Welcome one and all to the Twelfth Annual Halo Fanon Wikia Awards for 2019. We are honoured by your attendance to this annual community awards ceremony and celebration, the twelfth and certainly not the last of its kind. This project is coordinated by the Halo Fanon Wiki Administration, and would not be possible without the hard work of our community this year.

We look forward to your participation in this community-wide celebration, and hope that you will all participate! Now, read the regulations, nominate your favourite articles, and vote!


Regulations

  1. Nominations begin at around 12:00 AM midnight UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) on December 1st, 2019 and voting begins at the same time on December 15th. It will conclude promptly around 12:00 AM midnight UTC on December 31st, 2019! Any exceptions to this are listed below. Final winners will be announced and receive their awards on January 1st, 2020!
  2. Voting Qualifications: Users eligible to nominate and vote must have been users for at least four weeks and have sixty or more mainspace edits in order to vote. Because of the style of this ceremony, sockpuppets and sock masters are not invited, and will be promptly banned from the Wiki and barred from future voting. Newer users who spam edits just to gain the required amount to participate will also be barred from voting.
  3. Nominations:
    1. You may only nominate articles for a category so long as it expressly fits the definition of each category. Nominations that are not eligible for a category will be deleted or moved to the appropriate category by the administration. You may request a clarification about the definition of any category from Brodie-001. You may not nominate an article for more than one category, with the exception of Best Canon Expansion and Best Concept. Articles that are not eligible for nomination will be removed without any notice if they are found to have "content issues" ("Unrealistic", "Non-Canon Friendly", etc.)
    2. You may nominate an unlimited number of articles written by any number of other authors for any number of categories. However, you are restricted to nominating only one of your articles for only one category for the whole ceremony. This is to promote professional sportsmanship. For categories pertaining to users ("Best Writer of the Year", "Breakthrough User of the Year"), you may not nominate yourself.
    3. "Recycled" articles will not be accepted into the nomination process. An article that has received minor or no edits for the duration of the year is not eligible for the event. Every article's edit history will be checked when nominated, and will remain valid for nomination only if it has received moderate to major changes/improvements throughout the year.
    4. You must nominate articles according to the proper format (listed below). Fill out all the fields when submitting a nomination, and post the completed nomination form underneath the category that you're nominating the article in question for.
    5. Perceived breaches of good conduct and professional sportsmanship will be prosecuted by the administration to maintain the dignity of this voting system.
    6. The author of an article reserves the right to withdraw his or her own article from a nomination at any time, with or without given reasons. However, if a user has nominated an article that is not their own, they may not withdraw it.
    7. Eligible categories are decided in advance by the administration. If you have a suggestion for the addition or removal of a category, please discuss it with one of the administrators.
    8. Winning articles of the previous annual awards be nominated only if it's been improved upon drastically after receiving a previous award, for a maximum of three awards in separate years. This applies only to the articles, not the authors of the articles, who may only win the Best Writer or Breakthrough User award once. This does not mean that the article can only win three awards; for example, if an article can be nominated for the Best Canon Expansion category, along with its own category, and wins in the top three awards of the year, and does so for three separate years, the article in question can theoretically win nine awards in total (this is, however, highly unlikely).
  4. You may always contest in a category even if you won an article in that same category before with a different article.
  5. Voting:
    1. Eligible users may vote for a maximum of two articles in a given category. You may vote for only one of your own articles for the entire ceremony, no matter how many articles you have in how many categories. You may not vote for yourself under a user category.
    2. Please sign your vote with a non-bubble text signature to verify your identity.
    3. You do not have to vote for an article you nominated.
    4. The process has two stages: nomination and voting. Users may nominate articles for the Annual Awards starting from December 1st, 2019 to December 15th, 2019, in order to fill out the categories with prospective AA winners. Then, from the 15th to the 30th, voting will take place across all categories. Nominations after the 15th will also be accepted.
    5. Winners of the Heroic, Legendary and Mythic Articles of the year will be decided between December 30th, 2019, and January 1st, 2020.
    6. Any categories with ties by 12:00 AM UTC on December 30th, 2019 (24 hours before the end of the vote) will be remitted from public voting and will enter private administrative ballot to decide ties. The results of the ballot will be announced afterwards. All administrators with a registered email will have twenty-four hours to decide ties.
  6. Winning:
    1. The article for the most votes in a given category will be formally acknowledged as the winner for the category, and the article and its author will be commended by an official award granted by the administration approximately by January 1st, 2020 and the end of the ceremony. Category-winning articles will be eligible for winning the Heroic, Legendary or Mythic Article of the Year awards once voting is over.
    2. In the event of a tie, a tiebreaker will be performed, and the winner will be decided by private administrative ballot. The ballot's content will be disclosed at the end of the ceremony.
    3. If an article is the only nomination in its category and receives fewer than three votes, it will be combined with another similar category after the voting process to avoid "winning by default", and votes will be counted accordingly.
    4. Only one article may win each award in the placement category from 2018 onwards. In the event of a tie at this stage, a private ballot will be held by the Administration to determine the winner. This has been done due to several years of two or more articles winning a major award due to ties.

Category Definitions

Characters

  • Best SPARTAN of the Year — Any character enrolled in any SPARTAN program.
  • Best UNSC Personnel of the Year — Any character associated with the UNSC Marine Corps/Navy/Army/Air Force or any of its subordinate commands. Does not include SPARTANs.
  • Best Sangheili Character of the Year — Any Sangheili character of any affiliation.
  • Best Third-Party Faction Character — Any non-Sangheili character who is affiliated with a non-UNSC organization; includes, but is not limited to: AI, Insurrectionists, organized criminals, Forerunners, Precursors, etc.

Technologies

  • Best Vehicle of the Year — Any classification of vehicle or individual vehicle capable of spaceflight, extra-atmospheric, or ground travel.
  • Best Technology of the Year — Any physical object or knowledge paradigm used to influence an individual's interaction with the environment, including, but not limited to, defensive systems, weapons, equipment, etc...

Societal

  • Best Event of the Year — Any event that occurs, including a military engagement (battle, campaign, or war) between any contenders for any length of time, or a non-military event.
  • Best Location of the Year — Anything involving planets, cities, space stations etc. If it's on a map, it can be nominated here.
  • Best Organization of the Year — Any organization, including, but not limited to, governments, militaries, military subdivisions, units, civilian corporations, etc...

Stories

  • Best Novel of the Year — Best long literary fiction. A nominated novel does not have to be completed but substantial progress should have been made. There is a general minimum length threshold for novels to be considered. Does not include roleplays.
  • Best Short Fiction of the Year — Best short literary fiction. Short fictions can be nominated in groups or collections. It is recommended that the nominated fiction is completed.

Users

  • Best Writer of the Year — For literary excellence in writing articles, fictions, roleplays, and/or productions.
  • Breakthrough User of the Year — For newfound outstanding participation and contribution on the wiki and friendly interaction with the community.

Miscellaneous

  • Best Concept of the Year — A sort of 'other' category for quality articles that do not fit into any other category or are not seen enough on the site to warrant their own section; species, games etc.
  • Best Canon Expansion of the Year — A well-written article based off a canon element or article that has strong connections to canon as well as the author's own creativity.
  • Best Collaboration of the Year — Any singular collaborative work, including but not limited to, roleplays, expanded universe, alternate universe, or other type of article written by two or more people that does not qualify for any of the above categories.

Placement

  • Heroic Article of the Year — The article with the third most number of votes in the "placement" stage.
  • Legendary Article of the Year — The article with the second most number of votes in the "placement" stage.
  • Mythic Article of the Year — The article with the most number of votes in the "placement" stage.

  2. Despite Alpha Gang obviously being the superior company, I have to credit Pete for his tenacity on Sam. Rewriting a character is not something easily done, yet Pete has done it with little flaw, which is something I can only be envious of. Oriana is yet another great Spartan written by this man, but despite my Alpha loyalties she seems more like a runner-up in terms of Pete's Spartans compared to Sam. I think Samuel's gone really far this year, and still has quite the journey ahead of him. UnggoyZealot

While I would say that all of these articles would be deserving of this award in their own rights, the stiff competition offered by both Cody and Samuel this year makes me hesitant to choose either of the other two. As such, the choice ultimately fell to which of the options was better, or if I thought they both deserved a vote. While it is certainly close, and I debated going with the latter path, the close race in this category led me to decide to only choose one, and it was ultimately the formating and stylistic choices on Sam's article that turned the tide for me. Both have excellent content and certainly look good, but the singular continuity of Samuel's page and the neat little table for his weapon pushed it over the edge for me. Thus, he has earned my vote.   1. It's a tough call between Cody and Samuel. One of the coolest things about this site's community is seeing characters and concepts come into their own as community institutions. That's on display for a lot of articles this cycle, but Cody is definitely a standout when it comes to characters becoming household--or at least Discord--names. Actene: Heaven and Earth
  2. I don’t have much to say (was never great at reviewing), so I guess I’ll just leave it at “BetaCompanyBestCompany.” KOY-1150-5 - (Talk) - * KingOfYou115 throws a book at <insert name here>.
  3. As quirky as my own Spartan characters can often be, I have to appreciate when someone doubles down on Spartan-IIIs as vengeance-motivated and rather overwhelmingly angry about the whole 'family, home, and everything I ever loved burned by the Covenant' thing. Yeah, one can tell neat stories about humans and say, Sangheili working together after that big ole misunderstanding of the Human-Covenant War, but really digging in, that's probably not going to be an easy forgive and forget, and Spartan-IIIs by nature of being Covenant war orphans are in an ideal place to approach that theme. Cody's story does that digging in, and furthermore makes connections to plenty of other users' characters through collaborations this year and in years prior, which always earns bonus points from me when it comes to AAs.   5. Looking at both, I see that we are close in terms of character development and content for each SPARTAN. However, Cody edges out Sam in raw content and production of stories compared to Samuel, right now. As much as I would love for Sam to win, Cody deserves the title of Best SPARTAN after working on his character page for the past x amount of years.   6. I agree that Pete has put in a lot of effort into Sam's page, but my vote goes to Cody for being the badass he's been for years.   7. D042 is an excellent writer who is deeply invested in the community. Cody has become a bit of a meme (much like Hera) in the discord, but in truth, Cody is exceptionally deep, thoughtful and interesting.   8. It's a SPARTAN-III year clearly. I'm throwing my weight behind Cody-B042 this year. Spartan-D042 is a great friend and a great site moderator, and he's done nothing but prove his metal. Cody-B042 is without a doubt a site meme, and a recognized household name. That doesn't happen without establishing a form of clout to back up that character's presence. Cody for me takes the cake because his overall site presence is backed up in stories and collaborations, and has established himself as one of the propelry-dark depictions of a Spartan on the site. I like his competition this year as well, with two powerhouses in the form of Sam and Oriana, particularly with Sam. I expect Sam to be the rising star in the coming new year but I don't believe this is his year as he hasn't had the time to build a strong reputation through stories and collaborations just yet. Bodark is honestly one of my favorite characters to make an appearance this year and is one of my favorite training depictions on the site though with admittingly a style that reads more like a prose than a summarization which could honestly use some work. There is no shortage of strong contenders in the Best Spartan category this year, but I feel the veteran that I've nominated repeatedly in two years previous, deserves this win. - Distant Tide: Hunter - Killer

Annual Award Best Sangheili Character Best Sangheili Character of the Year

Felo 'Ranak (Brodie-001)

  1. I'm kind of surprised Felo was nominated so late this year. Then again, I expected him to be a contender at last year's awards as well. Felo is a strong character and embodies the traditional values of a Sangheili, having fought through the betrayals of both his brothers but emerging victorious. It's secured my vote. UnggoyZealot
  2. I'll echo UZ's surprise and take it a step further by saying I'm surprised this didn't already have an award. One of Brodie's foundational characters, one of the strongest contenders for best Sangheili in recent memory. Actene: Heaven and Earth

While he's got a long history through appearances in the Sigmaverse, I only recently became reacquainted with the character through RP: Imperium, where he's played ground forces leader for the Swords. Glancing at the note on Felo's origin on the article, that's a far cry from where the character was conceived, and it's nice to see some ideas and names survive the test of time through what must certainly be several incarnations of Brodie's plots. It's turned out a more complex character and a more robust article to chronicle it than the author must've initially expected, and it's fun to see the result of those evolutions.   6. It's a shoo-in but that doesn't mean anything less of Felo 'Ranak. His commanding presence in the Imperium RP shows how much Brodie has grown as a writer. His years on Halo Fanon were not wasted as proven here as his planned tenure of the site begins to draw to a probable close. While the article writing is solid and fits confidently among Brodie's best works on the site, its really Felo's narrative depictions - particularly in Imperium as its where I've been bear witness to the character's presence that makes me recognize Felo as something special. Brodie has stated much of Imperium is inspired by ideas brought about by watching an anime, the Legend of the Galactic Heroes. 'Ranak has been a compelling character to follow in this last year, given all the factors at play. I hope his story ends with a satisfying bang, and that the ideas he's inspired by are as compelling as the character they helped produce. - Distant Tide: Hunter - Killer

  1. It's a strange thing to say, but we get surprisingly few 'complete' character articles where the person in question has their entire life story laid out. In any case, it's a great article that like many of Distant's pages really goes the extra mile to develop a fully realised character, which is why it gets my vote. 「 Brodie-001: Finished the fight」
  2. Another tough call, clinched for me by the character existing in tandem with other stories and characters and defined by something more than pure military service. Actene: Heaven and Earth
  3. Due to the large sections of Daniel's page that remain empty, I feel this comes down to a choice between Colton and Viktoria. While I do believe that Colton is the more developed character in terms of total amount of content, the other factors present in Viktoria's page that are missing from his are what led me to this decision. Primarily, I found Colton's page a bit visually lacking compared to some other articles of Pete's that I have seen this year, with comparatively little use of images or tables, though the quotes were a nice touch. In addition, I feel that Viktoria relates more to the content of the site around her, at least from what I have been able to see, while also offering a more complete, albeit shorter, exploration of the life of the character in question, from birth to death. Colton Bryson (TPF) (ThePeteFiles)

  1. I found this category particularly tough this year; three solidly written and expanded characters, each with a mostly-insular story as articles by themselves. What pushed Bryson's page ahead for me has been, in particular, the solid content dedicated to Bryson's life after military service and continuing relationship with it. Criticism of placing Spartans in officer roles, remaining active in the lives of fellow servicemen as a speaker advocating awareness for them. Per Brodie, few articles reach a stage of as-near-to-complete as any writer ever gets, and I like that Bryson's story takes advantage of his survival past war-story-plots-relevance to show the character doing something ongoing after.   3. PeteFiles has established himself this year alone as one of the most compelling technical writers on the site, establishing a high standard for pragmatic realism and structural grasp that makes his military-oriented characters and organizations a sight to behold. His commitment to finding ways to incorporate modern military concepts into a confusingly-structured organization like the UNSC is much appreciated by giving connection and deft to a fictional structure like the human military. Even if we approach character writing differently, Pete has been a great inspiration for my own work and played a role in motivating me to write Viktoria Bradford as her own established character. Thanks, Pete, for being a bro, and creating a career military man like Colton. - Distant Tide: Hunter - Killer

Elena has all the things I value in a character article such as great details and well thought out character development.   6. Police officer, stranding victim, mother, augmented pilot. The Zaytseva family is an interesting lot with storied members, and one of some award-winning characters it seems too. Even though Elena won last year, it's clear that Tim has dedicated a continuous improvement of this character, doubling the character's details in a year. Very impressive indeed.   2. There's a bit of bias on my part here given that Dynasty shares a tradition with the Chancer V, but I will always prefer a storied individual ship to a broader class of technology. Dynasty lives large in Brodie's novels and short stories and richly deserves the award. Actene: Heaven and Earth

  4. It was a close one but the story development and adventures of the Dynasty just managed to edge out the ORA. I especially liked the part of holding the Home Fleet hostage, a unique but very possible scene which was quite the twist in reading the article.   5. I'm going to use my single self-vote on the Dynasty this year. As a ship that served as the centerpiece for a trilogy of novels written over the course of five years, I really tried to give it some well-deserved love this year and at the time of writing it stands as one of my few (almost) completed works. 「 Brodie-001: Finished the fight」

  3. This one I really had to think hard about, as each nominated article has strengths wildly different from one another. There are a few rare articles which chronicle the particular pre-FTL period of Halo's timeline, and this page in particular ties itself into the most important events of that period by taking on an important subject: what interstellar travel would have looked like pre-FTL, and how its invention changed the shape of human civilization. The weakness of such articles is they rarely tie into anything related to 'current events', as it were, but what won me over is the article makes that weakness a second strength by coming up with reasons to do exactly that. Now all it needs is connecting with a story about one of these long-lost, hypersleep colony ships being found again, even recounted in a character biography.   1. Perhaps a little bit of bias here, with a self-nomination and now self-vote, but, compared to the other options, I truly believe this ship class captures something at least somewhat unique. First, contrary to Actene's vote on the Dynasty, I have always liked a more generalized approach to technologies and ships, compared to specific vehicles. This is largely just personal preference. Next, while the ORA-class is certainly well written with an interesting premise that I can't fault the authors for approaching, I have never personally been a fan of the idea of 'subspace interdiction' as presented in the article. Finally, while the Enzmann Starship does offer its own unique twist on starship classes, coming from before the FTL era, as mentioned before, such ships can often be difficult to integrate into the current setting of Halo. While, as was pointed out, Kobold has managed to find a way to do this, and a certainly interesting way, it remains that the resulting integration is largely interesting due to the characters onboard the ship and their reactions to the sudden leap forward in time from their perspective, not so much the ship proper. As such, I feel that the civilian nature of the Infinitum, as well as the choice to avoid giving it conventional weapons off the bat, allows for the exploration of ships in a context beyond just that of typical military actions that Halo tends to find itself facing, and, well, I guess I'm just a sucker for the non-conventional in my halo fanon. While Enterprise is by no means a bad article, and is, in fact, extremely close to these two, I had to rely on a few smaller features to decide. In this case, the built-in exclusivity of the PRAETORIAN and COSSACK suits, their looks, and the direct relation of the armors to the UNSC and SPARTAN branch push these ones slightly ahead. While I certainly appreciate the effort to link ENTERPRISE to the canon and the BUCCANEER suit, keeping it within the UNSC rather than primarily a third party project has made these articles seem more approachable, to me, in a sense. We've long had Rumbledrugs and other ideas of Insurrectionists or other groups trying to develop a response to Spartans, and now we're entering an era where corporate ambition will lead to rivals popping up on the civilian and criminal market. Furthest Point is by no means a bad article in and of itself, but to me, it seems that the large majority of its development comes, or is set to come, within the story featuring it as a setting, rather than on the page itself. While being linked to other projects on the site isn't a detriment, and is, in-fact, often a boon, the fact remains that, as an article, Barrow has more going on, and what is has going on is just as well developed, with a keen eye for more technical details about the colony world that I admit a tendency to like. It speaks to the article's purpose and manages not to overthrow the balance of detail level in the process, and thus reads to me almost as more of an RPG-like setting in a similar vein to Tyraxus Tribe did with its major NPCs, as it were. The attention to detail here, particularly in chronicling Force Recon's history from our present day to the 26th century, makes this an excellent entry into Halo's Marine Corps fanon.   2. Being posted all at once, I had almost no idea this article existed, and it's a staggering amount of content, especially to dedicate to a the subject of developing the S-II augmentations. It does read pretty densely, and a number of commas throughout could be removed to improve readability, but the media incorporated in the article really impresses me. Not since Blue Nights have I seen so many interview logs, and I'm thrilled someone has seen fit to use the templates given by Halo 5's bonus content for creating ONI Records and Personnel profiles. Mind, some of that media needs a little adjustment in formatting, as with pixel width I see some of the images overrun where a 100% width adjustment would keep it visible on every screen--but that's for private discussion. With an argumentative essay, the author is tasked with taking position on an issue and defending it, and taking on the mindset of a character tasked with picking a side in an issue relevant to the world and it's story can be tremendously useful for fleshing out their views on the central conflicts and the complexity of the story taking them into account as consequence.   2. As per my vote above for Force Recon, this feels like a fun throwback to earlier years when military organization expansions were much more commonplace on the site. Actene: Heaven and Earth
  3. Some names just keep coming up in Halo lore with little explanation. The AAG has been nebulously in the picture since Reach, occupying an important link in ONI's chain of command over Spartans and who has authority to send them on missions. Thus, it makes for a prime Expansion candidate, able to provide a link between the users who point to it as the part of big, scary ONI sending their characters where their plots demand, and providing a power structure for ONI characters to potentially work and compete through. I think its next task might be to introduce some of the officer characters who hold positions in this group, what power they have, and how one might work around them. Head of the group wants something from someone, someone doesn't want to do it, head threatens to assign them to suicide mission. That kind of wholesome ONI thing. While the Valhalla Dossier is a neat concept, and it meshes the articles it collects together well within the framework of an in-universe explanation, I can't help but feel that Imperium is the better collaboration. Each of the articles included on the Dossier are impressive in their own rights, and it was a brilliant idea by D042 to collect them as he has, but the effort put in by Brodie to corral the amount of people that he has for as long as he has and the effort those people being corralled have put in to keep pumping quality content into Imperium leads me to see it as a more fluidly evolving collaboration, and thus, it earns my vote. This convoluted mess of a story started as an absent-minded effort to make good on a New Year's resolution to write more consistently and morphed into something far larger than I ever expected it to be. I'm not always satisfied with the result but it has been and continues to be a wonderful learning experience.   8. I might be about to make a comparison that'll give a couple users a small heart attack, but I promise I mean it favorably: H&E reminds me of AAO's Flight of the Phoenix in a way. FotP, for better or worse, provided an avenue for any and all contributions to AAO's universe an avenue to show up in the main driving story in a meaningful way, and looking just at the list of users who have characters involved in these events, it's clear H&E has much of that same energy, though what universe it all falls under is slightly less defined. There are enough I'd almost have expected to see it in the Collab category. Per above, people are talking about it, generating hype and lending that energy to other users' ambitions of writing out their own long-form stories. I dare say the site needs a story like this in every era, and I'm grateful to Actene that some of my own contributions have been able to be involved. Actene did buy my vote.   1. Pete's been the real deal this year. He's been pumping out work like nothing's to it, which is something only my younger self can relate with. He's done quite a few collaborations with fellow users during his time here, and he's tenacious. Three times the charm for Samuel-B256 on GA, and his other Spartans provide a great deal of interest as well. While Silver's definitely an awesome writer, I find it that his main contributions (At least from my perspective) are short stories and anthologies, which are a bit unorthodox compared to the writing of usual articles.
