Plot Summary[]In 2540, a secretive and influential group of officers from the Office of Naval Intelligence initiated an off-the-books operation known as CLOAK AND DAGGER. The mission, the abduction of 50 children from homes throughout the inner colonies, was the first step in the creation of a third class of SPARTAN-II supersoldiers---the ARES Program. Supervising this project, under direct orders of Admiral Ned Rich, was a seasoned Marine Corps Colonel named Griffin Standoff. For the next eight years, Standoff and the LEONIDAN SPARTAN-II Laszlo Katona led the training of these fifty candidates, recreating every possible aspect of SPARTAN-II in the same form. These recruits died in droves on augmentation day---just like their Class One predecessors---and were nearly wiped out in the three years of combat that followed, but not before killing thousands of Covenant soldiers. In 2558, six years after the end of the Great War, the UNSC Infinity, Spartan Branch was confronted with a serious breach of security and massive insult to their independence: an ONI Section Zero operative, Codename: EGOR, infiltrated their ranks during the Requiem Campaign. Masquerading as an entire fireteam---by himself---the mysterious SPARTAN-II fought on the surface, gathering intel on Spartan Branch, before disappearing once discovered. ONI and Section Zero both chose to stonewall Spartan's inquiries, rather than explain EGOR's true mission, and in response, Spartan commissioned a mission to track him down and apprehend him: Operation: SKADHI. After nearly two years of tracking him, Spartan Intel's mission had hit a roadblock. Section Zero, practiced at hiding their operatives, were proving impossible to beat. Despite two direct action missions against EGOR, Spartan had failed to capture him. With pressure high and options limited, the supervising officer, Codename: MONTAGUE, was willing to resort to any measures to capture EGOR. And so, when Colonel Griffin Standoff of the ARES project contacted him, he arranged a meeting, rather than dismiss him out of hand. Dramatis Personae[]
