}}April's relationship with her first Headhunter partner, [[Omar-G056]], was not as close as her friendships with the Team Dao members, but the two deeply respected each other and had very good synergy in the field, largely thanks to being very similar in personality; both were straight-to-the-point individuals who favored reliable methods in accomplishing tasks. April possesses a degree of survivor guilt over Omar's death, even though there was little she could have done to prevent it. April also appears to work well with her current partner, [[Leonard Butcher]], but in reality, both possess a mutual dislike for each other. While April does not ever show her distaste for her partner, Butcher often makes it clear that he is annoyed by April's "unnecessarily" strict adhesion to orders.

April-G182 (born April Ortega; April 1, 2537), also known by her codename, Death, is a Headhunter and a SPARTAN-III commando of the Gamma Company. Originally a member of Team Dao, April-G182 joined the Headhunters after proving herself to possess the necessary skills for exceedingly dangerous covert operations. Always completing her missions with ruthless efficiency, April-G182 has gained a reputation as a peerless assassin among the ONI personnel who are aware of her existence.

April-G182, through Operation: SNAKE HEAD, is most notable for preventing the complete devastation of Sydney, Australia, which is the capital of the Unified Earth Government and contains the very headquarters of the United Nations Space Command, HIGHCOM Facility Bravo-6.

    Biography

    Early childhood

April Ortega was born on April 1st, 2537 in New Gettysburg, Actium, and lived with her parents and two older siblings. In May, 2545, when the Covenant attacked the colony, its forces killed April’s entire family. UNSC forces arrived in time to rescue April herself, and she was later given the choice to become a Spartan. Presented with an opportunity to avenge her family, April accepted the proposal without a second thought. She was therefore conscripted into the SPARTAN-III Gamma Company as "April-G182."

April was taken to Onyx, where she was assigned to Team Dao and trained by Lieutenant Commander Kurt Ambrose, Senior Chief Petty Officer Franklin Mendez, and Petty Officers Second Class Lucy-B091 and Tom-B292. With vengeance as her ultimate goal, April worked tirelessly to improve her military skills, and her diligence eventually showed in practice. Despite having been traumatized by the death of her family, April enjoyed the presence of her teammates, even if she did not speak to them much.

Representatives of the Beta-5 Division of the Office of Naval Intelligence were impressed with April-G182's abilities and considered her for induction into the Headhunters. To ensure that April indeed possessed the necessary qualities, ONI put her through exceedingly difficult training exercises. April accomplished all of these challenges without fail, enabling her to become a Headhunter.

Following the augmentation procedures, April-G182 was taken out of Team Dao to be trained on the other side of Onyx. Although she was receiving Headhunter training, her peers were told that her body did not take the enhancements well and she could therefore no longer join them as a fellow Spartan.

    Operation: SNAKE HEAD

    Main article: Operation: SNAKE HEAD

April-G182's superiors partnered her with Omar-G056, a fellow Headhunter, and sent the partnership to Earth. On November 19, 2552, the Headhunters arrived at Sydney, Australia in order to prevent the Covenant from destroying the city, lest the UNSC lose HIGHCOM Facility Bravo-6, their most important structure. ONI had discovered that the local Covenant forces were led by a brute war chieftain named Drusus, but have only been able to devastate the city as a result of the chieftain’s leadership. Killing Drusus would enable the UNSC to drive off the Covenant infantry, thus preventing complete destruction of the capital. ONI was able to locate the building where Drusus was giving his commands from, and sent the two Headhunters to assassinate the chieftain.

April and Omar each brought an SRS99C-S2 AMB and took up separate positions to snipe the Covenant forces that guarded the building. Once both Spartans ran out of 14.5×114mm rounds, they discarded their anti-materiel rifles and proceeded into the structure. The Headhunters made effective use of their active camouflage, maintaining their stealth as they advanced through the building, silently eliminating any Covenant they had to in their path until they found the chieftain himself. Both April and Omar agreed that should one of them be revealed, the other should continue to stick to the shadows and not aid his/her partner in order to complete the mission.

With many of his forces having mysteriously disappeared, Drusus began to suspect that something was wrong and was on full alert. Out of paranoia, he threw a spike grenade, which happened to be in Omar’s direction, forcing the Headhunter to evade and reveal his presence. Drusus’s bodyguards immediately went after Omar, who succeeded in killing most his attackers in self-defense. April, having made the agreement with Omar, used the distracted brutes to get closer to the chieftain. When his bodyguards proved to be unable to take out their enemy, Drusus personally lunged at the Headhunter. Overwhelmed, Omar found himself in the clutches of the chieftain. Before Drusus could land the finishing blow, however, the Headhunter activated a plasma grenade he had collected from a previous fallen foe. The ensuing explosion drained Drusus’ shields and knocked off his helmet while completely vaporizing all other nearby brutes as well as Omar.

Using this opportunity of Drusus' vulnerability, April jumped onto the chieftain’s back, climbed up to his shoulders, and then impaled the top of his skull with her knife. With Drusus dead and the Prophet of Truth at the Ark, the local Covenant forces had lost their cohesion. All remaining UNSC forces in Sydney were then able to finish off the disorganized Covenant, thus saving the capital from destruction.

    April-G182 on Talitsa
Following the Human-Covenant War, April-G182 was among the Spartans selected by ONI’s Delta-6 Division to field test the new Wetwork variant of MJOLNIR GEN2 armor. Delta-6 sent April-G182 and several SPARTAN-IVs to the Outer Colony of Talitsa in order to assassinate some of the leaders of the United Rebel Front. The mission was successful, and the Wetwork armor was approved for continued use.

    Battle of Brasil

In the year 2558, April-G182 was attached to Battle Group Frigg and was stationed aboard the UNSC Ziz.

    Personality and traits

"No, we haven't invented killer robots. Believe it or not, there is actually flesh and bone underneath that shell."
    ―Unnamed ONI officer

Of those who know of April-G182's existence, almost all would regard her as a stone-cold assassin. April-G182 always completes her objectives exactly how they are presented to her and never deviates beyond what she is ordered to do. Because of April-G182's reliability, professionalism, and efficiency, ONI typically tasks her with covertly eliminating important targets, confident that virtually nothing can go wrong; in this regard, she has been compared to SPARTAN-B312. An individual of few words, April-G182 speaks only when absolutely necessary and never leaves any traces of emotion in the way she presents herself. Several have likened speaking with her to speaking with a "Dumb" AI, and April-G182's seemingly complete lack of humanity often leaves an unsettling impression on those who hold no authority over her.

Despite April's reputation as being nothing more than ONI's instrument of death, she, in truth, keeps many feelings to herself that she never confesses to her superiors or coworkers. April most notably holds a deep hatred for the Covenant for murdering her entire family. As a trainee, she used this hatred to fuel her determination in becoming the best warrior she could possibly be, which was what resulted in her induction into the Headhunters.

During April’s time on Onyx before the augmentation procedures, the rest of Team Dao was very friendly towards her. Seung-ah-G218 often approached April for casual conversations, and the constant energy given off by the combination of the three brothers would lighten April’s mood. To this day, April considers Seung-ah and Jim to be the closest friends she has ever had, with both of them having deeply cared for her during their time together. Even though becoming a Headhunter and accomplishing the missions she has are a testament to April’s skills as a result of perseverance, she takes little enjoyment in her present line of work, especially with the Covenant defeated much sooner than she had expected. April often reflects to herself on whether trying so hard was worth her current position, and misses her time spent with the rest of Team Dao, regretting not opening up to them as much as she believes she should have.

    April-G182 and Omar-G056
The synergy between April-G182 and Omar-G056 allowed for the success of Operation: SNAKE HEAD.
April's relationship with her first Headhunter partner, Omar-G056, was not as close as her friendships with the Team Dao members, but the two deeply respected each other and had very good synergy in the field, largely thanks to being very similar in personality; both were straight-to-the-point individuals who favored reliable methods in accomplishing tasks. April possesses a degree of survivor guilt over Omar's death, even though there was little she could have done to prevent it. April also appears to work well with her current partner, Leonard Butcher, but in reality, both possess a mutual dislike for each other. While April does not ever show her distaste for her partner, Butcher often makes it clear that he is annoyed by April's "unnecessarily" strict adhesion to orders.

April-G182 is an incredibly skilled marksman, with very few who exceed her in that field. However, applying herself intensely in any form of training has made her a very proficient fighter in every way. Although Henry-G066 is potentially more skilled than April in some areas of combat, Jim-G067 is outright better than her at hand-to-hand, and all three brothers each possesses greater physical strength than she does, one important trait April has over them, besides her marksmanship, is her ability to resists the side-effects of the 009762-OO drug injected into all SPARTAN-IIIs of the Gamma Company better than her peers can, allowing her to remain calm during stressful situations. The combination of her aforementioned capabilities as well as her unwavering determination is what earned her integration into the Headhunters.

    Equipment

    April-G182 SPI

As a Headhunter in the Human-Covenant War, April-G182 wore the experimental variant of SPI armor given to all Headhunters of the time; this variant of SPI armor was equipped with a motion tracker, energy shielding, a VISR, and active camouflage that could be sustained for up to four minutes and required power from other systems of the suit to recharge. April-G182's specific SPI suit superficially resembled the Scanner variant of the second generation of MJOLNIR armor, possessing a vision-enhancing module that could be slid up to the helmet's parietal plate when not in use.

Following the war, ONI’s Delta-6 Division assigned April as one of the several Spartans to field test the MJOLNIR Wetwork armor against lingering rebels on Talitsa. By 2558, April was given the option to select components for a personally-tailored suit of armor, and she chose to wear Copperhead armor and a Vigilant helmet with a Tenebrae VISR. April's helmet not only aids her stealth and marksmanship capabilities but also possesses a built-in laser designator that allows her to direct nuclear missiles launched from orbit or an on-planet missile silo. April's new armor is also fitted with an active camouflage system upgraded from the existing Type-3 Refraction Dissonance Modifier module.

April-G182, in her custom MJOLNIR GEN2 armor and wielding an SRS99-S5 AM Arrow of Time and an ARC-920 Whiplash

April-G182 has a preference for the BR series battle rifles due to the stopping power the 9.5×40mm cartridge provides over that of the 7.62×51mm, and because of her marksmanship, she is often deployed with an anti-materiel rifle. As of 2558, April most frequently goes into the field with a BR85N fitted with a COG sight and suppressor as her primary weapon, an SRS99-S5 AM Arrow of Time or an ARC-920 Whiplash as her support weapon, and an M6D/SOCOM as her sidearm.

    Trivia

    • April-G182's relationship with Leonard Butcher is loosely inspired by that of Locus and Felix from the Red vs. Blue web series, with April herself showing traits more similar to those of the former. Ironically, April wears the Mk V Scout-inspired Vigilant helmet, and Felix wears a Scout helmet, while Butcher and Locus each wear helmets aesthetically designed for intimidation.
    • April-G182 shares the same numerals in her tag as her former teammate Seung-ah-G218. This is entirely coincidental, as Hyper Zergling came up with the number 182 completely out of random and was not thinking of Seung-ah-G218's tag during his creation of April-G182.
