The Weekly — Week 323: Worldly Dreams |
---|
We all have that scene we're dying to write. The climax of story, a critical moment in a character's journey, a daring escape or exciting confrontation--these are the scenes burning a hole in your brain that you've just never had the chance to put into writing. Until now. And as someone who's managed to get many of these scenes out of my brain, I have to warn you: the end product isn't always the thrilling piece of literature you imagined. But that's all part of the writing process: get it out of your head where people can see and critique it, then double back and refine, refine refine. For this prompt, write a scene you've always wanted to write and give it a go. Be sure to provide a bit of context outside of the prose itself to help center the setting. In order to give you more room to do your scene justice, I'm upping the word count to 2000 words on this one. Cut loose and have fun! |

Random Good Article: Melissa McKay |
---|
First Lieutenant Melissa McKay was an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper and a Marine officer serving under the 22nd Battalion of the 105th Shock Troops Division. She is notable for her actions in the battles nearing the end of the Human-Covenant War, having carried out her duties with a selflessness that many of her fellow Helljumpers widely admired her for. In the final years of her service, she worked closely with Major Antonio Silva as well as her battalion's commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Lorente. In 2550, McKay was given the rank of Captain and served briefly as the 22nd Battalion's adjutant until May 2552, when she disobeyed orders during an operation on Mamore and was consequently demoted to the rank of First Lieutenant. Lorente and Silva's next-in-command, Captain Mizuki Katsumawa, were both Killed In Action during the Battle of Reach, and McKay assumed the position of executive officer under Silva's command. She was with the members of the 22nd Battalion that escaped Reach on board the UNSC Pillar of Autumn towards the end of the battle. McKay played a major tactical role in the ODSTs' operations during the Battle of Installation 04 and was tasked with a commanding role that would have under normal circumstances exceeded her authority. Nonetheless, she performed well due to her previous military experience and her own skills as both a tactician and a field officer. She led numerous successful operations over the course of four days on Installation 04, including the capture of a Covenant-held Forerunner butte as well as the commandeering of the Covenant CCS-class battlecruiser Truth and Reconciliation. McKay was killed when she deliberately crashed the Truth and Reconciliation onto the surface of Installation 04, believing that Silva had become blinded with the prospect of glory in bringing the Flood-infested ship back to Earth and that he was unaware of the dangers of doing so. She died with every surviving member of the 22nd Battalion along with all hands on board, shortly before the destruction of Installation 04. Six months after her death, McKay's heroic efforts were recognized with her being posthumously awarded the Silver Star medal at the Voi Memorial on March 3rd, 2553. |

Fanon of the Month — April 2024: Camp Currahee |
---|
Camp Currahee was a UNSC military training camp created by the Office of Naval Intelligence to serve as headquarters for the SPARTAN-III Program. Constructed on Onyx in the Zeta Doradus system, a world entirely redacted from UEG public record by ONI, Currahee provided a classified location for the illegal indoctrination and training of the program's child supersoldiers. The camp was furnished with many specialized training facilities, from classrooms and laboratories to firing ranges and assault courses, to suit the requirements of a training regime developed by LCDR Kurt Ambrose to turn orphans of the ongoing Human-Covenant War into expendable commandos with capabilities approaching their SPARTAN-II predecessors. Beginning operation with the arrival of Alpha Company's trainees on December 27th, 2532, Camp Currahee would see frequent rearrangement to provide fresh challenges for its cadets, replace specific facilities for different phases of training, and make room for additional structures as required. The camp would be in continuous use for the next two decades, successfully graduating three SPARTAN-III companies and be preparing for a fourth when events elsewhere triggered the onset of the Onyx Conflict. After a detachment of Sentinels killed or scattered the majority of base staff, Camp Currahee was abandoned by Ambrose and the remaining survivors, leaving it empty when Onyx, revealed to be a Forerunner Shield World, collapsed in on itself, destroying what remained of the largest SPARTAN training facility to date. |

Mythic Article of the Year: UNSC Eidolon by Ajax 013, Distant Tide and ThePeteFiles. |
---|
The UNSC Eidolon was a UNSC warship that saw service at the end of the Human-Covenant War, and beyond. Modified heavily by the Office of Naval Intelligence, she was used to support the UNSC's growing need for a long range, special forces support vessel. Despite her originally designed role, she would go on to partake in a number of operations, with her honours including supporting the Radio Beacon Deployment Program, delivering a strategic nuclear weapon for a retaliatory strike, and fighting in the siege of the Solar system itself. The Eidolon would go on to carve out an important legacy in the post-war period, supporting the UNSC's efforts against the myriad threats to their survival, and becoming a focal point of resistance during the Created Conflict. The legacy of the Eidolon left a permanent mark on the UNSC's doctrine in both naval service and as a commando ship. Read more»
