Dmitri Zaitsev was born on Earth to a couple in the old country of Russia. At age 11 he began hunting in Siberia with his father and grandfather. He generally used a bolt-action rifle, as he felt that he had better control over his shots the longer he took. This changed when he could empty a five round magazine from the rifle in six seconds by age 16, and brought down a Siberian Tiger with one shot at 1.2 kilometers. At the age of 18 he enlisted with the UNSC Marine Corps, and was immediately made the company marksman.
Battle for Kennedy Space Port[]

Dmitri's first deployment was at the Kennedy Space Center, in which he showed his prowess with the sniper rifle again and again. He was saved from death by Zero-D576 when a Scarab killed almost half his company. The Spartan gave him the nickname "Zaichata", which is Russian for "leveret", and was the label for any sniper taught by Dmitri's ancestor: Vasili Zaitsev.
Immediately after the battle Zaitsev was promoted to Lance Corporal and awarded the Bronze Star for heroic achievement.
ODST[]

Not long after returning from a sniping mission Dmitri volunteered for the ODSTs and was accepted. After five months of intense training, Dmitri was placed under the command of Gunnery Sergeant Rafael Esquival-Cortez.
Resolution[]
During the battle for Resolution, which was a short but bloody battle between the UNSC and the Flood, Dmitri fought as an ODST for the first time. Being a marksman and thus, most unfortunately, fairly useless against the parasite, his main duty was to keep Combat and Carrier Forms away from the mortar teams while they dealt with the heavier Pure Forms.
Once the battle began to wind down he took up residence on a T1 Pelican, using the mounted gauss turret on the back to great effect, his sharpshooting skills coming in great use with the powerful weapon.
