The 9.5×40mmSR (sometimes called 9.5×40mm KURZ) is a semi-rimmed, bottlenecked full-powered rifle cartridge designed by Misriah Armory for use in the BR series of battle rifles.

Military cartridge types[]

Ammo -BR
M634 HP-SAP
  • Cartridge, caliber 9.5mm, stun, M505: 2.6 g (40-grain) stun round, consisting of a less-lethal rubber projectile. The M505 is subsonic and is used specifically for combat simulation training. Due to the M505's substantially lesser energy than non-training ammunition, a special training bolt must be used in the rifle to allow for proper cycling.
  • Cartridge, caliber 9.5mm, tactical training, M507: 2.2 g (34-grain) tactical training round, consisting of a polymer shell holding a powerful liquid anesthetic that also has the ability to immobilize the nano-fibers woven into military training clothes, causing them to harden. Like the M505, the M507 is subsonic and is used specifically for combat simulation training. Due to the M507's substantially lesser energy than non-training ammunition, a special training bolt must be used in the rifle to allow for proper cycling.
  • Cartridge, caliber 9.5mm, high-powered semi-armor-piercing, M634: 14.6 g (225-grain) high-powered semi-armor-piercing round, consisting of a steel penetrator tip, a copper-alloy core, a tracer compound at the base and a copper full metal jacket. Although the M634 is lighter than the 7.62×51mm M118 used by the MA5s in terms of bullet weight, the 9.5×40mmSR cartridge is loaded with a more-efficient propellant that provides it with a significantly higher muzzle velocity and energy yield. When tested from a distance of 750 meters (820 yards), the M634 penetrated, on-average, 30 cm (12 inches) into 10% ballistic gelatin after passing through 63 mm (2.5 in) of titanium alloy (bullets that penetrate at least 30 cm into 10% ballistic gel are considered to be able to reliably produce incapacitating wounds when hitting the chest area on a human target).
  • Cartridge, caliber 9.5mm, frangible, M764: 10.8 g (166-grain) frangible round, upon striking a hard surface, disintegrates. The M764 is used specifically for shooting metal targets at firing ranges to minimize the potential for ricochet-induced collateral damage.
  • Cartridge, caliber 9.5mm, kinetic bolt, XM985: Kinetic bolt, consisting of a hardlight projectile that detonates microseconds after entering a target. The XM985 possesses anti-materiel capabilities and ionizes organic tissue. Due to the cost of manufacturing XM985 ammunition, this particular cartridge is used almost exclusively by Spartans for high-risk missions.
