed at the end of the ceremony.
    3. If an article is the only nomination in its category and receives fewer than three votes, it will be combined with another similar category after the voting process to avoid "winning by default", and votes will be counted accordingly.
    4. Only one article may win each award in the placement category. In the event of a tie at this stage, a private ballot will be held by the Administration to determine the winner. This has been done due to several years of two or more articles winning a major award due to ties.

Characters

  • Best SPARTAN of the Year — Any character enrolled in any SPARTAN program.
  • Best UNSC Personnel of the Year — Any character associated with the UNSC Marine Corps/Navy/Army/Air Force or any of its subordinate commands. Does not include SPARTANs.
  • Best Covenant Character of the Year — Any character belonging to one of the former member races of the Covenant (Unggoy, Sangheili, Jiralhanae, Kig-Yar, San'Shyuum, Yanme'e, Lekgolo).
  • Best Third-Party Faction Character — Any character who is affiliated with a non-UNSC or non-Covenant organization; includes, but is not limited to: AI, Insurrectionists, organized criminals, Forerunners, Precursors, etc.

Technologies

  • Best Vehicle of the Year — Any classification of vehicle or individual vehicle capable of spaceflight, extra-atmospheric, or ground travel.

  • Best Organization of the Year — Any organization, including, but not limited to, governments, militaries, military subdivisions, units, civilian corporations, etc...

Stories

  • Best Novel of the Year — Best long literary fiction. A nominated novel does not have to be completed but substantial progress should have been made. There is a general minimum length threshold for novels to be considered. Does not include roleplays.
  • Best Short Fiction of the Year — Best short literary fiction. Short fictions can be nominated in groups or collections. It is recommended that the nominated fiction is completed.

Users

  • Best Writer of the Year — For literary excellence in writing articles, fictions, roleplays, and/or productions.
  • Breakthrough User of the Year — For newfound outstanding participation and contribution on the wiki and friendly interaction with the community.

Miscellaneous

  • Best Concept of the Year — A sort of 'other' category for quality articles that do not fit into any other category or are not seen enough on the site to warrant their own section; species, games etc.
  • Best Canon Expansion of the Year — A well-written article based off a canon element or article that has strong connections to canon as well as the author's own creativity.
  • Best Collaboration of the Year — Any singular collaborative work, including but not limited to, roleplays, expanded universe, alternate universe, or other type of article written by two or more people that does not qualify for any of the above categories.

Placement

  • Heroic Article of the Year — The article with the third most number of votes in the "placement" stage.
  • Legendary Article of the Year — The article with the second most number of votes in the "placement" stage.
  • Mythic Article of the Year — The article with the most number of votes in the "placement" stage.

  1. Sniper has been putting in work to bring up Amber. She's included in a number of personal and site writing projects. There's a healthy mix of site lore and canon work to easily make this one of the most enjoyable Spartans to read on site. I also find it to be one of the best written articles on the site.   2. Ah yes, this... bitch? Merlin would certainly agree with me, despite being my OC or not. Amber has earned a decent reputation as Fanon's second 'evil' Gamma in the last few years through contributions to Amber by dedicated friends to Sniper while he had other life circumstances to get a brace on. Still, Sniper's been able to comeback and drop the edit or two or many in these last months of 2020 to really get the ball rolling for her again. She's been put up for the AAs several years in a row but always shuffling in the background - that circumstance may remain the case with this year's strong competition. But for me, Amber has always been a striking character and living-breathing one in a way that is complicated and tangible, told through short stories, novels, and roleplay despite often just being the snarky henchwoman of sorts. As the Created rise in the galaxy, now she has a chance towards the spotlight. I think on her history, the challenges and the hardships she's had to face that no other Spartan really has - especially being a daughter that ultimately can't be remembered by a mother as even wanted and living with a cursed shadow set before her that she could never had set herself up for. Some outside our community if exposed to Amber would probably write her off as a Mary Sue or another edgelord Gamma, but she's fundamentally more than that. Given Ilsa Zane's reputation in the lore and community as a whole, I don't think outsiders won't mind ignoring Amber's existence and merits. But for our community, she represents something far more. She has one of my votes for this year. I really do hope she gets the victory of Best Spartan that Amber has been put forward for but lost on multiple occasions on.   3. The fact that I have to pick between Sam and Amber is nothing short of criminal, but rather than than raid the site with police, I'm going to vote for them both. Amber is nothing short of a joy to read, and I can plainly see the amount of work Sniper has put into her over the course of the year. She is so well written as a character that I even use her as a benchmark to build my own characters like Bodark. Just an overall fantastic article, a wonderful and really likeable character which really does deserve to be named Best Spartan in the coming days. User:EvenManatee887

A monolith of an article, Bodark is a troubled Spartan and a well-rounded character, troubled but still loyal to the UNSC and hardened by years of suffering and fighting.   1. I decided that the two Spartans that I favored the most were Pete's Samuel-B256 and LBK's Johan Helnwein. After a large hiatus in 2019, Low came back this year swinging with a new Spartan. I personally think that Johan is a vast improvement from Low's former Spartan, Blake Karmyn. I feel like Johan's gone a bit under the radar this year, which is a shame, but that doesn't influence my vote for him at all. UnggoyZealot

  1. Every year, there are articles that end up catching me by surprise, and this year it was Annalee. It hasn't had the most expansion of this year's nominees, but the personal story the biography tells caught my attention most. The character's born in the 22nd century, which is normally a weird enough inclusion for me to write something off, but KL's done it with specific intention and made use of other articles he's put well-spent effort towards to explain the how and why of the character's odyssey from last cryo-frozen survivor of a pre-slipspace colony ship to Spartan candidate. If the next phase of the article is going to use KL's Diamond Initiative to the same effect as the Early Life involved aspects of the Enzmann-type Starships, I look forward to reading on. Samuel-B256 (TPF) (ThePeteFiles)

  1. This year's a tough field to narrow down for the Spartan category. Multiple characters whose authors might consider them their flagship articles, more than one that's undergone significant rewrites in the year, and all with pretty hefty amounts of content. Of the list, however, I think I have to throw my vote behind Samuel for checking the most boxes as far as all the considerations I took. It's got a well-fleshed-out character biography, the story it tells has some personal stakes in addition to the retelling of operations, it's had significant addition to its byte length this year (and that's even with a hefty cut of content from TPF to prepare for Infinite), had edits throughout the year, and his Traits/Equipment/Relationships sections are built up. Every article up for Spartan this year hits at least half those boxes, but Samuel was the one that seemed most well-rounded to me when accounting for them all. In particular, I like the use of a Relationships section; it's not all too common anymore, but articles that inspired me like Riker-012 back in the day had them, and it makes for an easy, concise way of mapping out the character's relationship to others, potentially including those of other writers in the future.   3. I have a lot of good things to say about the Spartans in competition this year, keeping an eye on many and their development progress through 2020 and before. Amber is a sad familiar face, one that keeps getting nominated but unrecognized. Bodark is certainly one I would describe as 'most improved' in a way that makes her a real challenger for more established Spartans in this list. Johan, surprised to see a complete rewrite for him but the new additions are unique. Annalee is very much 'most unique' in terms of origin for any Spartan OC I've ever seen. Joseph is the iceberg tip to a grander and more ambitious Spartan tale than any that has been pursued by any writer on the site I think, with the gritty consistency proven to make it work. Riz is a surprise but an excellent one from a total black sheep in this community - still don't think Underlord has made a formal introduction to the community now that I think on it. I have no nice things to say on Andra. But despite all that, I have to give my vote to Samuel for being the 'most complete' and 'most polished' after watching Pete put him through multiple iterations of Good Article applications and driving forward with rewrite after rewrite for Sam and to be honest, many of his accomplices. I've seen a growing number of newer users that have come through since 2019 also looking to Sam as a example on how to write Spartan articles and I think if there ever was a litmus test for Best Spartan, it would be that.   4. Best Spartan is always one of the toughest categories to vote for, though I feel that Samuel edges out the competition this year. Taking into account the constant efforts Pete has put in to update and improve the page, which has done wonders for the article's quality, it stands out among the other nominees.   5. The fact that I have to pick between Sam and Amber is nothing short of criminal, but rather than than raid the site with police, I'm going to vote for them both. Sammy, Sam, Sam, probably one of the first clear examples to me of just how intense voting for Best Spartan can get. I saw, I think it was Cody, manage to edge you out last year and I remember saying that the next year would be your chance, and it seems like I may be some level of oracle, because here we are. Samuel has been one the best examples of just how much time, effort and dedication that Pete puts into her characters, the level of detail, the repeated discussions about details of training, skills and deployments. Its just been a phenomenal effort by Pete and, just like Amber, I feel Samuel is well deserving of his shot at winning Best Spartan. User:EvenManatee887

  1. The meme, the myth, the legend, Andra Ivory Darkness Kearsage Onegin -D054, Tide's preeminent Spartan thanks to all the site stories mentioning her this year. Usually regarded hand in hand with her compatriot Merlin, this year Tide has made strides to distinguish the two from one another, in no small part due to the aforementioned stories. Undergoing a complete rewrite over the course of the year, Tide built his Delta Spartan from the ashes and forged a very well crafted character article from it, and has earned my vote, spider free --LOMI Speaketh 02:24, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

  2. LHF has done some neat work here cross-expanding his own Army Airborne expansion article through Emma, down to detailing the Airborne's training program week-to-week. When I see a tech article or similar that has precise numbers in every available slot, what I'm really hoping for is something like this, where the tech/organization/other background lore informs the character and their history.   3. LHF always brings solid storytelling to bear with his projects, Emma is no exception and is the visual basis for some of the most prolific expansion on the UNSC Army in some years on Halo Fanon. She was increasingly an inspiration for some of the realizations I had for Viktoria Bradford in my own right and as Pete has noted, the history for Emma is indeed varied and touches a wide variety of integrated lore for the Halo franchise and Halo Fanon creations. One thing my fellow voters have yet to discuss is the visual presentation however, I think Emma has some of the most visually consistent but also increasingly dynamic accompanying material for the article and its nice seeing a variety that's also non-traditional from the bygone era of simply pulling screenshots out of Halo Reach. Emma Sówka is without a doubt a culmination of a site veteran's contributions polished to a fine shine. I don't just consider Emma as a AA worthy hopeful, I think she may have my vote for the final three AA awards if she manages to make it there - I certainly believe the character and LHF deserve it, for effort and circumstance alike. Even so, I have to hand it to Delta Pistol's Daniel Conteras and my own Viktoria Bradford, that even if well-polished and solidly written, Emma has a level of completionism that just can't be matched at this time.   4. Just a well rounded article on top of expanding in areas that always needs some more expanding. To repeat what I said in this years FOTM: I think it's an example of what a really well laid out character sheet/history can look like with enough work. I'm always a fan of filling in the blanks, and Emma fills some interesting speculative points, and I particularly am interested in LHF's Pathfinder premise. I think this sort of expansion pairs with a well cared for character article. Also, something I always appreciate in a fanon article, is the mixture of different media among the article itself — and especially when the mixture works, creating a lot of different glances at the story while still feeling related. Though it's only been around for less than a year, this is a great UNSC personnel article, and one I think deserves a nod for the work LHF has put into it. User:Kobold Lich

Though I was unfamiliar with this character until recently, I greatly enjoyed going through Emma's page; LHF has done a fine job in telling an informative and compelling narrative via the biography section, making it a good read.   1. Despite my reservations on picking between the work of UnggoyZealot and Ado 'Ulamee as solid Covenant writers, I tried to encourage competition in a low year for alien characters on Halo Fanon. With a notably lower quality and underdeveloped work, I decided to throw my vote into account of uniqueness over pure quality. UZ's Kelvaaro 'Shrykaree is a stellar, continuing example of his pension for quality and standards on Halo Fanon but still is undercooked by his own measure in the past year. A Sangheili who found their way into the Banished is certainly a unique and praise-worthy addition to the long cast of Halo Fanon legends, but I've decided to give my vote to the imperfect but unique character space that is Zil - a newcomer and era tourist for Halo Fanon due to existing almost as if on a composition island and existing rather in ancient times of the Halo series. It's a unique time frame and a unique cultural period that Halo Fanon doesn't nearly have enough of. I want to see and encourage more of that. Zil still needs many of the basic polish founded on Halo Fanon articles like attention-grabbing images and a clean up of spelling and grammar, but there is a diamond in the rough here that I think deserves my vote. It might be that I helped polish Ado's Journey of our Time short novel this year but I'm certainly intrigued by the future that Zil may represents: I would love to see more ancient Halo cultures. Diving into the unusual restrictions of Sangheili honor-bound society and the challenges in overcoming them breaks us out of the military sci-fi mold, and while both articles up this year take full advantage of that, I think UZ's comes closer to the balance between specific detail and overview of events I like to see in an article. I am admittingly responsible for trying to fill the Third-Party space this year due to a large lack of appropriate characters to fill the role, even after Zoey Hunsinger and Lydia Gott were dashed hopefuls after their writers were unable to contribute more work into getting them up to snuff (Yes, I referenced my own article - sue me.). Despite all that, instead we have a trifecta of UNSC Smart AIs to examine this year instead. I'm throwing my vote behind Yuki due to careful examination of the contenders and no interest in giving my own dear Althea a self-vote. Freyja is a solidly written AI article but one I would describe as "safe" in the context of being the traditional role of 'Smart AI partnered with Spartan to go kill things' model we've seen time after time. It's solidly written, lacks any grammar issues, but it is short and I also have a bit of a disagreement on the portrayal of events in Freyja's depiction. Yuki for me is more unique as a medical administration AI and one that treads the line between military and civilian service. On top of the amount of time I spent collaborating and getting to know the newcomer Navi and his interest in giving Puerto Rico a glow up for the twenty-sixth century, seeing Yuki and getting to experience Navi's imagination and in-jokes make me very inclined to to vote for this character. Yes, it's a neko-girl character, for some that's an inhibition, for others that's a plus. I make no remarks on the matter. I think Yuki maybe among the few or even the first of the Halo Fanon AI articles to outright, in writing, establish an allegiance to the Created, despite the character's motivations to do so are less than aligned with the Created agenda. Coersion is a manner of recruitment too, despite being a negatively-inclined tactic. For that reason and the unique profile of the character overall, I've looked beyond some grammar and lack of polish and I have given it my vote. Then I realized I didn't have to choose just one. The Pangolin makes sense enough as a concept--armored Warthogs to protect occupants from IEDs and small arms fire you might expect the Insurrection to have. But the Development History here in particular really engaged me. The small catches that call for entire redesigns are really neat, and reminded me of how I went about the Chancer V's production history. On merit of articles, I have finally settled on the M874 Troop Hog as my Best Vehicle vote despite knowing that the standard upheld with the Jabber would be an easy winner in another annual awards competition. The Svalinn too actually is an excellent article, despite being lackluster in the face of what I can honestly describe as 'borderline-obsessive' with Even's expansion on the Warthog. This article really isn't just an expansion on the Troop Hog, but research into the Warthog in all its parts and form. Even's done incredible work, very clearly displaying the amount of research that went into the vehicle. As an aside, however, I will say in the future, I expect more relevancy for the Svalinn and particularly the Jabber due to how technical manuals translate into story. Despite the Pangolin, and the occasional reference as such, I suspect using the phrase of 'Pangolin' or 'M874 uparmored Troop Hog' may become the end-all for its appearances in stories in the future. Despite myself knowing that my writing proximity to Sirona and its events personally, I will be seeing the Jabber more than the M874 in my works in the near future. Still, I can help but want to integrate M874 into my stories at some point - it really is that good and really deserves the spotlight. Like the Pangolin, the Jabber caught me out of my usual sleeping on tech articles with the Development History, setting itself up as a local product of the already well-expanded-on Sirona. The obstacles its development hits and overcomes are a fun read, and while I think it could acquire a bit more personal touch by introducing individuals involved in the development, it then goes on to outline a fantastic little battle where just one of these tanks deprived of support is the tip of the spear in holding off a superior Covenant force. What's more, it reaches out for collaboration by including Pangolins in that battle. Now to wait and see when Misriah tries to force a hostile takeover of the manufacturer. Halo Infinite's armor reveal this month got a lot of fans going in one direction, and the port over of the Halo Online's armor to MCC in the other direction. Halo Fanon is not safe or unique from that tapped fan frequency and after ENTERPRISE came out ahead last year, I'm glad to see Even took some of the well-fought advice and extrapolations to make another attempt at the Annual Awards once more. Without a doubt, it has the content and clear ideas that put it ahead of this year's competitors in both weight and depth - I don't think it's a doubt on what is the best technology in 2020. At least to me, I say it's COSSACK. Having personally helped among many others in shaping it's improvements and refinements through reader feedback. Though the stand out feature is the helmet, the article is what we're judging here. From pictures, exhaustive description, and sci-fi mumbo jumbo: this article touches on it all. I think with some more pictures focusing on different things such as gauntlets and sabatons might bring this together a bit better in the visual aspect, but it's knocked it out of the park with the writing. Reading over Brandon's article, I found myself oddly enjoying it. The idea of rebel armor to counter spartans is not new, but this is the first time I have seen where the armor is not met to alter the user, and I like that. The KSM1 Jabber plays a significant role, and three new short stories have joined the more than half-dozen pre-existing.   2. I suppose it's my fault credit that all these good battles have been sic'd on the site this year because of that Weekly, but honestly? My take here is the same as the one there - you'd hope so, after I spent a cumulative 3,100 words reviewing the three candidates here. All of them are very strong, even with their vastly different scopes - but IMO, Siege of Sirona lands at the top of them, with strong competition also coming from the CTSB case. It edges out over Grannus by still keeping sharp and punchy and to-the-point while switching from strategic to tactical scales in the ground battle; and while it's integrated into your other works (particularly the Jabber and Sirona as a world itself) it stands more freely of them than Asphodel Meadows does. The Sironan mythos(?) as a whole is steadily growing, but quality and variety of each aspect (a battle article, a short story, a vehicle and a conlang to top it off!) keeps it nicely fresh and accessible.

  1. There are several solidly written event articles in 2020, and much thanks to LegendOfElTopo for promoting such a showdown earlier in the year with his Weekly challenge to make such an article. I've chosen Battle of Grannus as my article of choice in this line up because of the extensive detail that was put forth in the article about the battle and my honest preference for its visual appeal in its order-of-battle and battle timeline sections. I will have to remark that the article's contents feel choppy due to overabundance of detail and not enough details in others, however, I also feel that the article approaches the most sense of completeness while also having a greater wealth of detail than say my own Asphodel Meadows Raid which covers a much smaller event with even less detail. The Siege of Sirona is another great article that comes a close second for me, however, I feel that Grannus inches out ahead because the main beef of the article, the history of events within the two battles is more written out than in Sirona, though I do note that Sirona seems to be more complete in other aspects like its timeline section. The black sheep of the event articles, Colonial transportation... is actually another well-written article with a very unique appeal and clear depth of research on display but much to its own demise due to overuse of technical terms and acronyms and a somewhat unbalanced grammar quality that requires some improvement. All the event articles have their shining marks in my eyes, but for the nature of competition - I'm going with the Battle of Grannus. - Distant Tide: Hunter - Killer

Despite that, what Installation 06 does right is in its polish, keeping to history beyond the current wartime era with the Created so that it can exist in its own bubble, and still managing to add notes like flora and fauna to keep it unique. The meat of Installation 06 is its recount of contemporary events in the Hal universe followed by a big enough brief that could provide the basis for a future story or a roleplay. Even though Underlord remains an enigma in the Halo Fanon community, he was among a few standout showings from our new site contributors. This article came outta nowhere for me, as I was vaguely aware of some collaboration between Distant and someone I'd only heard of through the Discord, so I was quite surprised to find a fully-expanded history had been written completely below my radar. And I enjoyed reading through, particularly seeing how you handled the 21st century; typically, with articles that bridge the present to Halo's far future, we have a blank header if anything at all, but Puerto Rico's article handily incorporates canon detail with enough vagueness concerning dates and events to get the point across without stepping under the Damocles sword of either future canon or future real world events rendering it NCF (I suppose we have to accept history up through current year as canon in Halo, don't we?). What's more, it includes links to other pages expanding the same subject.   1. One thought that'd occurred to me about the whole Created Crisis' uncertainty was how the UEG might try to reestablish itself after, and whether it'd actually be able to. And what would that mean if it didn't? We end up with a far more fantasy-feeling galaxy with several competing human powers, rather than a singular Earth-based government? Well, lo and behold, Distant's beaten me to it again with a full article about just such a post-UEG state. Balkanized is the word used to describe the galaxy herein, and that's exactly what I think we should expect to see in Halo's future (even if the games want to insist on the UNSC continuing for brand recognition).   2. As time goes on, oh how the fissure between the prime canon and Safe Havens grows. Despite that, Lancer has only continued to bolster and expand on his vision for a post-Covenant War world that fits within the time period it was created, and even more hunkers back to a time period that is almost proto-Halo in the like - both within universe, and real life. Space Marines, space Vietnam, government conspiracies. It's distinctly a Halo EU fixture if there ever was one - a very possible reality had Cortana not stepped into the limelight and out from perpetual death. The UNSC, ONI got too big, became a monster that its citizens could no longer stand. And then someone within comes calling out, time to reset everything. The author's been exhaustively thorough in formatting the article as an in-universe report, from indexes to external links to reference documents. I kept thinking as I read through that I'd find hints at a conspiracy of some kind, but if they're there I think I missed them. Lacking that, I can only read the article as a cautionary tale of small failures at every level contributing to the sum of a massive, preventable disaster. That's a satisfactory takeaway in my book.   5. I guess there just wasn't enough room for two language articles this year - Skandien by Darthnicky was unable to keep up with Sironana by Timothy Emeigh. I think what made Sironan more popular was how it approached pronunciation and craft structure. There is a distinct purpose and construction to Sironan that Skandien does not address due to greater focus on the language history.   2. I could be wrong, but I think it's been literally 10 years since a music article was even in the AAs, the last I know of being Human Nature. In-universe media articles are few and far between, but as I found out when writing a short story just this month, sometimes it's really handy to have something on-hand to provide you with a whole fleshed out genre or media piece you can point to and say "this is what my character's into" or "this is what the venue happens to be playing". Blam! sets itself up perfectly for this need as an entire genre, leaving a writer who might borrow it free to determine the type of song to fit a story's mood.   3. Being a composer myself I couldn't help but be drawn to an article related to music. Music has evolved in the Halo Universe that not only is there Halopedia's Flip music, and Jawsredfield's Human Nature, but now Tides work of Blam! music. The sub genres are well thought out and complement the main genre nicely, with the popular examples adding a touch of humor and trivia. I've probably said this in my GA votes for the article, but I think one of the top things in this article's favor is what it does with the specific canon events we know about the character (something which, unfortunately, I feel holds its contenders back as their canon counterparts have little known, currently). Falkeno's taken the defining moments from canon relating to Joseph and turned them into a character, looking at his perspective on known events. I hoped for a reconcile with Daisy while reading, and as much as I did, having him never get that before Daisy's gone can lend quite a bit for the character to reflect on. Good on you. Past that fear, there is an excellently put-together article about a canonical Spartan with just a few lines to his name. Joseph-122 evolved under Falkeno's care from a one-note Spartan in a back drop to a centerpiece character with highs and lows; a lot of lows to be quite honest.   1. There are honestly too many stories to read on Halo Fanon, a long list of grand tales waiting to pull you on another adventure. Despite getting a taste of more than a few among the nominated this year, I have to give my vote to the story I've been following on the site religiously. Actene's Heaven and Earth is a grand trilogy piece and Book 2 upon completion this year is a reflection of last year's success with Book 1. This year, seeing so many of Halo Fanon's content brought together by one author for a grand scale adventure and having my SPARTAN-IIIs among site juggernauts and given equal appearance and relevance felt like a watershed event for me.   3. This was a tricky one, having read any of the pieces prior to this years AA's. However between Halo: Safewind and this, I have to give it to Heavan and Earth, which as was mentioned above, builds on the fantastic work of book 1 with the same level of quality and writing strength, in a way that makes it easy to understand (even to a muppet like myself who hasn't finished book 1 yet). Whilst LHF's story is nothing to sniff at, the prologue left me confused by the use of two different names for the same character, along with some odd words that didn't make sense to myself. If he gets them ironed out then it'll be a surefire winner, but for now my vote has to go to Actene this year.   2. I may not be judge for the Weekly anymore, but I'm making sure to sift through each year for this category in particular, and of all DT's entries, this one stuck out to me the most. Amid battles, tragedies, conspiracies, and introspection, it's refreshing to just get a casual conversation once in a while, in this case about an absurd topic. Before I knew Flat-Earthers existed, I might've written this off as a ridiculous belief no one could have, but now I can't help but see how a conversation like this could come about. It sounds like the kind of philosophical conversations one might rarely have with a buddy--there's a bit of dialogue in The Good Place that talks about exactly the conversations this makes me think of. Reads like a natural conversation, in a tone that's realistic, thrown into a sci-fi universe's setting. It's a day in the life of a Halo universe denizen and I'm for it on that count. The clock ticks are the basis for the story as they measure the tempo not just of time but of Sasha's heartbeat. Despite myself wanting to write them off as unnecessary because Tim's writing is so well done, its exclusion would be sorely missed. I feel like I do a disservice to the site by not keeping better track of short stories and Weekly entries because there are some serious diamonds as far as I can tell - no - all of them are gems in their own right. The pickings for Best Short Fiction this year was excellent, and I'm sad I can't vote for all of them so at the very least I want to vote for the ones I think are being overlooked. Insubordinate by Sniper is awesome, but these stories deserve this victory just as much. Tim's story is also a nice realization that I've been on this site long enough that I can recognize collaborations - seeing familiar names from Tim, Darthnicky, and Spartan-D042 says a lot here.   1. I struggled to make a decision in throwing a vote between PeteFile's Decision or Here There Be Monsters by Even. Ended up choosing Even despite I think there being a stronger grammatic handling in Decision. Decision is an excellent and soft, personal story for a Spartan who finally had it made in a way that really no other Spartan in canon has truly been able to achieve. A suicide child-soldier who survived long enough to even consider a true and whole retirement without strings attached and with a long, realized service life for it? A choice between continuing to fight and serve, or raise the family he cultivated? Really well written short, but I chose Here There Be Monsters because of the novelty of it, the concept behind it. Seeing the Ballista Program's cultivated killers, AIs in full on robot suits capable of mowing down regular Covenant forces as if toys, it's a terrifying experience. Despite not immediately fitting within the Halo fabric from say the Bungie era, the greater appreciation and acceptance of mech/gundam-type characterizations with Halo Legends - The Prototype, Halo Wars 2's Sergeant Johnson mech DLC, and Halo 4's Mantis walker onward? Just slapping an AI into the head to control a metal beast of this nature and fighting in enclosed spaces? This is a reminder of what item I want in the final set piece of Itter Rock.   2. Falkeno's romp onto the site with his small army of canonically-expanded Spartans came as a great surprise but as I've come to know him, I consider him a good friend and a good site contributor. His introsepctions on trying to bring Spartan operations in the lore to closer proximity and even greater heights is impressive, and seeing him greatly expand on forgotten Spartans from the canon is much appreciated. I didn't expect Joseph-122 to become a household name in Halo, less so Halo Fanon. While the former hasn't happened, the latter definitely is there or getting there.
