Prompt period: 8 April 2024 -- 15 April 2024
Judge: Actene

We all have that scene we're dying to write. The climax of story, a critical moment in a character's journey, a daring escape or exciting confrontation--these are the scenes burning a hole in your brain that you've just never had the chance to put into writing. Until now. And as someone who's managed to get many of these scenes out of my brain, I have to warn you: the end product isn't always the thrilling piece of literature you imagined. But that's all part of the writing process: get it out of your head where people can see and critique it, then double back and refine, refine refine. For this prompt, write a scene you've always wanted to write and give it a go. Be sure to provide a bit of context outside of the prose itself to help center the setting.

In order to give you more room to do your scene justice, I'm upping the word count to 2000 words on this one. Cut loose and have fun!

Random Good Article: Kaaranese Sangheili
FearlessLeader26001200

Compared to some species, such as humanity, the Sangheili have been a technologically advanced society for a considerable amount of time, expanding from their homeworld of Sanghelios relatively soon after acquiring interstellar travel capabilities, and making First Contact with the San'Shyuum in 938 B.C.E., leading to total war. It is easy to forget that, in the long run, their establishment of interstellar colonies is still only a recent occurrence in the 100,000 years since the Forerunners embarked upon their "Great Journey", and that for the most part the Sangheili remained as they were when they were archived - a primitive but robust warrior species, perfectly adapted to the harsh conditions of Sanghelios. It is therefore difficult to see how the Sangheili could have colonised a planet such as Ketesh thousands of years before they acquired slipspace technology, forgotten about the colony, and its inhabitants built up a society to rival that of Sanghelios itself.

The answer, of course, is that they didn't. Genetic studies of Sangheili mitochondrial DNA show that the Kaaranese split off from the main species much earlier - approximately 250,000 years ago, even before the activation of the Halo Array. Exactly how the Kaaranese reached Ketesh remains a mystery few feel confident in solving - even Kaaranese legend is extremely hazy on the subject, mentioning only that their ancestors were "guided" to their new home by "the Holy Light of the Gods wisdom" as they fled persecution, and known as the First Exodus of the Followers of Light. Exactly what they were fleeing is not stated - neither is how they reached Ketesh, when it would be another 99,062 years until their Sanghelios ancestors would achieve interstellar travel themselves. What is known is that the Kaaranese Sangheili made this planet their home, and have branched out in almost every way possible, making it their own.

Fanon of the Month — April 2024: Camp Currahee
CampCurrahee

Camp Currahee was a UNSC military training camp created by the Office of Naval Intelligence to serve as headquarters for the SPARTAN-III Program. Constructed on Onyx in the Zeta Doradus system, a world entirely redacted from UEG public record by ONI, Currahee provided a classified location for the illegal indoctrination and training of the program's child supersoldiers. The camp was furnished with many specialized training facilities, from classrooms and laboratories to firing ranges and assault courses, to suit the requirements of a training regime developed by LCDR Kurt Ambrose to turn orphans of the ongoing Human-Covenant War into expendable commandos with capabilities approaching their SPARTAN-II predecessors.

Beginning operation with the arrival of Alpha Company's trainees on December 27th, 2532, Camp Currahee would see frequent rearrangement to provide fresh challenges for its cadets, replace specific facilities for different phases of training, and make room for additional structures as required. The camp would be in continuous use for the next two decades, successfully graduating three SPARTAN-III companies and be preparing for a fourth when events elsewhere triggered the onset of the Onyx Conflict. After a detachment of Sentinels killed or scattered the majority of base staff, Camp Currahee was abandoned by Ambrose and the remaining survivors, leaving it empty when Onyx, revealed to be a Forerunner Shield World, collapsed in on itself, destroying what remained of the largest SPARTAN training facility to date.

Mythic Article of the Year: UNSC Eidolon by Ajax 013, Distant Tide and ThePeteFiles.
UNSC Eidolon TEXT
"ONI wanted a ship intended to facilitate their most clandestine missions, missions far from prying eyes, never to be known to the public. Fate has a sense of humour, and she had a very different plan in mind for the Eidolon."
―Quote from the memoirs of Fleet Admiral Galia Meir

The UNSC Eidolon was a UNSC warship that saw service at the end of the Human-Covenant War, and beyond. Modified heavily by the Office of Naval Intelligence, she was used to support the UNSC's growing need for a long range, special forces support vessel. Despite her originally designed role, she would go on to partake in a number of operations, with her honours including supporting the Radio Beacon Deployment Program, delivering a strategic nuclear weapon for a retaliatory strike, and fighting in the siege of the Solar system itself.

The Eidolon would go on to carve out an important legacy in the post-war period, supporting the UNSC's efforts against the myriad threats to their survival, and becoming a focal point of resistance during the Created Conflict. The legacy of the Eidolon left a permanent mark on the UNSC's doctrine in both naval service and as a commando ship.

DeltaPistol User Image

Winner of the 2023 Legendary Article, Heroic Article, Best SPARTAN, Best UNSC Personnel award(s).

Remarks about Delta Pistol from our Community:

  1. <Death to Heroes>[The Damned] [The Lost][The Forgotten]|Deus Ex Ajax
  2. henlo, DP has done a lot this year in regards of picking up Hunters of Orion and writing out character articles. He has been relentless in pumping out content onto the site that is not only in sheer quantity, but also quality. His efforts to produce stories, receive feedback, and help out other users has propelled him into the spotlight as a respected member among our community. All in all, DP's had a successful year as a writer and I think his hard-work has paid off. Being awarded Writer of the Year would be a worthwhile achievement after the culmination of efforts throughout his time on the site. Has my vote. ThePeteFiles (talk) 22:16, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
  3. Delta Pistol has consistently produced and high-quality articles that he continues to improve on a regular basis. He's done a lot of good ework on the site and I definitely think he deserves the award this year. Brodie-001: Finished the fight
  4. Best Writer this year? Wow. Too hard to choose! All three have done tremendous work this year in their own bubbles and areas of expansion - Falk's ships, August's early UNSC (and even a throwback to the UNSA days) expansions, and Delta's characters. Delta wins out the others, in my opinion, simply due to his diversity in what he's developed this year. Several Spartan articles, multiple short stories, a novel, other UNSC characters - it's practically unending. Despite the great amount of respect and compliments I have for the other nominees, ultimately it was a tough choice, but Delta has received my vote. - TheAussie1417
  5. Not a lot left for me to say but I've got to agree with everything said above. Delta has been a constant presence on the site churning out articles with great quality while also dedicating time to his novel Hunters of Orion. It's a tough category but ultimately I've decided to vote for Delta. Mendicant Bias Sigil V1 05-032 MENDICANT BIAS Domain Link  Mendicant Bias Sigil V2
