Bless-G189, raised as Bless Kazlow, was a SPARTAN-III Gamma Company commando, briefly assigned to Spartan Team Glaive during the final days of the Human-Covenant War before joining the Department of Colonial Security as an asset to DCS Rio Station.

Born in 2538 on Kholo, Bless was too young to remember her home before the 2539 Covenant attack. She never knew her parents and was raised in an Inner Colony foster care facility before joining the SPARTAN-III Program. She graduated from the program in mid-2552 and participated in limited action on Mars, post-Battle of Mare Erythraeum. Subsequent injuries and casualties saw Team Glaive dissolved and separated, Bless was equipped with transitional SPARTAN-IV augmentation suites as part of her recovery.

Determined as less-vindictive towards aliens than other SPARTAN-IIIs, Bless was reassigned to the Colonial Security facility in Rio de Janeiro, Earth, to assist action teams responsible in monitoring the alien and Outer Colonial refugees concentrated in and around Earth refuge centers.

Nicknames and Callsigns

  • "Jane Doe": An alias handed down by Bless's peers at the New Alexandria Federal Conservatory after refusing to make friends with others in her foster care group. Standoffish and antagonistic towards those that talk about her, observers began using the alias when discussing Bless to avoid attention and trouble with attitude-policing adults.

Biography

No Memory of Home

Battle of Kholo 01

UNSC forces defend against a Covenant invasion on Kholo.

Bless Kazlow was born on the fourteenth of June, 2538, in a southern hemisphere town on the human colony world of Kholo. Information about her upbringing is sparse due to the loss of government census and infrastructure servers on the planet. Not even a year old, Kholo was attacked by a Covenant invasion force that became the Battle of Kholo. As a one-sided event, the Covenant landed a rare ground assault force while Covenant cruisers rained plasma upon the planet's surface.

Due to a very small UNSC naval force defending the planet, the military could not dedicate major resources to a planetary evacuation and directed most of the civilian populace underground into Insurrection-era bunkers spread among the planet's population centers. Instead of waiting out a Covenant bombardment, the alien glassing beams kept burning and melted through the rock and concrete, cooking the civilians inside. The unlucky ones lived as the melted bunker mechanisms locked populations inside, leading to mass suffocation or starvation.

Bless one one of a lucky few who got off the planet. It was reported in Bless's official Naval Intelligence report that her parents raced to catch a orbital-bound police Pelican dropship commandeered by an ONI Security team at the edge of their town. Seconds from destruction, Bless was retrieved by an unnamed ONI corpsman as Bless's parents were cut down by alien gunfire. It is disputed if Bless was the name her parents gave her, or one possibly assigned by the UNSC troops that saved her. Her hometown's name was lost in the subsequent glassing of the area. Marked as a healthy baby but too young to be transferred to cryostasis, an infant Bless was monitored by a UNSC medical crew around the clock during Slipspace transit and later transferred to a military foster care facility near New Alexandria on Reach.

Gamma Company

NAFC

The New Alexandria Federal Conservatory, Bless's home until she joined SPARTAN-III Gamma Company.

"I swear the trees were speaking Latin. I can't have been hallucinating, right?"
―Bless-G189 on her experiences on Onyx.

Upon authorization of SPARTAN-III Gamma Company in July 2544, Bless made the short list of considered recruits for the Spartan training unit. Recruiters from the Office of Naval Intelligence made a visit in August 2544 and discovered a very disdainful girl who wanted to be anywhere but in the foster care facility. Adults described her as "cold and disturbed", her class and bunkmates called her "Jane Doe" despite having an established name. A subsidiary of the New Alexandria Federal Conservatory, the organization was a proven way home for Alpha and Beta Company prospects in years before, revealing further success with Gamma Company. Informed briefly on the nature of recruitment and the SPARTAN-III program, Bless jumped at the opportunity to become a defender of humanity like so many before her.

Placed into cryostasis by Project BRUTUS minders, Bless made the interstellar journey from Reach aboard the UNSC Agincourt alongside other frozen Gamma Company recruits to the remote human world of Onyx where they would take up residence at the training facility, Camp Currahee. On July seventh, the thawed children met their new training director at the camp gates, the SPARTAN-II supersoldier Lieutenant Commander Kurt Ambrose. After receiving basic introductions to other drill and combat instructors and a speech on their foreseeable future of training and purpose, the Gamma Company recruits were to return to the Pelican transports that brought them to the Onyx surface and pass a rite of passage experienced by previous training companies all the same. Bless didn't understand the context of the evening jump but felt fear all the same as the Onyx dusk bathed the Pelican troop bay in darkness and a drill instructor started yelling simplified directions about Falcon Wing parachute harnesses. She put the parachute on all the same despite the wind in her face and the invisible ground below her. When the other children were corralled into a line, she followed suit. When her time came she almost froze but having watched other toddlers leap out to their seemingly deaths, however, the pressure of others waiting in line motivated her to rush out and off the back of the Pelican and into the night. When her parachute monitor told her to pull her chord, she did so and the rest came easy - sailing through the windy darkness until her legs found the hard-hitting ground that bruised her shoulders and knees.

"You weren't the first. You won't be the last. They could do it, you can do it."
―Bless's self-motivating mantra for Gamma Company.

Bless made it through jump night like most of the recruits. After being recovered by a transport Warthog, she and other gathered passing recruits were fed a proper dinner and sent off to bed in coffin-like barracks. Everything that would follow would be to tradition set by Alpha and Beta companies. Despite knowing absolutely nothing about UNSC military culture, she understood that she wasn't the first to go through her experiences at Camp Currahee. As she understood it, if other children before her could manage through whatever pain that was Spartan training, she could to and developed a mantra for it throughout her days on Onyx. She received the usual experiences and traditions that defined the SPARTAN-III program: intensive physical and mental conditioning, mandated education by the Smart AI Deep Winter, advanced guidance led by Beta Company graduates Lucy-B091 and Tom-B292, and the refined hazing culture of SPARTAN-IIIs developed by failed recruits that became drill instructors and those invented by the recruits themselves.

Disaster at Mare Erythraeum

Mare Erythraeum Crash

Team Glaive overlooking a Covenant attack on Mars after their crash landing.

After graduation and augmentations, many in Gamma Company were itching to deploy to the frontlines against the Covenant war machine. The war effort was going poorly in 2552; Onyx was almost in enemy/contested territory. With Colonel James Ackerson away and occupied by the defense of Mars from a Covenant invasion, Lieutenant Commander Ambrose had a difficult time preventing military bureaucrats from ordering him to hand over select Spartan teams for missions.

By late October, the majority of Gamma Company was off Onyx. At this time, Glaive received standby appointment with the Prowler Corps. Upon losing contact with Colonel Ackerson and reports of Covenant forces in the Sol system, Team Glaive received orders to investigate, recover, and return Colonel Ackerson to the ONI stealth cruiser Point of No Return. Of course, the mission turned complicated as they dropped out of Slipspace near Mars a week into November.

The Sol command structure was in disarray, Earth's planetary defenses were in shambles, and Martian orbital infrastructure was scattered. Santos, commander of Team Glaive's Eclipse-class prowler escort UNSC New Moon, ordered his vessel to approach the planet by slipping through a debris field of destroyed shipyards and orbital habitats. The order was sound in theory but after years of hunting UNSC stealth ships, the Covenant developed competency at identifying and destroying prowlers. The extensive debris field above Mars provided concealment from Covenant cruiser fire but limited the New Moon's maneuvering positions as Banshee space interceptors intercepted them.

Glaive managed to drop their D77 Pelican dropship from the New Moon but were shot down as they descended towards the flatlands of Mare Erythraeum. The UNSC New Moon was eventually cornered and destroyed. For the Jiralhanae naval group, Fleet of Furious Redemption, the New Moon's destruction marked their twelfth confirmed prowler kill. Team Glaive's intended landing site was the Martian multiplex space tether, once a bridge to the planet's main orbital infrastructure. Upon learning that Covenant decimated the orbital habitats, they rerouted their plans to Shoreline, headquarters of the Misriah megacorp.

However, with their crash, Glaive was set off-course from Ackerson's last known location. Team Glaive's Pelican crashed far south of Shoreline, almost eighty-five kilometers outside the city of Tricode Village.

The Pelican crew was killed in the crash, their aircraft breaking apart on the descent. Team Glaive barely managed to survive the impact, throwing themselves out the back and relying on a mix of parafoils and booster packs to reach the ground. Still, the Covenant air patrols were not far behind. Stranded and in the open, the team was extended across a debris field extending over two kilometers. Bless-G189 was knocked unconscious during the crash and had to be hastily buried by her comrades in Martian sand as Covenant dropships approached. The rest of the team fanned out into the wilderness, hoping to draw attention away from the crash site as they were pursued by Phantom-borne forces and Banshee aircraft.
