The Weekly — Week 319: Strange New Worlds |
---|
After a few more specifically honed prompts, I'm in the mood for something basic this week. Write 1000 words or so of a scene featuring the sci-fi staple of an exotic alien locale. Do whatever you want thematically, just make sure to incorporate a strange planet or alien culture into what's going on. I'll narrow the scope a little bit by saying that if you choose to focus on the strangeness of a culture, use an existing Halo species and be creative within the bounds of established lore. Use your imagination and do something interesting! |

Random Good Article: Leonid-144 |
---|
Senior Chief Petty Officer Leonid Fleischer, known throughout life as SPARTAN-144 or Codename: EGOR, was a highly skilled assassin and graduate of the original SPARTAN-II Program. Despite hailing from the most celebrated unit of the war, the socially isolated soldier spent much of his life in absolute secrecy. As part of Operation: LEONIDAS, Leonid was abducted during the augmentation procedures and replaced with a flash clone, leaving his former superiors to write him off as dead, even as he entered into a new career as a top level agent for the Office of Naval Intelligence. Elements within Section Zero, the internal affairs department of the intelligence agency, identified the SPARTAN as a potential asset in it’s work, and under the direction of Codename: CHAUCER, director of the Field Investigation Team, arranged for the kidnapping and induction of Leonid-144. Working as both a tracker and a triggerman for the notoriously deadly group, Leonid spent years prosecuting and eliminating internal targets that were deemed a threat. During this time, Leonid’s superiors would themselves come into contact with a corrupting influence, agents of the elusive Operation: BLUE NIGHTS, eventually culminating in a conflict of interest between the Field Investigation Team and investigators working in Operation: VORAUSSICHT. Following detainment by these investigators, Leonid would be covertly assigned to the UNSC Infinity, where the assassin masqueraded as a SPARTAN-IV in order to hide in plain sight. Following this stint aboard the Infinity, Leonid would again return to service as an assassin, cementing a legacy as one of ONI’s most effective and deadly agents. |

Mythic Article of the Year: UNSC Eidolon by Ajax 013, Distant Tide and ThePeteFiles. |
---|
The UNSC Eidolon was a UNSC warship that saw service at the end of the Human-Covenant War, and beyond. Modified heavily by the Office of Naval Intelligence, she was used to support the UNSC's growing need for a long range, special forces support vessel. Despite her originally designed role, she would go on to partake in a number of operations, with her honours including supporting the Radio Beacon Deployment Program, delivering a strategic nuclear weapon for a retaliatory strike, and fighting in the siege of the Solar system itself. The Eidolon would go on to carve out an important legacy in the post-war period, supporting the UNSC's efforts against the myriad threats to their survival, and becoming a focal point of resistance during the Created Conflict. The legacy of the Eidolon left a permanent mark on the UNSC's doctrine in both naval service and as a commando ship. Read more»
