The 7.62×51mm is a rimless, bottlenecked intermediate cartridge developed from the extremely-similar 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge of the 20th century.

History

Military cartridge types

MA5B AR ammo
M118 FMJ-AP
  • Cartridge, caliber 7.62 mm, Full Metal Jacket Armor-Piercing, M118: 23 g (355-grain) armor-piercing bullet, consisting of a tungsten alloy core, a copper alloy full metal jacket and a tracer element. The M118 was tested on 10% ballistic gelatin behind layers of various titanium alloys from both an MA37 and an M392. When fired from an MA37, the M118 could not penetrate 49 mm (1.9 in) of titanium alloy, even as close as 5 meters. At a distance of 300 meters (328 yards), the M118 out of an MA37 on-average penetrated 41 cm (16 in) into the ballistics gel after passing through 19 mm (0.75 in) of titanium nanocomposite. When fired from an M395 at a distance of 750 meters (820 yards), the M118 on-average penetrated 36 cm (14 in) into the ballistics gel after passing through 49 mm of titanium alloy.
  • Cartridge, caliber 7.62 mm, Tactical Training, M125: 1.4 g (22-grain) tactical training round, consisting of a polymer shell holding a powerful liquid anesthetic that also has the ability to immobilize the nano-fibers woven into military training clothes, causing them to harden. The M125 is subsonic and is used specifically for combat simulation training. Due to the M125's substantially lesser energy than non-training ammunition, a special training bolt must be used in the rifle to allow for proper cycling.

  • Cartridge, caliber 7.62 mm, Saboted Light Armor Penetrator Tracer, M258: Saboted light armor penetrator cartridge, consisting of a 3.4 g (53-grain) depleted uranium penetrator encased in a polymer sabot to allow for a light, thin bullet to travel at extremely high velocities for increased armor-piercing capabilities and higher energy yields. The M258 also possesses a tracer element and was designed specifically for use in AIE-486H machine guns. In testing, it penetrated on-average 33 cm (13 in) into ballistics gel after passing through 49 mm of titanium alloy from a distance of 240 meters.
  • Cartridge, caliber 7.62 mm, Shredder, M355: 9.5 g (147-grain) shredder round, consisting of a conventional lead core and a copper full metal jacket, but structured to fragment shortly after impact. The M355 is designed to be used on unarmored targets and is not effective against enemies with adequate levels of protection.
  • Cartridge, caliber 7.62 mm, Hollow-Point, M424: 11.3 g (175-grain) hollow-point bullet, consisting of a conventional lead core and a copper jacket. Magazines containing this ammunition are labeled with red paint. The M424 is designed to be used on unarmored targets and is not effective against enemies with adequate levels of protection.
  • Cartridge, caliber 7.62 mm, Kinetic Bolt, XM535: Massless kinetic bolt, composed entirely of hardlight that detonates microseconds after entering a target. The XM535 possesses anti-materiel capabilities and atomizes organic tissue. Due to the cost of manufacturing XM535 ammunition, this particular cartridge is used almost exclusively by Spartans for high-risk missions.
  • Cartridge, caliber 7.62 mm, High-Explosive Dual-Purpose Tracer, M664: High-explosive dual-purpose projectile, consisting of a shaped charge, a steel jacket and a tracer element; on impact, the round's fuze detonates the explosive charge that blasts the steel jacket into the target in fragments. The M664 was designed specifically for the AV-49ONI Wasp's machine guns and in testing, more than 50% of the projectile's mass penetrated on-average 33 cm (13 in) into ballistics gel after passing through 49 mm of titanium alloy from a distance of 300 meters.
  • Cartridge, caliber 7.62 mm, Armor-Piercing High-Explosive Tracer, M939: Armor-piercing high-explosive projectile, consisting of a tungsten alloy body with a hollow cavity at the base filled with an explosive compound and a tracer element. The Answer M939 was designed specifically for M739 light machine guns and was tested to be able to penetrate on-average 30 cm (12 in) into 10% ballistics gel before detonating after passing through 49 mm of titanium alloy from a distance of 300 meters.
